The Gathering: STAND
Entrance Hymn NEH 439
Praise to the Holiest in the height,
And in the depth be praise,
In all his words most wonderful,
Most sure in all his ways.
O loving wisdom of our God!
When all was sin and shame,
A second Adam to the fight
And to the rescue came.
O wisest love! that flesh and blood,
Which did in Adam fail,
Should strive afresh against their foe,
Should strive and should prevail;
And that a higher gift than grace
Should flesh and blood refine,
God’s presence and his very self,
And essence all-divine.
O generous love! that he who smote
In Man for man the foe,
The double agony in Man
For man should undergo;
And in the garden secretly,
And on the cross on high,
Should teach his brethren, and inspire
To suffer and to die.
Praise to the Holiest in the height,
And in the depth be praise,
In all his words most wonderful,
Most sure in all his ways.
Prayers of Penitence
Remain standing
Because God was merciful, he saved us through the water of rebirth
and the renewing power of the Holy Spirit.
Through sin we have fallen away from our baptism.
Let us return to the Lord and renew our faith in his promises,
acknowledging our sins in penitence.
You raise the dead to life in the Spirit:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
You bring pardon and peace to the sinner:
Christ have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
You bring light to those in darkness:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,
we worship you,
we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
6
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest.
The Collect is sung
Almighty God,
who called your Church to bear witness
that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself:
help us to proclaim the good news of your love,
that all who hear it may be drawn to you;
through him who was lifted up on the cross,
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
The Liturgy of the Word SIT
First reading: Jonah 3.10 – 4.11
A reading from the Book of Jonah
When God saw what the people of Nineveh did, how they turned from
their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had
said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. But this was very
displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry. He prayed to the LORD
and said,
‘O LORD!
Is not this what I said while I was still in my own country?
That is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning;
for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love,
and ready to relent from punishing.
And now, O LORD,
7
please take my life from me,
for it is better for me to die than to live.’
And the LORD said,
‘Is it right for you to be angry?’
Then Jonah went out of the city and sat down east of the city, and
made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, waiting to
see what would become of the city.
The LORD God appointed a bush, and made it come up over Jonah, to
give shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort; so Jonah
was very happy about the bush. But when dawn came up the next day,
God appointed a worm that attacked the bush, so that it withered.
When the sun rose, God prepared a sultry east wind, and the sun beat
down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint and asked that he
might die.
He said, ‘It is better for me to die than to live.’
But God said to Jonah,
‘Is it right for you to be angry about the bush?’
And he said, ‘Yes, angry enough to die.’
Then the LORD said,
‘You are concerned about the bush, for which you did not labour and
which you did not grow; it came into being in a night and perished in
a night. And should I not be concerned about Nineveh, that great city,
in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people
who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many
animals?’
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Psalm 145 1‐8
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.
You have the words of eternal life
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Gospel: Matthew 20.1-16
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus said to his disciples:
‘The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the
morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the
labourers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard.
When he went out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in
the market-place; and he said to them, “You also go into the vineyard,
and I will pay you whatever is right.” So they went.
When he went out again about noon and about three o'clock, he did the
same. And about five o'clock he went out and found others standing
around; and he said to them, “Why are you standing here idle all day?”
They said to him, “Because no one has hired us.” He said to them,
“You also go into the vineyard.”
When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager,
“Call the labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last
and then going to the first.”
When those hired about five o'clock came, each of them received the
usual daily wage.
Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but
each of them also received the usual daily wage.
And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner,
saying,
“These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to
us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.”
But he replied to one of them,
“Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the
usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give
to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I
choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am
generous?”
So the last will be first, and the first will be last.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Faith is the gift of God to his people.
In baptism the Lord is adding to our number
those whom he is calling.
People of God, will you welcome Ellie Grace
and uphold her in her new life in Christ?
With the help of God, we will.
The priest then says to the parents and godparents
Parents and godparents,
the Church receives Ellie with joy.
Today we are trusting God for her growth in faith.
Will you pray for her,
draw her by your example into the community of faith
and walk with her in the way of Christ?
With the help of God, we will.
