Amber Campbell recently won the National Science Foundation Graduate
Research Fellowship Award for 2006. Amber is a graduate student
at Emory University at Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated from CHS in
2001 and completed her undergraduate degree at Kansas State University
“I'm currently working on a number of papers including one on female genital
schistosomiasis as a risk factor for HIV infection, one on the statistically validity
of a popular discriminant function program in forensic anthropology and one
on whether human hairlessness is an adaptation or an exaptation and just what
one would have to prove to come to a solid conclusion on that question. Hopefully,
I will finish all of them by May 5th so that I'm finished with the semester
before I leave for my DNA training in Canada. I don't have much in the way of
plans for the rest of the summer, but I have heard stirrings that one of my
friends may know someone looking for someone with osteological knowledge
to help out on an archaeological dig in South America somewhere. We shall see
if that works out.”
FCCLA holds an Easter Egg Hunt for Preschoolers
FCCLA, sponsored by Cyndi Atwell, put on an Easter Egg Hunt for the district preschool on April 11, 2006. Preschoolers
Graders
Challenge
CCCC Men’s
Basketball
Team
On Wednesday, April 12th, the CCCC Men’s Basketball team challenged the 5th and 6th grade Morning Intramural
Basketball Championship teams at the CMS gym. In December, the students had an opportunity to sign-up to play morning
intramural basketball. There were approximately 50 students from each grade who participated. The Morning Intramural
teams played in a double elimination tournament from January until March, to determine who would play the CCCC men’s
team.
The students on the 5th grade championship team were: Erin Hansen, Brentin Hake, Dakota Strong, Daniel Longfellow,
Jarin Brown, Alyssa Champlin, and Nathan Gieber. The 5th grade team won against the CCCC team as they barely
pulled out on top with an 18-15 score.
The students on the 6th grade championship team were: Joe Feight, Devin Fleming, Derick Nordell, Dalton Fraser,
David Strait, and Skyler Muff. They captured the win over CCCC by a score of 22-20.
The student body of CMS cheered on both teams and enjoyed watching the games.
The CMS staff and student body give a special thank you to Coach Kevin Muff, Coach of the Year;
Coach Shawn Ellis and their basketball team. Thanks for the past 5 years of challenging our 5th
and 6th grade basketball stars!!
“Paws”itive Counts
If a Middle School student is caught doing any of the following,
(showing good behavior, showing great strides in their
CHESS NEWS
All-Star State Chess rankings were released last week. The top ten for the state are determined by adding together
the team points for the top three tournaments with the state tournament counting double. Teams are then ranked by
the average of these tournaments. The Concordia Junior High team earned second place in the state and the elementary
team received fourth in their respective divisions. Logan Whitney placed 4th in the state under
the All-State individual rankings. People interested in viewing all the teams and individuals in the top ten
may go to www.ksca.us and click on "all-star rankings".
Hoops for Heart
This year, the CMS students raised $4,845.90. The student fundraisers that raised over $200 were:
Courtney Lanoue, Hannah Haist, Christa Deneault, and Koral Plush. Students who raised between
$100-$199 were: Anna Christenson, Katie Buckland, Devin Fleming, Cameron Krager, Emily Brown,
Nikki Blankenbeckley, Tristin Morgan, and Kristen Stupka. Hannah, who raised $258.25, and Courtney,
who raised $247.90, won the "P.E. Teacher of the Day" award for raising the most money in the
school. The top 5th grade class who raised the most money was Mr. Hutchinson's class, $751.00;
and the top 6th grade class who raised the most money was Mrs. Carol Ruud's class, $646.25. These
two classes won a pizza and ice cream party, donated by Pizza Hut and Dairy Queen.
This year has been a special year for raising money for the American Heart Association. The
students at CMS have adopted a school in Louisiana that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina; a
P.E. equipment company, U.S. Games, has donated money vouchers to the school that the CMS
students adopted. This school district was the hardest hit in the New Orleans area. The name of
the school that the students adopted is St. Bernard Parish Public School. The school re-opened
in November with approximately 350 students and now there are over 2,500 students attending
this school. The school has not been re-built; in fact, the school buildings are 17 temporary
FEMA buildings located on a former high school parking lot. St. Bernard Parish Public School is
designating the $200 money vouchers for "Field Day" equipment, since currently there is no
equipment for their end-of-the-year Field Day.
