mA Message from the Superintendent
It’s hard to believe we are already well into the year 2010 and
anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring. There are many exciting
events and achievements to celebrate in our excellent school
district.
Mariemont High School is participating in the Battelle for Kids Ohio
Value-Added High Schools initiative to improve college and career
readiness. Of the 43 Ohio high schools involved in this program, our
instructors in Chemistry, English 10 and Algebra II have been recognized
as highly effective teaching teams. This designation puts them
in the top 10 percent of teaching teams in the Ohio Value-Added
High Schools program.
We continue to focus on equipping our students with 21st Century
Skills as we prepare all students to be competitive in our global
economy. There are many exciting initiatives occurring in our
district that allow our teachers to harness the power of technology
to extend and enhance individualized learning activities for all
students.
Our fi ne arts and athletic departments have continued their focus
on providing fabulous learning opportunities for our students while
exciting and entertaining our school community. I would encourage
everyone to attend a sporting event, concert, or art exhibit and
experience the commitment to excellence that is the heart of our
school district.
The Board of Education adopted a comprehensive facilities master
plan in the fall that will shape the future of our district facilities. The
Board has chosen to implement this plan in a single phase to take
advantage of federal stimulus programs, historically low interest
rates, competitive construction prices, and the economy of scale that
is realized from implementing the plan in a single phase. In addition,
the Board has continued to demonstrate a commitment to wise fi scal
management through the implementation of $1,800,000 in permanent
budget reductions between May 2008 and May 2010. The combination
bond issue/operating levy scheduled for the May ballot represents
the most cost effective option for dealing with aging and failing
facilities and maintaining our excellent academic program. Information
regarding the ballot issue and construction timeline may be found
on the school website (www.mariemontschools.org)
Our planning continues with bringing community members, staff
and students together to help defi ne and design the new building
spaces and to plan how to best transition students during construction.
Working with a dedicated group of Fairfax residents, teachers,
students and alumni, we will celebrate and honor Fairfax Elementary
as it closes this June.
We are in the midst of planning historic transitions and exciting longterm
opportunities in the Mariemont Schools. We are committed to
maintaining excellence in serving our students and our community. I
welcome your comments and questions and encourage you to call or
email at your convenience. Happy 2010 and Go Warriors!
Paul W. Imhoff, Superintendent
mA Message from the Board of Education
2010 will be an exciting and historic year for the Mariemont City School District. We are so grateful
to all community and staff members who have joined in the important work of helping to planning
the direction and solutions for our facilities needs. We encourage everyone to get involved.
Call the board offi ce (272-7500) and volunteer your opinions, your time, your help.
In order to implement a responsible solution to our facilities issues and in response to declining
state funding, the Board voted to place a combined bond issue and operating levy on the May 4
ballot. The plans for what comes next are underway, and we need your continuing assistance.
Residents, parents, staff and facilities experts are currently detailing the specifi c building design
and space plans, while another set of teams are planning for a smooth transition for all students
– both out and back into their improved school buildings. This winter and spring, a special task
force of Fairfax community members, alumni, staff and students will focus on properly celebrating
the history of Fairfax Elementary as it closes its doors this June.
We have also experienced transition on the Board of Education itself. Our deepest thanks to
Kevin Grimmer for his leadership and dedication to the students of this district as his board term
ended in December. We know his support and involvement in the district will continue for many
years to come.
The Board started 2010 by welcoming new member Bill Flynn who will be a tremendous asset in
this position. Re-elected members Peggy Braun and Ken White returned for a new term of offi ce.
Also, at the January meeting, Mr. White was elected to serve as president for 2010 with Dee
Walter serving as vice president.
Your Board of Education is passionate about meeting the current and future needs of our students
and the goals of our communities. Our mission continues to be “preparing Scholars of Today to be
the Leaders of Tomorrow”. We welcome your questions and concerns. Our contact information
can be found on the back of this newsletter.
Meet your
newest BOE
member
Bill Flynn
Bill Flynn is a Cincinnati native and has
lived in Williams’ Meadow for 18 years
with his wife Beth and their three
children.
He has served in many capacities
throughout the Mariemont community
and for the school district itself,
including co-chairing the successful
2007 operating levy campaign.
