4. MEASUREMENT AND TIME (LO 1, 2, 4 AND 5<br />

LEARNING UNIT 1 FOCUSES ON LENGTH.<br />

Emphasise the use of correct abbreviations. Also spend adequate time on explaining<br />

how to convert correctly from one unit to another, as learners usually find this quite<br />

complicated. Be convinced that the learners understand the different formulas for<br />

calculating perimeter and are able to apply them correctly so that they will not be<br />

confused when they start to work with area. Also pay attention to the calculation of<br />

averages as this has not been dealt with before.<br />

LEARNING UNIT 2 FOCUSES ON AREA.<br />

Ensure that the learners understand the difference between area and perimeter. Also<br />

ensure that they know the correct formulas and are able to apply them. The calculation<br />

of area of irregular figures is also dealt with. Allow extra time for this, if necessary, so<br />

that learners will be able to do the calculations.<br />

LEARNING UNIT 3 FOCUSES ON MASS.<br />

Learners must be able to read measuring scales / a balance. The emphasis, however,<br />

is on the correct application of the 4 main operations in calculating mass.<br />

LEARNING UNIT 4 FOCUSES ON CAPACITY.<br />

Here learners should be able to do the conversions correctly. They should also be able<br />

to read capacity correctly from a measuring cup. As in the previous learning unit, the<br />

emphasis is on accurately solving problems in context.<br />

LEARNING UNIT 5 FOCUSES ON VOLUME.<br />

It is important for the learners to know the formula and to apply it correctly.<br />

LEARNING UNIT 6 FOCUSES ON TIME.<br />

Ensure that the learners learn the correct abbreviations.<br />

Also point out the correct way of writing time as shown on a digital clock (international<br />

time). Learners must be taught to add and subtract time correctly. Adequate attention<br />

should therefore be given to correct conversion of units of time.
