The bidding was hot in the live auction raising a total of $22,850! Attracting the highest bids were a Boston
the Graham family; a three-night stay at the Chateau Canisy in Normandy, France, won by Alexandra Pozzo;
and a VIP chalet table with parking pass for the 2012 Hampton Classic Horse Show won by Pedro Torres.
Several JustWorld Junior Ambassadors were on hand to help ensure the evening’s success, visiting guests
tables to explain JustWorld’s projects and encouraging donations through the JustWorld ‘Adopt-A-Project’
initiative. An additional $10,380 was donated by generous guests who happily support JustWorld’s initiatives,
bringing the grand total raised for the evening to $280,360.
Guest speaker Murray S. Kessler, CEO and President of Lorillard, Inc., reminded guests that by supporting
JustWorld, they were also supporting their own children.
“Jessica and JustWorld give them an opportunity,” he said. “Kids like ours have the opportunity to be exposed
to and learn about philanthropy, and learn about caring and giving. So we’re helping the desperately
impoverished kids, but we’re also helping our own children. When you’re giving, you’re changing the lives of
others who are less fortunate, and you’re also changing the lives of those around you.”
“I am simply overwhelmed by the enormous amount of support that the Wellington and equestrian
communities have shown us,” said Jessica Newman, Executive Director of JustWorld International. “It is
incredible to think that we are now in our ninth year, yet we still keep growing and growing. This was our
biggest and most successful fundraising gala yet! I can’t thank everyone enough, from our generous sponsors,
Gala committee members, donors and guests, to our team of JustWorld Ambassadors, staff and volunteers,
who never cease to amaze me with their commitment and endless energy for the work that we do.”
Project Progress Report Continued from page 1
The clinic also started full speed ahead with new equipment to monitor children’s health. JustWorld supports health, nutrition
and after-school programs for more than 250 children at Los Patojos.
Across Honduras, JustWorld’s program partners also began an exciting year of work and activities!
AngelWorks is once again providing a new year of scholarships to approximately 250 children in the rural outskirts of
Tegucigalpa, rewarding and fostering their efforts to excel at school and break the cycle of poverty. This year, United Way is
joining us in supporting the cause, a great development for the scope and future sustainability of this amazing program.
At Compartir the Mobile Library Project has considerably expanded its reach, now providing reading and literacy programs to
more than 2,000 impoverished children in three urban slums and recent opening five regional libraries to help children inside
the communities after curfew hours. By holding science fairs, youth book clubs and other literacy activities – in addition to
running the mobile library - Compartir is actively promoting a culture of children’s protection and education in one of the most
needed areas in the country.
With a strong team of committed social activists, The Natalie Johnson (NJC) Center for a JustWorld opened its doors for another
year of tutoring, sports, nutrition, music and arts programs, helping around 130 Garifuna children orphaned or affected by HIV/
AIDS, and reaching into the community of Tornabé as whole.
Finding a new home in the beautiful coastal town of Tornabé, the JustWorld Painting Program also began its activities at the
NJC this year, offering art education to children and youth and empowering them with new skills as they explore a new market
for sustainable revenue growth within the development of the tourism industry.
By bridging communities of caring individuals around the world, we are not only making a difference for the children in
impoverished areas, but also engaging our ambassadors as critical thinkers and global citizens, partaking in meaningful social
change while they pursue their aspirations in and out of the show ring.
There are still many great projects in need of adoption! Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like more information,
have ideas, or would like to support one in your fundraising activities. We also encourage you to join our delegations to visit/
volunteer at our projects and witness firsthand how your efforts are making a difference!
By empowering others, we empower ourselves. This year, JustWorld International is committed to make a difference, and
continue giving children a leg up for a brighter future!
Stay tuned for our next newsletter installment, with news and stories from our project partners!
Delegation Visits: Guatemala
Have you been on the greatest adventure of your life? If not (or you are now curious), join
us on a delegation trip to visit a JustWorld project and we promise that not only will it
be the beginning of many great adventures, but that it just may change your life forever.