Mr. Flynn has been a private practice
attorney for nearly 25 years and is a
member of the board of directors for
the Cincinnati law fi rm of Strauss & Troy.
m Financial Update
We want every resident of the Mariemont City School district to
be aware and informed of the necessity and of the impact of the
school district’s upcoming fi nancing request. On February 11,
the Mariemont Board of Education voted to place a combination
Bond Issue and Operating Levy on the May 4, 2010 ballot.
Bond Issue: To fi nance new construction and renovations to
school facilities and sites, a 5.28 mill bond issue (collected at a
net increase of 3.6 mills bond rate) repaid over 37 years. This
would fi nance the entire $39,800,000 Board approved Facilities
Master Plan. This issuance will allow the district to take advantage
of historically low interest rates and construction costs and
to attract lower bids with a multiple-site project.
Operating Levy: To fi nance continued operating expenses of the
district, a new continuing operating levy of 5.15 mills.
Cost to Property Owner: These additional monies will be collected
beginning in 2011, with an estimated annual cost of $268
per $100,000 of auditor’s tax valuation for owner-occupied
residential properties.
In order to fi nance the same quality level of education programming
for our students, the district has adopted a three-step
overall plan:
1- Have Reduced Budget by $1.8 million: From May 2008 – May
2010, the district has cut a necessary $1.8 million from our annual
budget in order to avoid falling into defi cit spending.
2- Implement Facilities Master Plan: With the funds from the
proposed Bond Issue, we will be able to implement the boardapproved
Facilities Master Plan that will fully address our facilities
issues while reducing our operating costs by an additional
$1 million dollars.
3- Replace Declining State Funding: As we have reiterated many times
over the last several years, our state funding has continued to decline.
This means that we (along with our peer public school districts) must
seek additional monies from our taxpayers (operating levy) to continue
to operate the district at our current level of instruction and programs for
students.
If the request for this combined bond issue/operating levy is unsuccessful,
the district would be forced to reduce the annual operating budget
by an additional $3 million or more over the next two school years to
continue operations. The impact of these reductions would be signifi -
cant district wide.
For complete information on the combined fi nancing request, the Facilities
Master Plan and budget reduction recommendations if the request
is unsuccessful, please visit www.mariemontschools.org/facilities.
LIfelong Learners - For professional development in 2009-2010, the K-6 focus remains on
extending teachers’ knowledge of best practices for Language arts and Mathematics. Teachers have
attended training in a program called Math Solutions, a course that presents practical and proven
strategies for implementing standards-based instruction. In addition, Mrs. Linda Lee, Terrace Park
principal, and a team of teachers are enrolled in a course entitled Lenses on Learning in which math
instruction is studied by a team of teachers and an administrator.
For training in the Language Arts, teachers have continued to enroll in the summer Literacy Institute
held by the Lakota School District as well as specifi c reading and writing programs. Teachers will also
attend a workshop presented by Lucy Calkins, a well known language arts expert. Special Education
teachers have taken courses in Orton-Gillingham, DIBELS, and Math Solutions.
During semester one, all K-6 content area teachers participated in eight hours of training with Battelle for Kids, focused on curriculum and assessment.
During semester two, the teachers are working in teams to continue to implement what they learned in those sessions.
For 2009-2010, Superintendent Imhoff established an elementary Curriculum Council. Teachers from all three buildings volunteered to serve as grade
level leaders (similar to department heads at the high school) and act as liaisons between the administrators, the curriculum director, and the teachers.
The primary focus for the CC members this year was to plan and implement new grade level projects that incorporated rigorous and relevant research
and information technology skills. The new projects would also include college and career readiness skills that have been identifi ed for students to be
successful in their future endeavors. Members of this year’s Curriculum Council are (as pictured): back: Lauren Wolterman (Spec Ed), Kevin Maness
(1), Ann Muennich (6), Jim Counts (5); front: Mary Sexton (3), Linda Wiley (2), Mary Kay Kroeger (4) and Missy Fields (K).
Reaching Out to Haiti -
Across the area, people have been
reaching out to help those impacted by
the devastating earthquakes in Haiti.
In our schools, students and teachers
organized fundraising efforts - bags and
bags of coins were deposited in jars
by little hands. Combined with parent
donations,the Mariemont City Schools
community relief effort contributed
$7,130.51 to the International Response
Fund of the American Red Cross to help
those in Haiti. Some student groups are
continuing outreach efforts.
The Mariemont Board of Education meets at
7:00 p.m., the third
Tuesday of each month at the
Mariemont Junior High
