Monasteries count among the oldest guesthouses 

in Europe. Hospitality is still of major 

importance in the 3rd millennium. Many 

communities offer seminar centres, monastic life or various 

accommodation in adjoining retreats and houses. You are 

welcome to join in the life of each community, deepen your 

spirituality, boost your health or simply relax and unwind. 

Thanks to the cooperation between Canisiuswerk (the 

Austrian centre for vocations ministry) and Klösterreich 

(an association to promote the monasteries in Austria and 

abroad), this new brochure is now available as a guidebook 

for you. Submerse yourself in the world of religious orders, 

enjoy the spiritual life and our offers for tourism. Please 

bear in mind to check with the respective contact person as 

to whether your expectations of staying in a monastery or a 

convent fit with what these monasteries can offer you.

What we offer 

Praying the Hours 

Already in the creation story time measured in 

days is the time of God, of His doing and His 

rest. Prayer is the answer to the doings of God, 

to everything He does for His people. When prayer is 

structured according to times of the day, it helps to 

structure the thoughts of mankind. Following the example 

of Jesus, the first Christians traditionally used to pray 

together or by themselves during certain times of the 

day. Out of this, a rule evolved that especially priests and 

religious observe today. 

Psalms are a way to express the love, the joy, the pain 

and the gratitude of all people and all generations. Hymns 

and readings from the Holy Bible are other parts of this 

rhythmical prayers. 

Communities and abbeys in this brochure offering the 

note “Praying the Hours” welcome guests to join them 

in prayer, either actively or passively. Some orders prefer 

to pray in Latin. Many nuns and monks of the Klösterreich 

community offer prayers “In the Middle of the Day” 

at 12.00 p.m. during the summer months. You are best 

advised to address each abbey for further details and 

modalities.

What we offer 

Participation 

Everyday life can be demanding, full of stress or a 

period of mourning – sometimes, each one of us 

simple wants to relax, refresh and retreat. 

Religious communities, either sisters or brothers and their 

houses and institutes are a well-known source of renewing 

peace and finding new energy. Monasteries welcoming 

“participants” are happy for you to join in your prayer, their 

regular chores or other tasks that are explained to you before 

your visit. Please expect to find a rather simplistic way 

of life suited to the particularities of each religious order. 

Monastic life / 

Religious life 

Staying in a monastery is equal to spiritual renewal. 

It is a stark contrast to the life you normally live and 

gives wings to your soul. However, a monastery is no 

comfy retreat, but is about working on yourself and assisting 

others. Religious communities, either sisters or brothers, 

follow a set of goals that they would like to achieve. When 

staying with a congregation, you are welcome to experience 

this way of life, which varies from place to place.

Spiritual 

accompaniment 

Spiritual accompaniment means being guided on 

your very own way in life. It is not a psychological or 

other form of therapeutic counselling, the burden of 

making your own decisions will not be taken from you, but 

a means of talking to someone who really listens. This may 

be about questions relating to everyday life, the relationship 

with God and spirituality. Your “advisor” is there to assist 

you with his experience, his reflections and his thoughts. 

You decide what you would like to share and when. 

At the beginning, expectations are clarified against the 

background of experience of each monastery or community. 

There is something like the right “chemistry” that exists 

between visitor and host. You should feel totally free to talk, 

as the accompanist is free to accept you to be accompanied. 

Spiritual accompaniment is normally provided through 

talks of one hour or more in a monthly rhythm. Dates are 

set in advance; each party is free to end these talks again. In 

any case after one year a new agreement should be arranged. 

When you stay with a certain community, you should fix 

times and dates for maximum benefits of professional, 

spiritual guidance. Daily talks are offered on retreats as well.

Spiritual accompaniment helps 

• to identify my view of God and to discover the 

talents He has given me 

• to investigate into the relationship between God 

and me 

• to structure my prayers 

• to cherish the Bible as a source of life, my life, and to 

live everyday life accordingly 

• to be asked by Jesus:“What do you want me to do to 

you?” (Lk 18,41) and “Who am I to you?” (Mt 16,15) 

• to reflect on the spiritual side of things 

• to find my place as a Christian 

• to live my life according to my Christian faith.

Holidays 

You can stay in certain communities without 

having to take part in various courses and 

programmes. Apart from fixed meal-times, 

you can create your own daily routine, go and visit the 

surrounding area or retreat to your room etc. Please go

monasteries and specific cultural events, attractions and 

gardens. Health specialists offer days or weeks of fasting. 

Each retreat or community offers different standards of 

living. Please contact the respective person in advance, 

especially if you travel with specific needs.

workshops or offer to host external events.

The abbey of Cistercian nuns 

Mariastern-Gwiggen is located in 

Vorarlberg, at the foot of the 

Pfänder mountain, about 10km from both 

Lindau and Bregenz. It offers a magnificent 

location – with a view of Lake Constance as 

well as the Swiss mountains – to our home as 

a community of 22 Cistercian-Benedictine 

nuns. Our first responsibility is to praise 

God, either on our own or supporting others 

on their way to find God. 

We like to invite people to come to us, to 

retreat into silence, to go on a holiday or 

make use of the many offers we have here at

This Institute of formation run by the 

sisters „Barmherzige Schwestern“. 