Because when a group of individuals gets together from different countries and cultures,
something amazing happens - they start to ask questions (Q: Do you have computers
in Honduras? A: Yes, I have a MacBook Pro.), tell stories (how Dead Mou5 got its name),
look out for each other (knocking on doors to make sure no one missed their alarms
due to DST and the power going out), and form friendships that go beyond Facebook.
So please, sit back and relax as you enjoy the following “fast facts” and heart-warming
accounts from two Junior Ambassadors’ adventures to Guatemala, and join us on the
next trip!
• Guatemala: means “the land of trees” [Q: Which Ambassador learned to climb a tree
while on the trip? Read on to find out!]
• Guatemala City: capital of Guatemala, and location of La Aurora International airport and beautiful Hotel Vista Real
• Antigua: location of Finca Filadelfia, Parque Central, art museum, outdoor market, and Los Patojos!
• Antigua’s sister cities: Glendale, California; Zapopan, Mexico; Coral Gables, Florida; Sevilla, Spain; and San Francisco de Quito,
Ecuador:
- Finca Filadelphia (translates to “farm of brotherly love) is famous for its coffee plantation. Arabica beans were originally
brought here from Africa by Jesuits in the mid-18th century. The climate, altitude and soil provide excellent conditions
for growing coffee beans - look for their coffee the next time you’re at Starbucks!
- Care to see the mountains, volcanoes, and the Panchoy Valley from 150 meters above ground? Take the zip line tour
at Finca Fidelfia, which has runs up to 520 meters long!
• San José Pinula: location of Festival Ecuestre El Cortijo
- El Cortijo: international horse show which attracts riders from Mexico, Central America, and South America
Thank you to the following Ambassadors for your participation: Natalie Bova (Canada), Max Beaumont (NY), Brianne Link (NY),
Jordan Matteri (CA), Madison Bradshaw (CA), Tiffany Molina (Honduras), Isa Corletto (Guatemala), Sebastian Cheves (Guatemala),
Rafael Cheves (Guatemala), Daniel Aguirre (Guatemala), Ernesto Canseco (Holland), and Juan Andres Rodriguez (Guatemala)
as well as JustWorld family members who joined us: Carter Bradshaw (CA), Tucker Bradshaw (CA), Cooper Bradshaw (CA), Linda
Link (NY), Jim Baumann (NY), Perry Beaumont (NY), Catherine Weber de Rize (Guatemala), Deborah Aguirre (Guatemala),
and Brenda Corletto (Guatemala). A big thank you for your participation in JustWorld activities during the trip and welcome
to the family to the following new Ambassadors: Nicole Morel (Guatemala), Ines Minondo (Guatemala), Wylder Rodriguez
(Guatemala), Eduardo Castillo (Mexico), and Maria Gabriella Brugal (Dominican Republic). We are grateful for your support,
passion and commit to working together for a JustWorld!
Thank you to Wiepke van de Lageweg, Oswaldo Brugal, Pedro Aguirre, and Juan Kaye for donating your winnings from the
team competition to JustWorld; Luis Morales for donating proceeds from photo sales, and Deborah Aguirre and Nicole Morel
for organizing and running the used tack and sno-cone sales for JustWorld, and all of the participants in the Horseless Horse
Show! Together, we raised over $4,000 which went directly to Los Patojos!
Delegation trips are not just for Junior Ambassadors - siblings, parents, and supporters are welcome to join and experience
the history, art, and culture that is unique to each of the communities where a JustWorld partner is located, and visit with
the children directly supported by funds raised through the international equestrian community. Most of the souvenirs you
take back can’t be screened by customs- memories, knowledge, understanding, and appreciation that will last forever! For
information on upcoming trips, please contact Naomi Spillane.
Memories of Guatemala November 2011
By Brianne Link
Going to Guatemala for my fourth time was amazing. Being able to go to the project
and see how much JustWorld helps these kids is breathtaking. When I went to visit;
I got so many hugs from all the kids. I missed them so much and I think they missed
me, too. The last time I saw the kids was two years ago! When I was last there, they
had just finished the medical center. I had raised money to help pay for it.