In baptism Ellie begins her journey in faith.
You speak for her today.
Will you care for her,
and help her to take her place
within the life and worship of Christ’s Church?
With the help of God, we will.
10
The Decision
In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light.
To follow Christ means dying to sin
and rising to new life with him.
Therefore I ask:
Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?
I reject them.
Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil?
I renounce them.
Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour?
I repent of them.
Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?
I turn to Christ.
Do you submit to Christ as Lord?
I submit to Christ.
Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life?
I come to Christ.
Signing with the Cross
The priest makes the sign of the cross on the child, saying
Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross.
Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified.
Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ
against sin, the world and the devil,
and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.
May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness,
restore in you the image of his glory,
and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ.
Amen.
Anointing before Baptism
We anoint you with the oil of salvation
in the name of Christ our Saviour;
may he strengthen you with his power,
who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Amen.
11
The priest and family gather at the baptismal font, while the first part of the
Litany of Thanksgiving for the Resurrection is sung. Please stand and turn to
face the font as the procession passes.
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is gracious:
and his mercy endures for ever.
He has loved us from all eternity:
for his mercy endures for ever.
And remembered us when we were in trouble:
for his mercy endures for ever.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
for his mercy endures for ever.
He became incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and was made man:
for his mercy endures for ever.
By his cross and passion he has redeemed the world:
for his mercy endures for ever.
And has washed us from our sins in his own blood:
for his mercy endures for ever.
On the third day he rose again:
for his mercy endures for ever.
And has given us the victory:
for his mercy endures for ever.
He ascended into heaven:
for his mercy endures for ever.
And opened wide for us the everlasting doors:
for his mercy endures for ever.
He is seated at the right hand of the Father:
for his mercy endures for ever.
And ever lives to make intercession for us:
for his mercy endures for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without
end. Amen.
12
Prayer over the Water
The priest stands before the water of baptism and says
Praise God who made heaven and earth,
who keeps his promise for ever.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
We thank you, almighty God, for the gift of water
to sustain, refresh and cleanse all life.
We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism.
In it we are buried with Christ in his death.
By it we share in his resurrection.
Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, in joyful obedience to your Son,
we baptize into his fellowship those who come to him in faith.
You have called your child Ellie
to this cleansing water and new birth,
that by sharing the faith of your church
she may have eternal life.
By the mystery of this consecrated water
lead her to a new an spiritual birth
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Profession of Faith
The priest addresses the congregation
Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess
together with Ellie
the faith of the Church.
Do you believe and trust in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
13
Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ?
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.
Baptism
Ellie Grace, I baptize you
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Anointing after Baptism
The priest anoints the candidate[s] with the oil of Chrism (blessed by the Bishop
at Easter) as a sign of being joined to Christ, saying
The God of power and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
has freed you from sin and brought you to new life
through water and the Holy Spirit.
He now anoints you with the chrism of salvation,
so that, united with his people,
you may remain for ever a member of Christ
who is Priest, Prophet and King.
Amen.
14
Giving of a Lighted Candle
The priest gives a candle lit from the Paschal Candle to one of the Godparents.
God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness
and has given us a place with the saints in light.
You have received the light of Christ;
walk in this light all the days of your life.
Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father.
The priest and those who have been baptized return from the font as the second
part of the Litany of Thanksgiving for the Resurrection is sung:
For the gift of the Spirit: blessed be Christ.
For the catholic Church: blessed be Christ.
For the means of grace: blessed be Christ.
For the hope of glory: blessed be Christ.
For the triumphs of his gospel: blessed be Christ.
For the lives of his saints: blessed be Christ.
In joy and in sorrow: blessed be Christ.
In life and in death: blessed be Christ.
Now and to the end of the ages: blessed be Christ.
The Welcome and Peace
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism:
Ellie, by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body.
We welcome you into the fellowship of faith;
we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you.
The congregation may greet the newly baptized.
The Liturgy of the Sacrament
The Peace
May the God of peace sanctify you:
may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness
that you may be blameless before him
at the coming of our Lord Jesus with his saints.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
15
Offertory Hymn: NEH 296
Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour,
First-begotten from the dead,
Thou alone, our strong defender,
Liftest up thy people’s head.
