Academic background: 1984 – 1988 Bachelor in Geology; 1988-1990 military service;
1995 – Internal Geodynamics Geology master degree; 2005 – PhD in Structural Geology
applied to Dimension Stones exploration and exploitation.
Teaching activities at University of Évora from 1990 to present: Field Geology, Structural Geology,
Geodynamics, Geological Mapping, General Geology, Mining and Exploration Geology, Thematic Cartography,
Mineral Resources, Mineral Exploitation Resources, Dimension and Industrial Stones and Geology of Portugal.
Since his PhD, Luís Lopes has been specialized on dimension stones studies, from exploration, exploitation,
physical properties, use and application of these materials with special care to the Paleozoic marbles from the
Estremoz – Borba – Vila Viçosa anticline in south – central Portugal. Present areas of interest are Dimension
Stones, Structural Geology, Archeometry, Geological Heritage and Scientific Promotion on Geology.
Nowadays has five fund projects regarding these subjects and more than one hundred publications from
technical reports to papers in peer review publications.
