Introduction
This document summarizes the webinar held on November 16, 2009 by the Trucking Industry
Mobility and Technology Coalition (TIMTC). The TIMTC webinar provided participants with: a
summary of the TIMTC annual meeting held on October 6-7, 2009; an update on the TIMTC
technology compendium; and a chance to lend direction to TIMTC’s future efforts. The
Opening Remarks
TIMTC staff welcomed participants to the first TIMTC webinar, and gave a brief introduction
outlining the agenda and purpose of the webinar. The success of the inaugural TIMTC annual
meeting was recounted and the high-level interest the meeting generated was discussed.
Participants were invited to review a summary of the annual meeting which had recently been
added to the TIMTC website.
For participants new to the TIMTC initiative, an introduction to the program was given. TIMTC
staff noted that the TIMTC is an innovative program for developing a sustainable public-private
partnership of trucking-related transportation stakeholders. To that end, three main tasks
comprise the TIMTC effort: TIMTC outreach, including newsletters, webinars, and the TIMTC
website; the TIMTC technology compendium, and the TIMTC annual meeting. The TIMTC is
jointly
managed by U.S. DOT, ATRI, ATA, CVSA, and AASHTO.
Trucking Industry Mobility and Technology Coalition – TIMTC Webinar Summary 1
Within the introduction to TIMTC, webinar participants were given a tour of the TIMTC website.
It was noted that industry news and calendar content are updated regularly, and that the
website was designed to allow users to submit suggestions regarding the TIMTC website and
other TIMTC initiatives to the TIMTC staff. Participants were encouraged to visit the website
and provide feedback outlining how the website might better serve their needs.
Update on the TIMTC Freight Systems Analysis
TIMTC staff also provided an update on the TIMTC Freight Systems Analysis, specifically on
the TIMTC technology compendium. Participants were given an introduction to the
compendium’s purpose and a brief outline of the compendium’s future functionality. When
released, the TIMTC Technology Compendium will provide an online, searchable database of
current technology available to the trucking industry.
In its first iteration, the compendium will be an excel-based document, split into public and
private-sector technology offerings. During the webinar, participants were guided through
navigation of the document, and were shown sample content. The TIMTC webinar slides,
available on the TIMTC website, illustrate this discussion comprehensively.
One participant inquired as to whether the compendium would compare, for example, product
features between vendors. TIMTC staff replied that, while such functionality would not likely
be available in this first release, the capability is one that has been considered and may be
pursued in future iterations.
TIMTC Annual Meeting Summary
TIMTC staff outlined for webinar participants the sessions and presentations that occurred at
the TIMTC annual meeting. This summary and the related key points are detailed within the
webinar slides available on the TIMTC website. It was also noted during the webinar that a full
summary of the events of the annual meeting is available on the TIMTC website.
General Discussion
After recounting some of the themes that emerged at the annual meeting, TIMTC staff asked
participants to provide guidance on next steps. As a starting point, participants were shown
some of the ideas that came out of the TIMTC annual meeting, including:
• Identify incentives/incentive plans for technology adoption
• Define research problem statements
• Provide educational opportunities
Several participants questioned how, exactly, TIMTC would seek to incentivize technology
adoption. It was noted that legislation allowing tax incentives for safety technology has failed
in the past and that cost justifications have been published by U.S. DOT. Another participant
asked about the range of actions that might be taken to incentivize technology adoption, given
Trucking Industry Mobility and Technology Coalition – TIMTC Webinar Summary 2
the fact that (often strong) investment justifications do not seem to convince some fleets of the
value of technology implementation Generally, participants showed interest in considering
how TIMTC might learn from past programs to develop more widely accepted incentives in the
future.
Finally, participants offered recommendations for areas of possible TIMTC interest and
involvement. One participant recommended that TIMTC be involved in coordinating the policy
and technology angle of commercial distracted driving. Another participant requested that
TIMTC develop case studies outlining how various industry segments (e.g. early adopters,
small and medium-sized fleets, etc.) approach technology implementation. Another participant
noted the disjointed nature of technology solutions. For example, a fleet may have one
communication device for routine communications, another for the OBC, and still another for
the camera system. It was noted that a unified solution would be preferable.
Closing Remarks
Participants were thanked once more for attending the webinar. TIMTC staff noted that this
was the first in a series of webinars, and recommended that participants sign up for the TIMTC
newsletter, if they had not done so already, to receive notifications of future webinar topics.
Similarly, participants were encouraged to visit the TIMTC website and submit suggestions for
future
TIMTC initiatives.
