Katie Landwehr makes Tipp City School’s History!
Congratulations to the women's cross country team. At
the division 2 state meet at Scioto Downs the team
placed 13th. Katie Landwehr made Tipp history; she not
only led the Tipp girls but the whole field by placing 1st
overall in the race, making her the 2010 division 2 State
Champion! She also, once again, broke the school
record (that she set last year at the state meet), running
an 18:05. Claudia Barhorst and Peyton Miller ran
strong, finishing with times of 19:39 and 20:16
respectively. Jessica Bruggeman and Alex Mahan
rounded out the scoring for the Tipp team, running
21:03 and 21:16. Jenna Kremer and Brooke Mosier finished the race hand in hand, capping off a
stellar season.
Congratulations to Sam Wharton. At the division 2 state meet Sam placed 8th overall, making the podium
for the first time. Sam ran a 4:33 first mile, 10:15 at the 2nd mile, and finished with a 16:03.
Broadway Elementary School’s Character Club goes to Columbus!
The Character Club was chosen to have a booth on display at the Ohio
School Boards Association Capital Conference this past week explaining the
club. Broadway Elementary’s Character Club has been in existence for about
6 years and is a unique way of teaching students to respect themselves and
others. The themes used each week cover topics such as respect, making
good choices and being courteous. Through songs, books and videos,
students are taught how to manage aggressive behaviours, develop empathy
for others and strengthen core values. By meeting twice monthly and
introducing new traits each time, students are encouraged to take active roles
in making the school and community a great place to work, learn and play.
Nevin Coppock Elementary Lock Down
Our building principals and their staffs prepare our students for all sorts of emergencies
(fire, tornados, safety) throughout the school year. Every school in Ohio is required to
conduct a “Lockdown Drill” prior to December 1 of each school year. Each of the Tipp
City schools either has conducted or is preparing to conduct such a drill. The purpose of
the drill is to protect our students and staff from an outside or inside threat to their safety.
Nevin Coppock Elementary School conducted their drill on Wednesday, November 3
under the supervision of Mr. Brownlee and Officer Dan Rittenhouse of the Tipp City
Police Department.
Broadway Elementary Students Mine for Gemstones
“The Rock Man” came to Broadway Elementary and did a little “show and tell” with an
explanation of the basics of mineralogy, paleontology, rock collecting and gold panning.
The students were then allowed to act like miners and did some gem screening. They
poured individual bags of sand into a screen to look for various gemstones and fossils.
Swing Your Partner Round and Round…
A group of L.T. Ball students
were selected as “super square
dancers” to entertain the
residents at Spring Meade. The
trip was a L.T. Ball service trip.
A swingin’ time was had by
all! The residents really enjoy
the kids and it’s a good service
project for the students.
L.T. Ball 5 th Grade Science Fair
Last week L.T. Ball 5 th graders put on their annual Science Fair. The Science Gallery
is for 5th grade students only and it is the first year that they display the scientific
method via an experiment and poster/presentation. Students must choose an
experiment that applies their knowledge of the scientific method and must be
conscientious of variables, hypotheses, control groups, and able to draw conclusions
using their analysis.
The L.T. Ball Fifth Graders gathered at the Veteran’s Memorial
Thursday, November 11, the L.T. Ball fifth graders
met at the Veteran’s Memorial in Tipp City, at the
corner of Hyatt and Main Street, for a moving
Veteran’s Day program that caught the attention of
the local media. After the Pledge of Allegiance,
Gretchen Riggle did a speech on the origins of
Veteran’s Day. The fifth graders also did a choral
reading, Ron Re and Jack Evans spoke, there was a
wreath ceremony, the singing of God Bless
America, closing remarks by Mrs. Patterson and
the traditional playing of TAPS.
Nevin Coppock Elementary Students are Thankful for Veterans!
Nevin Coppock students made a whole
wall in honor of veterans. Students filled
out a paper to recognize a family member
who has served or is serving in the military.
3rd graders helped put them all together.
The student council performed a readers
theater skit to teach about Veteran’s Day
for all of the classes.
The Ohio Department of Education congratulated the Tipp
City School District this week, for meeting all the Annual
Measurable Achievement Objectives for Limited English
Proficient (LEP) students for the school year 2009-2010.
Race to the Top
Tipp City School’s Transformation Team submitted the Scope of Work for Ohio’s Race to the Top
strategy by the deadline of October 22 nd . A team of 52 ODE staff spent many intense hours reviewing all
of the 528 Scopes of Work that were submitted. Each review resulted in an overall designation of
Approve, Approved with Conditions, or Returned for Revision. In total, 6 were Approved, 98 were
Approved with Conditions, and 396 were Returned for Revision. Twenty-eight Local Education Agencies did not
submit a Scope of Work and provided a formal notice to withdraw from Race to the Top participation.
Tipp City School’s was one of the 396 school district’s that was Returned for Revision. Those revisions are being
made and will be submitted by the November 12 th deadline.
Tipp City School’s was awarded the minimum of $25,000 a year for four years, totaling $100,000. Deborah S.
Delisle, Superintendent of Public Instruction had stated earlier that if any of the school’s withdrew from the Race
to the Top participation their money would be distributed among the other participating school districts.