The second time I went to Guatemala, there was a little girl who gave me a hug
every five minutes. The next time I came back Juan Pablo told me she had passed
away. She had a simple cold, which turned into pneumonia. Her parents couldn't
buy her medicine. When I heard the whole story I knew I had to do something
to help. Coming back to Guatemala and being able to see the medical center all
finished with all the medicine on the shelves and the doctor at work was heart
melting.
Los Potojos has made so much progress. They now have more buildings for the
different age groups. All the walls are being painted by the young artists the school
has. The JustWorld Ambassadors were able to paint one wall. I was so happy to be
able to paint a wall that says JustWorld International on it because now, next time I
go to Guatemala, I'll be able to look at that wall and think of all the great memories.
I had a great time with all the other ambassadors that came to Guatemala: Madison
Bradshaw, Cooper Bradshaw, Tucker Bradshaw, Jordan Matteri, Tiffany Molina,
Natalie Bova, and my good friend Max Beaumont. This was the best group of kids I
have been with out of all my trips to Guatemala. I bonded with all of them so quickly
that by the end of the trip, I felt like we were all brothers and sisters. I didn't want to
have to leave. I must have hugged everyone at least 10 times before we left.
I also met people at the horse show. I became great friends with Isa Corletto,
Sebastian Cheves, Ralpha Cheves, Daniel Aguirre, and Maria Brugal. They also
became my brothers and sisters. Madison, Natalie, Max, Jordan, Tiffany, Isa,
Maria, Sebastian, and I all competed. We all did amazing. Max was even in the
local newspaper! I made it to the top four in my division and competed on Sunday.
Everyone had to switch horses. I got to ride my horse (loaned to me by Juan
Andres) and all three of the other people's horses around the same course. I ended
up winning a huge trophy with a beautiful second place ribbon. Isa took the first
place trophy. I was so proud of her!
I did many things for the first time on the trip. The only other time you switch horses
and do the same course on all of them is in the World Equestrian Games. I was so
happy I took second in that competition. I went zip lining with everyone for my first
time. It was so much fun! I was also so proud that I climbed to the top of a tree at the
horse show with Cooper! I was able to see everyone from up there.
I will always remember this trip. I had such a great time, seeing all the kids and
riding at the horse show. But no matter what, I will always remember the new things
I did and all the people I met and became friends with. They made this my favorite
trip ever! I would have never been able to go without my mom so thank you to her
for coming on the trip. All of my new friends made this trip so memorable and so
much fun that it wouldn't have been the same without them! I want to give a special
“thank you” to Juan Andreas for letting me use his horse for the horse show and to
Natalie Bova for training me. Thanks to Naomi and Amber for helping to make the
trip so great.
And I can never thank Jessica Newman enough for making all of this possible. She
is a very special person, and I will be forever grateful that she came into my life
at such a young age and opened my eyes to all of these wonderful children. I am
looking forward to my next trip!
My Week in Guatemala
By Maxwell Beaumont
My past week in Guatemala has made me into a better, more mature, man. I have
grown up since the morning I left just one week ago. So much has happened in
between then and now, that I have trouble thinking it was only a short while ago. I
will give you a brief summary on what went on over my seven days in Guatemala.
On day one, after landing, we checked in at the hotel and met everyone. On day
two, we set off to the coffee plantation to go on a zip line adventure and to have
lunch. Later that day we met the children at Los Patojos for the first time. What I
saw there was truly life changing.
I walked into the room and was instantly greeted with hugs and laughs, and smiley
faces. Every one of the kids looked thrilled to be there with us. The part that was
so surprising to me was the happiness in all of these children. You would expect
someone who has almost nothing to be depressed. These children looked at it
differently; they were thankful for what they did have rather then what they didn't.
I loved spending time with these kids, which we did the next day also. On days
four, five, and six, we spent the day at the horse show. On day six, the children
came and joined us for the day. After all these wonderful experiences, it was hard
to say good bye to all my new friends on day seven. I had an amazing time, and
will definitely be going back.
