Any lost, damaged books or finesmust be cleared before grade cards are released for the year. Please encourage your children tohandle these responsibilities before leaving school for the summer.Friday, March 2 nd , was a day of reading and sharing books with the classes in both buildings. Mrs. BethWhisler, CCCC instructor, CCCC students came and read books to CES school children. The children had avariety of books and stories read to them throughout the day.We would like to thank Mrs. Whisler and her students for helping with this fun day. Students who helped fromCCCC were: Blake, Boling, Stephanie Clark, Jill Cote, Michael Hendrichs, Kody Melhus, Kim Muff, RonetteOestreich, Raela Rheames, Andrea Sidey, Madison Timmons, Billy Wilkinson, and Ashley Wilson.Mrs. Whisler’s group also donated towards new books for CES library and those were purchased at the LibraryTriConference in Topeka this month. Another big THANK YOUgoes to these readers and our very own Cat in the Hat, Deanna Kymer. Deanna is the new CES library parawho came after Christmas this year. She is a wonderful addition to an outstanding staff.I also want to thank my CES library staff Betty Cyphers, Kay Solt, and Deanna Kymer for all of their help inthis endeavor. The nutritious snacks and cake were provided by Angela Dittmer’s food service staff. The children, readers and staff enjoyed these tremendously. Thanks to the local KNEA organization for its help in all of the Dr. Seuss activities and providing financial helpfor the snacks and other items needed. Reading is our district’s number one goal and we want to encouragelife-long readers. Please take the time to share your love of reading with your child today.CES and CMS libraries have been very busy with new books and discovering new authors. As usual studentsare trying to meet their AR goals at their levels. They love to share with each other titles that they have enjoyed. If you were to visit the libraries, you might see 2 or 3 students checking out the same book so that theycan talk about it as they read it. It always seems more enjoyable if you can share a book with a friend.CES library paras have been very busy all year. Mrs. Kymer works with kindergarten through 2 nd grade andis a wonderful addition to our staff. Mrs. Betty Cyphers is our cataloger and Mrs. Kay Solt is our ciriculationpara. All of these ladies are great to suggest books to both students and teachers. Mrs. Cyphers is also workingon lexile levels with books and Mrs. Solt and Mrs. Kymer are helpers in this task when they have time.Ask Mrs. Cyphers about removing stickers and labels, a never-ending job. Mrs. Cyphers has also been coveringthe new books from Scholastic Book Fair, too! Please take the time to let them know that you appreciatetheir efforts to keep CES library pleasant and fun to visit.Mrs. Denise Letourneau creates a welcome environment for the CMS students to come and find new books toread and enjoy. After Scholastic Book Fair Mrs. Letourneau has been busy putting covers on the free booksCMS received as well as cataloging them. She is always cheery and gives a smile to those who enter her domain.Thank you Mrs. Letourneau for all that you do and so many times without thanks. We do appreciateyou so much.(continued on back)

Mrs. Sharon Applebee and Mrs. Florence Girard are the wonderful paras at CHS library. Mrs. Applebeewears many hats as she takes care of Channel One, the media [overhead projectors, TVs, videos, etc.], ARreports, overdues and fines. She just finished running overdue and fine lists that went out in the progress reports.Sharon always has a smile and is ready to help in any way that she can for both students and staff. Her biggestresponsibility at this time of year is ILL –Inter-Library Loans for all the research papers taking place atCHS right now. This is a huge job as Sharon has to check all the materials in from ILL, match them with thestudent/staff request, give them temporary barcodes and due dates. The mailman is always excited when theresearch papers are at an end as there are many, many boxes to deliver and pick up during this time.Mrs. Girard is our circulation/catalog para. She may look as though it is just a routine day while she is behindthe desk, but she is one of the best multi-taskers around. Florence is always helping me find a book that maybe out of print or a better price. Therefore, Florence may be looking at 2 or 3 vendors, still checking books inand out, while checking reviews or putting AR tests in the cart on Renaissance Learning. Mrs. Girard also findssources for the research topics that will help the students find materials in our library.Again, we give you an open invitation to come and visit any of our libraries. We are very proud of the resourcesand staff that are here to help both students, staff and parents alike. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact one of the libraries. One other reminder is that our children may want to use their KanEd account during the summer months. They will still need their student information to access this at home. I will make sure that there are websitesthat will be bookmarked in the KanEd site that are safe and appropriate for your children. Take time to explorethese sites with your children before school is out and give you the opportunity to still ask questions if youaren’t sure how to use this valuable resource. Contact any of the libraries with questions and we will do ourbest to get the information you need. Have a wonderful summer and READ, READ, READ!Tips for reading to young, school-age childrenYour child has started school, but he still needs you to read to him at home. Your child will do better in school, and you'll enjoy the time spent together. Here are helpful tips for reading to and with young children in school, kindergarten through sixth grade:• Keep reading to your child even when he can read.• Have your child make predictions about what will happen next. Have them tell you about different charactersin the book.• Ask your child whether he/she likes adventure stories, mysteries, science fiction, animal stories, or storiesabout other children. Ask why• Talk with your child about favorite authors and help him find additional books by those authors.• Take turns reading a story with your child. Don't interrupt to correct mistakes that do not change the meaning.• Ask your child to retell the story by giving the beginning, middle, and end of the story to organize thinkingand discussion.• Ask your child to tell why a character might have taken a specific action. Listen to their opinions.• Take turns reading a book with your child.• Enjoy yourself and have fun. The most important thing you can do to help your child become a successfulreader is communicate that reading is valuable and enjoyable. It is critical that your child keeps reading andbeing read to at this age. Young readers need to become practiced at reading, and the only way to get good atit -- is to practice!
