Preventing Cancer in Men and Women: Current Advances, Disparities, Debates and Examples from HPV
Related Cancers
e psychosocial dimensions of screening and vaccination are key to preventing several types of cancers among
men and women. Cervical cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in women worldwide, with particularly
high rates in countries with limited resources. More recently, the virus which causes cervical cancer in women
(HPV) has also been implicated in neck and throat cancers in young men. e introduction of the HPV vaccine
has changed the scene of cancer prevention for men and women and has ignited optimis …m for the elimination
of the disease, as well as diverse and animated debates. Attitudes and meanings of new approaches to prevention
are contextual and shaped by conceptualizations of trust, responsibility, control, and gender. In this talk I will
discuss barriers and disparities, the contextual aspects of attitudes and behaviors of prevention, and implications
for further prevention. I will illustrate with international work, particularly with our work in Eastern Europe on
screening and HPV vaccine implementation.
Psychosocial Determinants of Smoking in Latin American Youth
Cigarette smoking continues to be an important health problem among adolescents in Latin America. Although
studies have helped to understand the determinants of cigarette use among adolescents, fewer studies have been
conducted in Latin America, and we know less why youth from these geographical area start and continue to
smoke. is presentation will focus on the psychosocial determinants of cigarette use among adolescents in Latin
America. e similarities and dierences will be emphasized regarding patterns of use. Gender dierences will
also be raised and need to further understand cultural issues around the use of cigarettes.
Control of Cortical Inhibition and Excitation by Endocannabinoids: Novel Insights into Anxiety and Epilepsy
Endogenous cannabinoids are thought to be retrograde mediators in several forms of synaptic plasticity.
Depolarization of cortical pyramidal cells, or a rise in intracellular calcium, evokes a CB1 cannabinoid receptormediated
short-term depression of GABA and/or glutamate release from aerent axon terminals. e lecture will
describe how the endocannabinoid system is organized into signaling complexes that serve as circuit breakers
in neuronal networks, or as feed-back regulators of synaptic transmission. Evidence will be presented that
malfunctioning of this control machinery is implicated in anxiety and epilepsy, which point to new drug targets
in pharmacotherapy.