One of the main things I took away from this experience was maturity, thankfulness,
and appreciation in what I had. I feel like a stranger coming back to this world I
lived in all my life. I see things through a different eye when I walk down the street,
and for this I am thankful. Thank you JustWorld, for providing an organization for
kids like me who can have this life changing perspective of our world. I am truly
grateful.
Fundraising Efforts: Blenheim EquiSports
Blenheim EquiSports went "all in" and kicked off their partnership with JustWorld
International at the 2011 CSI2*-W Las Vegas National last November at the South
Point Hotel and Casino. You can bet it was a great time, as competitors raced over
a course of sponsored obstacles in the signature JustWorld Horseless Horse Show.
And for a packed house, a select group of competitors jumped their highest in
the JustWorld High Jump under the bright lights during the $50,000 Las Vegas
World Cup Grand Prix.
“We see tremendous opportunity to expand JustWorld’s outreach to the
equestrian community on the west coast by developing a partnership,” said
Melissa Brandes-Braunstein, Senior Vice-President of Marketing for Blenheim
EquiSports. Blenheim will host three JustWorld Horseless Horse Show at its
events in California during the 2012 season, helping to raise awareness and funds
for JustWorld's project sites.
“Any organization that selflessly devotes itself to helping others in need is worthy
of support from a group that has the incredible privileges of not only riding but
also competing, as many equestrians do,” noted Brandes-Braunstein. “We look
forward to expanding the partnership in 2012.”
Thank you, Blenheim Equisports!
Hampton Classic
Over $13,000 was raised to benefit JustWorld International projects at the 2011
Hampton Classic Horse Show, which took place in Bridgehampton, NY, this past
September. Fundraising activities included the fifth annual Horseless Horse Show
presented by Sam Edelman and Hollow Brook Associates, the silent auction that
took place during the annual exhibitor’s party, the sales of JustWorld “Hamptons
2011” t-shirts donated by Olive and Bette’s NY as well as a percentage of sales from
the sales of Sundance Kisses Healthy Horse Treats, and Carolynn Rockafellow’s
sponsorship of the JustWorld International Children’s Jumper Classic. JustWorld
International would like to thank longtime partner, The Hampton Classic Horse
raising $11,607 in support of JustWorld
Thunderbird held several fundraising
and awareness events during the competitions, including a Horseless Horse Show,
silent auction, Groom’s Class, Family Extravaganza Equitation Class and various
calcuttas.
Thunderbird Show Park identified JustWorld's Cambodia Rice for Families Project
at Stung Mean Chey in Cambodia as the project they wanted to raise funds for.
far exceeded their target of $9,000! The money they raised went directly to the
project, giving families in the Stung Mean Chey garbage dump a 5kg bag of rice
each month, helping to reduce the need for children to gather food scraps or to
earn money by picking through trash.
Second Annual STRUT! Fashion for a JustWorld
In a production that wowed the crowd, the second annual ‘Strut! Fashion for a Just
World,’ presented by Horseware Ireland, was once again a huge success as the biggest
names in horse sport took to the runway, showing off the latest looks in equestrian
lifestyle fashion.
The house was packed with more than 200 attendees enjoying the exciting
atmosphere. The music was pumping as the models strutted down the runway as if
on the catwalks of New York Fashion Week. Flashbulbs ignited as the models struck
poses, some saucy, some silly, and all highly entertaining.
In addition to featuring Horseware Ireland’s Pessoa collection, other brands
featured included Le Fash, Asmar Equestrian, Dyer Equestrian, Grand Prix, Pikeur,
GPA, and Konigs, Ariat, Der Dau, Goode Rider, The WEF Boutique, Zest, Skiffington
LLC, Eleganté Polo of Palm Beach, and a look by Sofie Belgium Boutique, which was
provided with the generous support of the Ruziska family.
One highlight of the evening was the live auction that took place while the models
encouraged participation from the runway. Feverish bidding ensued for a polo lesson
with American 8-goal player Mike Azzaro and a date with handsome Swedish grand
prix rider Daniel Zetterman. In the end, Alice Lawaetz walked away with the polo
lesson with her bid of $1,000, while Lisa Skiffington won the date with the Swedish
show jumper for $600.
