LIfelong Learners - For professional development in 2009-2010, the K-6 focus remains on
extending teachers’ knowledge of best practices for Language arts and Mathematics. Teachers have
attended training in a program called Math Solutions, a course that presents practical and proven
strategies for implementing standards-based instruction. In addition, Mrs. Linda Lee, Terrace Park
principal, and a team of teachers are enrolled in a course entitled Lenses on Learning in which math
instruction is studied by a team of teachers and an administrator.
For training in the Language Arts, teachers have continued to enroll in the summer Literacy Institute
held by the Lakota School District as well as specifi c reading and writing programs. Teachers will also
attend a workshop presented by Lucy Calkins, a well known language arts expert. Special Education
teachers have taken courses in Orton-Gillingham, DIBELS, and Math Solutions.
During semester one, all K-6 content area teachers participated in eight hours of training with Battelle for Kids, focused on curriculum and assessment.
During semester two, the teachers are working in teams to continue to implement what they learned in those sessions.
For 2009-2010, Superintendent Imhoff established an elementary Curriculum Council. Teachers from all three buildings volunteered to serve as grade
level leaders (similar to department heads at the high school) and act as liaisons between the administrators, the curriculum director, and the teachers.
The primary focus for the CC members this year was to plan and implement new grade level projects that incorporated rigorous and relevant research
and information technology skills. The new projects would also include college and career readiness skills that have been identifi ed for students to be
successful in their future endeavors. Members of this year’s Curriculum Council are (as pictured): back: Lauren Wolterman (Spec Ed), Kevin Maness
(1), Ann Muennich (6), Jim Counts (5); front: Mary Sexton (3), Linda Wiley (2), Mary Kay Kroeger (4) and Missy Fields (K).