Thank you to ALL the CMS students, who participated in this wonderful program!! And, a sincere
"thank you" goes out to you from Mrs. Beverly Lawrason, Superintendent of St. Bernard's Parish Public
Schools, and from Jerel Giarusso, Louisiana Department of Education.

Rock on Raku!!!
Student’s in Tami Peltier’s 3-D Art II class got a chance to raku fire
some of their pottery. Raku is a method of firing pottery. We use
special clay and glazes designed to withstand thermoshock. After the
vessel has been formed it is dried and bisque fired in the traditional
method of firing. Then it is glazed and then it goes in the kiln and is
heated to about 1800 degrees. It is then taken from the kiln and put
into a barrel of combustibles (sawdust, paper) where it ignites the
combustibles in the barrel. After this burns for 30 seconds or so, the
lid is put on and the fire is deprived of oxygen. This creates smoke
and essentially smokes the pot. The reduction in oxygen changes the
appearance of the glaze….See the slide show on the USD 333 website,
to see more on this exciting process.
On Wednesday, April 19, 2006 Concordia High School students
participated in the 2006 Career Fair sponsored by the
Smoky Hill Service Center in Salina. Students from Brenda
Gilliland’s business classes and Cyndi Atwell’s FACS classes
competed in a number of events. Concordia High School was
well represented with many students placing in the top three of
their respective events. Michael Lynn, 1st in Flyer/Brochure;
Jessica Blochlinger, 2nd in Job Search; Jessica Peterson, 1st in
Children’s Book; Rosa Foreman, 2nd in Fashion Design; Teri
Trost, 3rd in Fashion Design; Madison Timmons, 2nd in Poetry
Book and 1st in Job Search; Sara Hasenbank, 2nd in Calendar
Design; Samantha Carpentier, 2nd in Calendar Design; and Jordan
Tholstrup, 3rd in Calendar Design. Some of the many
events that the students were able to compete in included job
interview, web design, desktop publishing (calendars, cookbooks,
flyers, brochures, poetry books, and children’s books),
fashion design, LEGO design, newscasts, videos, architectural
models, welding, automotive diagnostics, and electrical wiring.
Students enjoyed the opportunity to interact with and learn from
professionals who served as judges in the events.
CHS Chemistry Students Do Well in Olympiad
Three Concordia High School students who recently
took the Wichita Section of the 2006 U.S. National Chemistry
Olympiad qualified to take the national test. Only eight of the
students from across the state taking the exam achieved this
honor.
Stuart Warkentin and Ryan Steinert were among the
top placers with Warkentin earning fifth place and Steinert
earning sixth place. Ryan LaBarge was the first alternate in
ninth place.
The Concordians were being tested in a section competition
with students from much larger schools. Only students
from private schools in Wichita fared better than the
CHS students. Of those taking the national test in Wichita on
April 22 nd , two will be picked for the national team for international
competition. Sponsor of the Olympiad is the American
Chemical Society.
On Wednesday, April 12 th , Concordia hosted the
KSHSAA State Large Group Contest. Nearly 20 schools
from this part of the state competed in the Band and
Choir Contest. The bands performed at the CHS Auditorium,
while the choirs performed at the CCCC Cook
Theater. Both the Concordia Women’s Ensemble and
the Concordia Chamber Choir performed for the 3
judges. Both groups received a Superior “1” Rating!
Only 4 schools received Superior Ratings that day, and
we were very proud to have 2 groups from Concordia
High School receive that honor.
The final concert of the year will be the Spring Vocal
Concert held on Tuesday May 16 th at 7:00 in the CHS
COUNSELOR’S CORNER
by Larry Laas
The enrollment process for next year is just about completed. If your student has not completed a schedule for next year,
have him or her contact the Guidance Office immediately. If you have any question concerning classes or the new schedule
for next year, feel free to give us a call at 243-1100.
