FROM THE
ARTISTIC/MANAGING DIRECTOR…
Eleemosynary: (el ’mos’ ner e) adj.
1) Of, relating to, or dependent on charity
2) Contributed as an act of charity; gratuitous
Dorothea, Artie and Echo, the three generations of women
characters in this play, are a part of a dysfunctional family
and yet each are dependent on the others.
I liked the show from the first time I read it years ago,
although I’m not entirely sure why. I guess I just loved
the characters and their flaws. It is a well-written piece by
Lee Blessing who has written several wonderful pieces for theater, “A Walk in the
Woods,” “Fortinbras,” “Nice People Dancing to Good Country Music” and “War of
the Roses.”
Once I knew what the word meant, I thought, ACT is completely eleemosynary. We
are dependent on the gifts of others: volunteer actors’ and technicians’ time and
talents; as well, as financial contributions from you, our patrons.
Unlike the characters in this performance, the ACT family is not so dysfunctional -
although we have our days. There is a certain amount of dysfunction in all our lives.
The script is also not as linear as most plays we perform and can seem disjointed as
it progresses. That’s why it is important to perform without an intermission. Don’t
worry, it’s a short play.
I hope you enjoy. Thanks for coming.
