Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, IMERYS
Biography: Appointed as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer on
April 28, 2011. Joined Imerys in September 2010 after holding the
position of Chief Executive Officer of the French Strategic Investment
Fund since the 1st December 2008. He had previously held managerial
positions within PSA Peugeot-Citroën and Saint-Gobain groups
and in the World Bank.

General Manager Primary Manufacturing, ArcelorMittal Dofasco
Title: How Do Steelmakers Pick Refractories – Logic, Emotion or
Dartboard?
Biography: Tom Vert is the General Manager of Primary Manufacturing
at ArcelorMittal Dofasco which includes Cokemaking, Ironmaking,
Steelmaking, and Material Handling & Logistics, and has held
this position since 2010. He graduated from McMaster University
in 1987 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Ceramic) and received his MBA in 1994 also
from McMaster University. Vert joined ArcelorMittal Dofasco in 1989 and has moved
through a number of positions in Steelmaking in both Technology and Operations. He
has been chairperson for the Refractory division of both the Canadian and American
Ceramic Societies. Vert has served as chairperson of the UNITECR Refractory International
Executive Board and is also a distinguished life member of this group.

The program calls for approximately 200 presentations, with a final selection of
qualified presentations by the Technical Program Committee to be made on the
basis of technical content, as well as the date and order in which the abstracts
are received. Oral presentations will be 20 minutes, including 15 minutes for
presentations and 5 minutes for discussion. Applicants will receive e-mail
notification of acceptance by December 31, 2012.
Authors of accepted abstracts are required to submit a paper (8 pages or less)
for the meeting proceedings. The proceedings is to be published on a USB Drive
and made available at the time of the meeting. Some authors may require their
paper to be peer reviewed (refereed) and organizers have made this option
available. The deadline for submitting your paper for peer review is
April 10, 2013. The deadline for all other papers is June 12, 2013. Additional
information on the proceedings and manuscript submission process, including
Author Guidelines, will be sent to authors after the abstract acceptance process
is completed.
The official language of UNITECR 2013 is English.

About UNITECR
Organized by The North American Members of the UNITECR International
Executive Board under the auspicious of the UNITECR International Executive
Board, hosted by The American Ceramic Society.
UNITECR is a biennial international conference that is conducted by one of
its four “Founding Member Organizations” in odd-number years. The official
oversight body is the UNITECR International Executive Board (IEB), composed
of representatives of the founding member organizations and certain individuals,
who are elected to the IEB as Distinguished Life Members. IEB is governed
under bylaws established by its members. The objective of the UNITECR IEB is
to organize the biennial UNITECR and any other meetings with a view to maintain
and develop its activities and generally to contribute to the progress and
exchange of industrial knowledge and technologies concerning refractories.

Courses
Dispersion and Packing of Ceramics Particles for Advanced Refractory Castables
Instructors: Ana Paula Luz, Mariana A. Braulio and Victor C. Pandolfelli from
Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil
Description: The main objective of the course is to provide the fundamentals in order to
help processing and microstructure design of refractory castables.
Topics: Morning – Rheological concepts, viscosity and shear effects, double layer and
DLVO fundamentals, zeta potential, electrostatic and electrosteric dispersion, dispersant
role, structure and selection, multi-component dispersion, stability maps, dispersing complex
systems: Al 2
O 3
-SiC-C-SiO 2
and wet shotcrete concept application.
Afternoon – The fundamentals and main particle packing models used in the design of
castable compositions, as well as the aspects that affect packing density will be discussed.
Moreover, the role of a suitable particle size distribution in castables processing (mixing and
drying), rheology, thermo-mechanical properties and application technique (vibratable and
self-flow castables) will be highlighted in order to provide some insights for the development
of advanced refractories.
Audience: Engineers, scientists, students, technicians and managers who are interested in
understanding the fundamentals and how they can be applied to processing and designing
ceramic microstructures.
Fundamentals on Corrosion Behaviour of Refractories
Instructors: Christos Aneziris, Technical University Freiberg, Germany, Jacques
Poirier, University of Orleans, France
Description: One main focus is the iron and steel industry, but other high temperature
processes are discussed.
Topics: Morning – Fundamental mechanisms of corrosion and the solutions to limit the
thermochemical degradations, Wetting, infiltration, Corrosion by liquid species (metal, slag,
molten salts), Corrosion by gaseous species (oxygen, alkalis, chlorides, sulfur compounds).
Afternoon – Impact of refractories corrosion on industrial processes, including steel making,
cement industry, waste incineration and energy.
Audience: Engineers, scientists, students (Masters or PhD), technicians and managers
who are interested in the refractory manufacturing or refractory consuming industry are
encouraged to attend.
Student Funding
The North American Members of the UNITECR
will award approximately 10 - 20 scholarships
based on academic merit and/or the applicant’s
demonstrated experience or interest in the field of
refractories. Funding levels will be commensurate
based on whether the student is an attendee
versus a presenter of an accepted technical paper.

Application Requirements
Scholarships are available to college undergraduate
or graduate students studying in a North
American institution who will be enrolled full
time in the 2013-14 academic year in pursuit of a
degree in ceramic engineering, materials engineering,
metallurgical engineering, mechanical
engineering or similarly related disciplines.
Funding will be awarded upon submission of appropriate
original expense receipts for the conference,
which may include:
a) Air fare at the economy rate or auto travel and
gas.
b) Double occupancy of hotel room (if unshared
occupancy please submit explanation for
consideration).
c) Food (The conference will include most meals.)
d) Conference fees
e) Ground transportation to and from the airport