Horseware Ireland's founder and managing director, Tom MacGuinness, came up with
the idea of holding a fashion show last year to launch the brand’s new Pessoa clothing
line as well as to benefit JustWorld.
“Once again, the Strut! fashion show was a great success,” said long time supporter
MacGuinness, whose company donates a portion of every fly sheet it sells to supply
mosquito nets to JustWorld’s project sites in Cambodia. “It’s proven to be a great
venue for equestrian industry manufacturers and vendors to show off their beautiful
clothing, all while supporting JustWorld and the work that they do for children in need
around the world.”
Ambasssador Spotlight – Samantha Lam
Samantha Lam of Vancouver, Canada, has been a JustWorld
Rider Ambassador for just two short years, and in that time she
has already made a tremendous impact on JustWorld’s initiatives.
Representing the Hong Kong equestrian team in international
competition, including the 2008 Olympic Games, Samantha has
spent her time as an Ambassador promoting JustWorld, and
recruiting fellow riders, teammates, and friends to the cause.
“I first became a JustWorld Ambassador in 2010,” explained
Samantha, 33. “I have known JustWorld’s founder, Jessica
Newman, for a very long time. In fact, we rode together as
juniors back in the day. I thought it would be great to become an
ambassador, and thought what Jessica was doing was brilliant.
“I think that anyone in this business who rides professionally, or
just for fun, knows what a privileged life we have,” she continued.
“It’s so important to recognize that not everyone has that kind
of opportunity, and it’s wonderful to be able to give back to an
organization that is making a difference in the lives of so many
children.”
Her belief in JustWorld’s projects has led Samantha to actively
recruit as many new ambassadors as possible in hopes of
spreading the world about what the not-for-profit organization
stands for.
“I’m trying to get everyone involved and interested and aware of who JustWorld is and what they are doing,” said
Samantha, who is based in Belgium. “With recruiting my Hong Kong teammates and European friends, raising their
awareness about JustWorld, and then getting them to get their friends involved, I’m hoping we can create a bigger
circle and make the JustWorld fundraising events as popular in Asia and Europe as they are in North America.”
In addition to advocating for JustWorld, Samantha also actively donates a portion of her prize money.
“I remember that after I received some unexpected prize money, I walked down to Jessica’s hotel room that night
and handed her an envelope full of money, about a thousand Euros,” she recalls. “It just felt really good. It might
not have been a substantial amount of money for many people in the horse world, but it’s a huge, huge amount for
people in developing countries.”
She recently spearheaded a campaign to adopt an entire initiative at JustWorld’s project site in Cambodia.
“I rallied everyone I could together to try and ‘adopt’ two school teachers in Cambodia,” she said. “I said to them,
‘I’m putting money in myself and was wondering if you would be able to put something towards it?’ My friends and
teammates have been very supportive and think it’s a great idea. We already have all of the $5,000 to make that
happen. I have been really lucky they have reacted in such a positive way and I hope they’ll be able to motivate more
people to donate in the future.”
While Samantha hasn’t had the opportunity to visit any of JustWorld’s project sites as of yet, she hopes to make a trip
to Cambodia in the near future.
“Now that we have finished adopting the project, I really hope to take a trip over and see what we have
accomplished,” remarked Samantha. “It will be amazing to meet the children and see what everything is like. I’m
really excited to go!”
Despite a hectic training and competition schedule, Samantha will continue to support and promote JustWorld
International, and says she is honored to be a part of such a life-changing organization.
Supporter Spotlight – Monica Ward
Monica Ward of Carlsbad, California, has been lending her voice
and her spirit to helping increase awareness of JustWorld’s cause
for more than four years. As a partner and manager of Equ
Lifestyle Boutique, she is well-versed in equestrian living and
a fixture at the horse shows up and down the west coast of the
United States.
Mother to six-year-old Christopher Hiett, Ward has been actively
involved in the equestrian community for over 30 years as both as
a business professional and rider, and has competed as a junior,
amateur and professional throughout Canada, the United States
and Mexico.