During enrollment, several parents asked questions concerning the dual credit classes. These are available to juniors and
seniors for college credit. Currently, CHS will be offering 35 hours of college credit classes. Next fall, about the second or
third week of school, we will enroll those students interested in taking these classes for college credit. Tuition fees will be
due about the first of September, so begin budgeting and saving your money now. This year, a three-hour credit class cost
$187.50. When compared to a three hour class at a four-year university at the cost of about $450.00, this is a tremendous
savings. And our cost includes your textbook! Give Mr. Laas a call in the High School Guidance Office if you have any
questions concerning dual credit classes.
Many of the seniors are finalizing plans for next year. Several have signed letters of intent to play sports while others have
accepted some very nice academic scholarships to help with those college expenses. If any senior still needs help with applications
or college visits, stop by the Guidance Office.
JUNIORS, it’s never too early to begin visiting college campuses and talking with academic advisors. This summer is a
GREAT time to call an admissions office at your favorite college or university and see what they can arrange for you.
Again, if you need a telephone number or if we can help schedule that college visit, just give us a call.
And to ALL, have a safe and wonderful summer vacation. We will look forward to working with you again next fall. BUT
FIRST, there is still much to do before this school year is put to rest.
Eleven CHS Science Club members and their sponsors attended the 2006 Kansas Olympiad at Wichita
State University, April 1 st . The students served as event volunteers assisting coordinators with staging
trials, recording information, distributing testing materials, and monitoring exams. As volunteers, CHS students
were given special access to events and testing conditions otherwise available only to students
whose school teams placed at their respective regional Olympiads. Armed with this new information, Science
Club members’ goals are to prepare over the Summer for the Salina Regional and advance to the
2007 Kansas and National Olympiads both of which will be hosted by Wichita State University.
Your Own Back Door
By Fourth Grade Teachers
Where can you learn about history, architecture, geography
and the judicial system? The answer is Cloud County.
Fourth graders are in the process of learning aspects of all of
the above and more as they explore the county in which they
live.
County residents have been gracious to the students in
the fourth grade. Nancy Reynolds gave a history lesson on a
famous native, Frank Carlson, as we visited the Frank Carlson
Room in the library. Another landmark fourth grade toured
was the Brown Grand Theater where Amanda Watterman recounted
the theater’s rich history. Students were able to look at
the architecture of a historical building, the Nazareth Motherhouse,
as Sister Margaret Schreck gave a tour. County Attorney
Robert Walsh arranged for students to become part of a
mock trial in the Cloud County Courtroom.
Cloud County Day is planned in May for students to
trek through history as they visit Sibley Schoolhouse, and what
was Sibley Lake. The P.O.W. Camp will help students understand
the role this area took in World War II. The stone arch
bridge, restored by Ray Doyen, will allow students to view a
structure as a keystone is explained. The highlight of the day
will include a hike to the highest point in Cloud County, Twin
Mounds. Kenneth Johnson allows students to have a picnic
lunch as they look out over the county from this vantage point.
Guest speakers, such as Roger Nelson and Lowell May,
also help students learn about the area. Students review what
they have learned as they create a game. A culminating event
will be the music program on May 11 th . Much can be learned
from “Your Own Back Door.”

K-6 Parents:
STOCK MARKET GAME
During the spring semester, sixth graders participated in the Stock Market Game sponsored by K-State. The students were
given $100,000 of pretend funds to invest in the market. Students completed market research to determine which stocks they
wanted to buy. They also completed skits about the operation of the New York Stock Exchange. The vocabulary of the stock
market were emphasized. Students learned about risk and diversification, as well as the difference between stocks, bonds, and
mutual funds.
One of the student teams from Concordia earned first place. The team members were Devin Fleming, Skyler Muff, Austin
Dobrinski, and Cameron Krager. The students and teachers would like to thank Home and School for paying the entry fee for
the game. Thanks for providing the experience!