Alleluya,
Jesu, true and living Bread!
Here our humblest homage pay we;
Here in loving reverence bow;
Here for Faith’s discernment pray we,
Lest we fail to know thee now.
Alleluya,
Thou art here, we ask not how.
Though the lowliest form doth veil thee
As of old in Bethlehem,
Here as there thine angels hail thee,
Branch and Flower of Jesse’s stem.
Alleluya,
We in worship join with them.
Paschal Lamb, thine Offering, finished
Once for all when thou wast slain,
In its fullness undiminished
Shall for evermore remain,
Alleluya,
Cleansing souls from every stain.
Life-imparting heavenly Manna,
Stricken Rock with streaming side,
Heaven and earth with loud hosanna
Worship thee, the Lamb who died,
Alleluya,
Risen, ascended, glorified!
16
Offertory Prayer:
Lord, receive these gifts from your Church.
May the great joy you give us come to perfection in heaven.
We make our prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen
The Eucharistic Prayer
REMAIN STANDING
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
And now we give you thanks
because by water and the Holy Spirit
you have made us in him a new people
to show forth your glory.
Therefore with angels and archangels and
with all the company of heaven
we proclaim your great and glorious name
for ever praising you and singing:
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
17
We praise and bless you, loving Father,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord;
and as we obey his command,
send your Holy Spirit,
that broken bread and wine outpoured
may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.
KNEEL
On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and,
taking bread, he praised you.
He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.
Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it,
In remembrance of me.
So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did,
in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice
made once for all upon the cross.
Offering to you
the bread of life and cup of salvation,
we proclaim his death and resurrection
until he comes in glory.
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died
Christ is risen
Christ will come again.
18
Lord of all life,
help us to work together for that day
when your kingdom comes
and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth.
Remember, Lord, your Church in every land.
Reveal her unity, guard her faith,
and preserve her in peace;
make us grow in love,
together with Alan our bishop
and all your people.
Remember Ellie,
baptized into membership of your holy church today.
Inspire her to hear and follow your gospel,
and give witness to you by her life.
Remember all those in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness
or any other adversity,
especially those for whom we now pray…
Remember our brothers and sisters
who have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again;
[Especially...]
bring them and all the departed
into the light of your presence.
Look with favour on all your people,
gather us in your loving arms
and bring us with Our Lady Mary,
St Peter and all the saints
to feast at your table in heaven;
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
19
The Lord’s Prayer
Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us
Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed
are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.
The priest and people receive communion. All baptized Christians who receive communion
in their own church are welcome to receive communion.
If you do not receive communion, please come to the altar rail for a blessing.
Prayer after Communion:
During Communion the choir will sing a motet
God our creator,
you feed your children with the true manna,
the living bread from heaven:
let this holy food sustain us through our earthly pilgrimage
until we come to that place
where hunger and thirst are no more;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Faithful God,
in baptism you have adopted us as your children,
made us members of the body of Christ
and chosen us as inheritors of your kingdom:
we thank you that in this Eucharist
you renew your promises within us.
Empower us by your Spirit to witness and to serve,
and send us out as disciples of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Banns of Marriage and Notices
The Blessing and Dismissal
The God of all grace,
who called you to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus,
establish, strengthen and settle you in the faith;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.
Amen.
Go in the peace of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
Final Hymn NEH 361
Forth in the peace of Christ we go;
Christ to the world with joy we bring;
Christ in our minds, Christ on our lips,
Christ in our hearts, the world’s true King.
King of our hearts, Christ makes us kings;
Kingship with him his servants gain;
With Christ, the Servant-Lord of all,
Christ’s world we serve to share Christ’s reign.
Priests of the world, Christ sends us forth
This world of time to consecrate,
This world of sin by grace to heal,
Christ’s world in Christ to re-create.
Christ’s are our lips, his word we speak;
Prophets are we whose deeds proclaim
Christ’s truth in love, that we may be
Christ in the world, to spread Christ’s name.
We are the Church; Christ bids us show
That in his Church all nations find
Their hearth and home, where Christ restores
True peace, true love, to all mankind.