The 40-year-old first became involved with JustWorld International
on the advice of veteran United States Equestrian Team rider
Francie Steinwedell-Carvin, a long-time JustWorld Professional
Rider Ambassador. A former competitor herself, Ward was
immediately captivated by the work being done by JustWorld, and
the support it was receiving from the equestrian community.
© Sportfot
“I believed in Jessica’s spirit and her commitment,” explained
Ward of why she first partnered with the organization. “I have
a strong commitment to the west coast being very active for
JustWorld. I work with the shows and support their events 110%.”
It is that dedication to seeing an increased awareness of JustWorld’s initiatives along the west coast that has
driven Ward to become such an important fixture in JustWorld’s fundraising efforts. She has been involved with
organizing and running JustWorld’s signature Horseless Horse Shows, donated her time to numerous community
fundraisers, and taken part in the sales of bracelets and iPhone Skins to support the project sites in Brazil,
Cambodia, Guatemala, and Honduras.
“I help coordinate all of the functions with the shows,” she said. “I provide a place where all the southern California
ambassadors can meet and organize events. Constant communication of JustWorld is how everyone is educated
on the charity and all of its benefits.”
Her favorite JustWorld memory to date is taking part in the Las Vegas National Horse Show at the South Point
Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“All of the ambassadors worked very hard to make it such a special show for JustWorld,” she noted. The event
featured a Horseless Horse Show and JustWorld High Jump competition, in addition to providing competitors and
spectators with information about JustWorld’s important work.
While Ward hasn’t personally been to any of JustWorld’s project sites, she hopes to visit one soon, saying “I would
love to be able to go and spend time at one of the project sites!”
Until then, Ward will continue to be a vital part of JustWorld’s volunteer force, bringing an infectious energy and
optimism to her work to promote awareness about JustWorld’s initiatives, and to every one of the numerous
JustWorld fundraising initiatives she is involved with.
First pilot of the Ambassadors Leadership Program begins!
Coming together to foster leadership skills and empower equestrian youth as global
citizens, JustWorld international, in partnership with Private Tutoring Services, began its
first pilot project of the Ambassador Leadership Program.
In tune with JustWorld’s vision of involving their ambassadors in meaningful social change
and providing them a space for personal growth, Private Tutoring Services support will
supply a practical structure and mentorship, enhancing their life learning skills, while
creating opportunities for less fortunate children, their education and well-being.
“The opportunity for our students to participate in leadership training while they are
competing and traveling is a great compliment to their academic programs,” said Joanne
Weiner, Executive Director of Private Tutoring Services. “Experiencing first-hand the
impact of their fundraising and organizational efforts will be a life-changing experience.”
This group, formed by young JustWorld Ambassadors and current PTS students, comes from various disciplines in
the equestrian sport such as show jumping and dressage. These youth will put their leadership skills to test, working
together and fundraising to help support JustWorld’s newest initiative in Brazil. The participants will have the unique
experience of traveling to Brazil this summer to witness the effect of their hard work.
“I am very excited about our partnership with Private Tutoring Services,” expressed Jessica Newman. “JustWorld has
grown to a point where it is time to develop a more structured leadership program for our Ambassadors, to give them
the skills to reach their potential, and have a substantial impact on our projects.”
Fun in France!
JustWorld is extremely excited to be partnering with the international horse show, Jumping Chantilly 2012 and the 2012
European Pony Championships in Fontainebleau from July 17-22.
JustWorld International acts as a catalyst for positive change in the developing world
by working with local partner organizations to provide basic education, nutrition,
health, hygiene, and vocational programs for children in impoverished communities in
Honduras, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Brazil.
Through JustWorld programs that raise awareness and funds in the international
equestrian community, riders and their friends learn about the needs of others across
the globe as they give thousands of children a leg up to a brighter future.
Through generous contributions and in-kind donations earmarked for operations, 83%
of all funds raised go directly to our programs.
Founded by former international equestrian champion Jessica Newman, JustWorld International is a recognized
501(c)(3) charitable organization in the United States and a registered Association 1901 in France. Local branches
have also been established in Mexico and Honduras. JustWorld International has no political or religious affiliation.
