WELCOME
Discovery is proud to once again partner in the Discovery World Triathlon Cape
Town. This year will also see some participants wearing Team Vitality colours
– our movement to get more people active and to grow sports participation.
Sport, in all its forms, is a powerful way for people to challenge themselves and
to experience the many benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle. As anyone who has
participated in a triathlon will know, this sport is not for the faint-hearted. You
have to call on great physical and mental strength to succeed. It’s a sport that
also demands improvements to your overall lifestyle to perform at your best.
Last year, our oldest participant was 80 years old and it was his first triathlon,
while the youngest participants were only 11. This is exactly what makes the
Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town such an exciting event to Discovery and
personally why a few of us have felt compelled to “tri”. Congratulations to every
participant for completing the tough preparation phase, and best of luck in this
year’s Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town. We are literally with you all the way.
WETSUITS
Wetsuits are needed for this event. There is a very strong possibility that
wetsuits will be compulsory for this event, in accordance with the ITU
competition rules governing wetsuit use and water temperature.
Wetsuits must be worn if water temperature is below 14 degrees and wetsuits
are forbidden if water temperature is above 22 degrees. Normally the water
temperature is well below 14 degrees at this time of the year.
Besides keeping you warm during the swim, wetsuits also assist with buoyancy and
help you swim faster. However, you do not need to purchase one, as wetsuits will be
available for rent for this event. Visit capetown.triathlon.org for more information.
To avoid mix-ups in Transition, we recommend you put your name in your wetsuit!
Your timing chip needs to be placed under your wetsuit on your left leg.
This is to make sure that when you remove your wetsuit the timing chip doesn’t
come off at the same time.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR RELAY TEAMS
This information only applies to athletes racing in a relay team.
There is an allocated hand over zone in Transition for teams.
You need to hand over your timing chip and attach it to your
teammate’s ankle before they are allowed to start their leg.
Every team member needs to come to Registration to sign
the indemnity form and receive a wristband.
In your race pack you will find one swim cap, three race numbers
and several numbered stickers. The swim cap is to be worn
by the swimmer. One race number is to be worn on the back
of the cyclist and the other on the front of the runner.
The remaining stickers are for the bike and helmet.
The bike stickers must be placed on the bike (the long sticker
around the seat post) and the front of the helmet before these
are taken into Transition 1.
All team members must be fitted with a wristband at race
registration. All relay team members will be allowed access
to Transition 1 & 2. However, to avoid congestion in Transition
during the race, while the swimmer is swimming, only the cyclist
should be in Transition 1 ready for the changeover, at the
allocated hand over zone. Only the runner waits in Transition 2
for the cyclist to return. There should never be three relay team
members in Transition at the same time during the race.
Be aware that Transition 1 & 2 are quite far apart.
Please plan accordingly.
SWIMMER
Wear the timing chip around your ankle.
After your swim, run into Transition 1. At the allocated hand
over zone, the timing chip must be placed around the left ankle
of the cyclist.
CYCLIST
Wear your helmet with the helmet strap fastened and one race
number, on your back. Wait for your swimmer at the allocated
hand over zone. Don’t remove your bike from the rack until your
swimmer has tagged you and the timing chip has been placed
around your LEFT ankle. After the cycle, you must rack your bike
in the allocated position. After you have racked the bike,
the timing chip will be removed from your ankle and placed
around the runner’s ankle.
RUNNER
Wear one of the race numbers on your front.
Wait for your cyclist at the allocated hand over zone in
Transition 2. After the bike has been racked, the timing chip
will be removed from the cyclist’s ankle and placed around your
ankle (either one) you can then proceed on your run.
Make sure your race number is visible on your front during
the run and as you cross the finish line.
All relay team members will be allowed to access
Transition 1 & 2. But remember, there should never be three
relay team members in Transition at the same time during
the race.

FINISH
POST RACE
You will receive your medal at the finish. After receiving the medal
please leave the finish area immediately to avoid blocking the
following athletes. Please make your way towards the athletes’
recovery area.
Immediately after the race, you will receive your medal and refreshments
in the recovery area.
TIMING CHIP RETURN
Make sure that the timing chip is handed in at the finish area
after the race. Failure to return your chip will result in a fee being
charged.
FINISHING TOGETHER
Athletes can finish together. There is a designated relay team
meeting point at the beginning of the finish chute.
When your runner comes into the finish chute, you will be granted
access to the finish chute in order to finish together as a team.
MEDALS
If you have not finished together, the relay team runner should
collect three medals for the team.
Timing chips must be handed in at the finish area after the race.
Failure to return your chip will result in a fee being charged.
BIKE CHECK-OUT
You must present your wristband at check-out. You will not be allowed
to check their bikes out unless their bike number matches their wrist band number.
So do not tear off the bike number from your bike or wrist band in the Transition
area before check-out!
