Magda Szabó est née en 1917 en Hongrie.
Ses premiers écrits sont publiés au lendemain
de la Seconde Guerre mondiale mais,
après 1948, pour des raisons politiques,
elle disparaît de la scène littéraire.
Lorsque ses livres ressortent en librairie à
la fin des années 50, l’accueil est enthousiaste.
Depuis, récompenses et traductions
à l’étranger se succèdent.
Magda Szabó est devenue une figure
The Door
majeure des lettres hongroises.
La Porte paraît en 1987. Le succès est
international, en 1992 le livre obtient le
Prix Betz Corporation aux États-Unis.
Bizarrement, la France ignorait ce chefd’œuvre.
Les éditions Viviane Hamy s’attachent
désormais à faire découvrir cet écrivain.
