Monday and Saturday School Students are assigned to Monday School for violations of school and district policy. Monday School begins at 1:10 in X1 and end at 2:30. Students are assigned to Saturday School for violations of school, district and/or attendance policies. Students must come prepared with school work to fill a 4 hour block of time. Students who are ill and therefore unable to attend Saturday School must have their absence cleared by noon on the following Monday. • Students who are late to Monday or Saturday School will not be admitted. • Students who are ill and unable to attend Monday or Saturday School will be rescheduled to attend the following session. • Students who are “no-shows” to Monday or Saturday School will be suspended and/or additional disciplinary action will be taken. Online Classes Policy Per East Side Union Hight School District policy, students wishing to take online classes for credit recovery or enrichment must first obtain approval from their academic counselor. A signed contract must on file with the Associate Principal before students enroll in any online program. The IAUP policy may be viewed in its entirety on Oak Grove’s website: http://oghs.schoolloop.com. Internet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) In order to be granted use of Oak Grove’s computer equipment and access to the Internet, each student and their parents/guardians must read the Internet Acceptable Use Policy, sign and return the form to Oak Grove. AUP forms may be obtained on line or from English teachers. Misuse or violations of the AUP agreement will be punished as follows: • First Violation: A disciplinary referral will be written and the student will receive a two week suspension to computer access. • Second Violation: The student’s access to computers will be terminated for the rest of the year. Academic Integrity Policy We believe that the primary goal of an educational institution must be to facilitate all aspects of learning and to promote the values of our society. The goal of the education institution is to create an environment where ethical behavior and the pursuit of academic excellence are promoted. Cheating demonstrates a lack of integrity and character that is inconsistent with the goals and values of OGHS. This policy is designed to prevent improper conduct, which would give any student and unfair advantage. Please refer to the school website for more information regarding this policy. California Penal Code Section 308(b): It is a violation for a minor to be in possession of Tobacco Products. If you have questions about this antismoking program, please call American Lung Association Program Coordinator Dennis Achá at (408)998-5865 or dennis@lungsrus.org. 8 Tobacco/Smoking The law allows any law enforcement officer to cite a person under the age of 18 years for being in possession of any tobacco products or paraphernalia. If a student is cited for tobacco use or possession The County of Santa Clara Juvenile Probation Department’s Juvenile Diversion Unit will notify them of two choices: 1. MANDATORY Counseling Program for one (1) day at the American Lung Association (ALA) of Santa Clara-San Benito counties located at 1469 Park Avenue, San Jose, CA 95126 (Regardless of your child’s participation in a tobacco program through his/her school). • A fifty dollar ($50.00) fee is charged. This includes a twenty-five dollar ($25.00 non-refundable registration fee that must be paid in advance to enroll in the program and to guarantee seating. • Parents are REQUIRED to attend the first hour and a half (1 1/2 of the program. Failure to appear will result in loss of the twenty-five dollar ($25.00) registration fee. 2. A hearing with a Juvenile Traffic Officer can assign the following to a minor: • A seventy-five dollar ($75.00) fine • A Penalty Assessment of one hundred thirty-six dollars ($136.00) for a total of two hundred eleven dollars ($211.00) • Completion of 30 hours community service.
Attendance Policies and Procedures In order to maximize your highest academic achievement in high school, you will need to develop and maintain good attendance habits and punctuality. Every student must be in school unless it is necessary for him/her to be absent due to illness, medical/dental appointment, court subpoena or the funeral of an immediate family member. These are the only absences from school which will be excused. All students arriving late to school must have a note from a parent/guardian. It is the responsibility of the student to drop off the note signed by the parent and report directly to class; admits and tardy slips will only be issued for excused tardies. If no parent/guardian verification is received, absences or tardies will remain unexcused for each class affected. Also, students who must leave campus before the end of the school day must obtain an “Advance Absence” pass through the Attendance Office prior to leaving school. Failure to obtain an “Advance Absence” pass from the Attendance Office prior to leaving school, even with parent permission, will result in unexcused period absences. Students who do not follow attendance procedures may be referred for disciplinary action. Procedures for Student Absences 1. Contact the school (408-347-6522). It is required that a parent/guardian telephone the school as soon as possible to advise the school of the nature of and clear the absence. 2. In cases where a student is or will be absent for a period of less than five days, a parent/guardian should call the school daily and advise the Attendance Office of the condition of the student. The parent/guardian is also encouraged to contact the counseling office and teachers through School Loop for lesson assignments that have been missed. Following this procedure will help prevent the student from falling behind in his/her work. 3. If you know in advance that the absence will be more than five days in length, please contact the Attendance Secretary to apply for Short Term Independent Studies (STIS). This should be done at least five days in advance of the absence. STIS is an optional temporary educational alternative to classroom instruction. A student’s parents/guardian can opt for STIS when their child is likely to be away from school for no less than 5 days and no more than 15 consecutive days per semester. 4. Each teacher will receive daily computerized “Absence Reports” that specify the status (excused, unexcused, cut, etc.) of all absent students from his/her class the previous day. If a student does not bring his/her note to the Attendance Office early on the day he/she returns to classes, his/her name will appear on the report as “unverified” and the teacher will assume his/her absences to be a “cut” after five (5) days. Detention will be assigned for these “cuts”. The parent will still be able to clear an absence, however, the detention will remain for failure to clear the absence during the first five (5) days. Attendance California Education Code 48200: Regular attendance is mandatory for all students. Student Hall Passes: Students should not leave a scheduled class at any time during the school day without permission. If it is necessary to leave the classroom, he/she must receive a hall pass from the teacher. No students are allowed to leave class during the first or last 10 minutes of class. Students who are on campus without permission or out of class without an appropriate hall pass will be charged with a “cut” from their current class on the day. School Attendance Review Board Students with excessive absences will be subject to review by the School Attendance Review Board. (SARB). SARB is a truancy reduction program that operates in alliance with the District Attorney’s office. A student who has three or more unexcused or uncleared absences or who is tardy three times for more than thirty minutes in a school year is considered a truant. A student with more than six unexcused period absences or tardies in a school year will be assigned to attend a meeting with a school official. Failure of the student to improve attendance may result in a referral to the SARB Board, where the student and an accompanying parent/guardian will be informed of consequences. Continued truancy will result in a citation by the District Attorney for the student to attend Juvenile Court, where the judge may impose necessary sanctions on both the student and the parent/guardian. During the SARB process, students may receive: a citation of $350 and up, community service hours, and/or the loss of their driver’s license for one year or more. All students who are considered chronic truants will be assigned Saturday School either by the Oak Grove’s administration or by the District Attorney’s Office. Science Camp Juniors and seniors with a GPA of 2.0 or better are eligible to attend one Science Camp per year. The volunteer agreement and application must be completed and turned in to the Associate Principal for approval two weeks prior to the start date of any camp. Only students with good attendance (no more than 3 unverified period absences) and no recent disciplinary problems or referrals will be allowed to attend. No requests will be approved during standardized testing. 9
