General Notes on Physics subjects
First year
Students who gained a score of at least 35 in both VCE Units 3/4 Physics and VCE Units 3/4
Specialist Mathematics should take Physics 1: Advanced

Second year
Students who studied both VCE Units 3/4 Physics and VCE Units 3/4 Specialist Mathematics
and gained a score of less than 35 in either subject should take Physics 1
Students who studied VCE Units 3/4 Physics without Specialist Mathematics should take
Physics 1, together with Calculus 1 (see General Notes on Mathematics subjects, below)
Students who have studied VCE Units 3/4 Mathematical Methods and some Physics (but not
VCE Units 3/4 Physics) should take Physics 1: Fundamentals
Thermal and Classical Physics may be postponed to third year and taken concurrently with
Quantum Physics (for which it is a co‐requisite)
Vector Calculus may be taken concurrently with Electromagnetism and Optics in semester 2
General Notes on Mathematics subjects
Many of the Mathematics subjects, particularly at levels 1 and 2, are taught in both
semesters 1 and 2; a few are also taught in the Summer semester. If more flexibility is
required to fit in with other subjects, it is possible to take, say, both Vector Calculus and Real
Analysis in the same semester (either semester 1 or semester 2) in second year.
First year
Students who completed UMEP Maths in VCE should replace Linear Algebra with
Accelerated Mathematics 2. These students do not need to complete Calculus 2, provided
they achieved a raw score of at least 38 in VCE Units 3/4 Specialist Mathematics.
Students who scored at least 38 in VCE 3/4 Specialist Mathematics should replace Calculus 2
and Linear Algebra with Accelerated Mathematics 1 and Accelerated Mathematics 2.

Second year

Students who did not complete Specialist Mathematics in VCE and who attained a score of
at least 25 in VCE Units 3/4 Mathematical Methods should take Calculus 1 in first semester,
then both Linear Algebra and Calculus 2 in second semester.
Students who studied only VCE 1/2 Mathematical Methods, or who scored less than 25 in
VCE 3/4 Mathematical Methods should take Introduction to Mathematics in semester 1 and
Calculus 1 in semester 2. Linear Algebra can be taken in the Summer semester following
first year. However, these students still need to take Calculus 2 to satisfy the prerequisites
for level 2 Physics subjects. A Major in Physics may be difficult to achieve in three years.
Students who have studied Accelerated Mathematics 2 in first year do not need to enrol in
Real Analysis with Applications. They still need to take Vector Calculus.
Real Analysis with Applications and Vector Calculus are both taught in both semesters.
Vector Calculus may be taken concurrently with Electromagnetism and Optics.