Marillac house offers overnight 

possibilities for 44 people including 28 rooms 

(single rooms and two-bed rooms), all of them 

including shower and toilet. 

Thanks to the good location of our house 

(quiet yet easy to reach), many people come 

here either on their own or as a group looking 

for retreats and the possibility to enjoy nature 

and culture. 

At Marillac, visitors can enjoy a beautiful, 

recently renovated chapel as well as a 

meditation room. We are also close to the 

walking trail along the Inn.

words of the Holy Bible, God enters our

Contribute to a successful life of young 

people! Baumkirchen, about 12 km 

east of Innsbruck, is located in one of 

the sunniest and historical parts of Tyrol. 

Christoph Bernhard, Duke of Galen, and his 

wife Marie Therese, Duchess of Seilern and 

Aspang, had the desire to put their estate 

„Wohlgemutsheim“ in the hands of a religious 

community. The castle they offered to our 

community also includes an adjoining chapel 

from the 16th century. It is now more than 50 

years (1959) that the Sisters of Don Bosco run 

a retreat and youth centre here. Today, the 

estate is dedicated to fulfilling the following 

missions: 

• Education and care of children: through 

the Don Bosco kindergarten, afternoon 

programmes, school trips and excursions 

• Families: education and training for families, 

spiritual support, recreation 

• Vocational training and advice: Supporting 

young people in finding their way into life 

and adulthood (more details on request)

Fiecht Abbey 

Embedded in the gently rolling hills and 

close to the mountains of Tyrol, the 

Benedictine abbey is about 25 km from 

the capital city Innsbruck. Over 1000 years ago, 

Rathold von Aibling had the first monastic 

building erected near the Georgen mountain. 

In 1138, the community was raised to the status 

of a Benedictine abbey. After the last fire in 

1705, the monks decided to move their abbey 

down into the Inn valley below the original 

mountain abbey. Today, the building with its 

magnificent abbey church is one of the most 

valued cultural treasures of Tyrol. The abbey 

also runs an institute with a religious course 

program. All the information concerning rooms, 

availability, courses etc. can be found online or 

by contacting Father Rathold Kleinloh OSB.

We, the Sisters of Saint Vincent Paul, 

are living in Innsbruck focusing on 

contemplation, spirituality and fomation. Our 

house is surrounded by beautiful mountains 

and close to lake Achen, with countless 

possibilities to enjoy hiking, recreation and 

the pursuit of spirituality. 

You are welcome to take part in our 

religious daily life and share a talk with our 

pastor. 

We would like you to feel comfortable and

to meet the challenges of everyday life. 

A good way to reach us is by using public 

transport ( Jenbach station); a visitor pass lets 

you use the local buses in the entire Achen

The house is located at the outskirts 

of the town Kufstein in Tyrol, only 

10 minutes walk from the station. 

Our retreat offers 21 single and 4 double 

rooms with shared bathroom facilities. For 

those wishing to stay for holidays, the house 

is available for you only during the months 

of July and August. Full board possible. 

Leisure possibilities include hiking tours up 

into the mountains and to see some natural 

lakes, the Tyrolean Festival in Erl as well as 

different activities in and around Kufstein. 

We offer you a cosy lounge with a library 

and a television, a seminar room including 

common facilities, and a children’s 

playground. In addition, we also organise 

various courses. 

We are a missionary home with a 

community of sisters an brothers. There is 

a pilgrimage church, a chapel, a room for 

meditation and prayers, the opportunitiy to 

follow the day’s prayers, and for counselling 

with the local sisters or brothers.

Our retreat and international centre 

for Precious-Blood-Spirituality is 

located in one of the largest 

private gardens of Salzburg, ideally suited

Rein Abbey 

The Cistercian abbey Rein (Latin: 

runa) has been founded in 1129 as 

the 38th abbey of its religious order. 

However, as the other 37 abbeys before have 

faded over the course of history, Rein is the 

oldest and continuously active Cistercian 

abbey worldwide. It was granted to a 

community of Cistercian monks by Duke 

Leopold I von Steyer during the times of 

Saint Bernhard. Rein is located 15 km north 

of Graz. The first monks to arrive came from 

Ebrach in the Franken country. Recent renovations 

brought to light interesting finds 

from the Gothic and Roman ages. 

Our guests live, pray and eat with our 

monks. They decide for themselves what else 

they would like to share. Some prefer to take 

a lonesome walk, whereas others are happy 

for the company of one of our monks. 

Everybody estimates the peace and quiet 

in this valley besides the Mur river.

mountains, our abbey St Lambrecht 

is located right at the heart of the 

nature park Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen on an 

altitude of 1072 m above sea-level. Ever since 

the time of its foundation, monks used to 

live here almost permanently, having only 

to resign between 1786 and 1802 and from 

1938 to 1946 during the times of the Second 

World War. 

The abbey’s main task is to run the nine 

parishes in the surroundings, the abbey itself

pilgrimage destination Mariazell. We are

Surrounded by the gently rolling hills 

of the Mühlviertel district, right at 

the border of the Bohemian forests, 

the Premonstratensian canons continue to 

live and work for well over 800 years now. 

A lot of effort was needed to establish the 

abbey as a spiritual, cultural and economic 

centre of the upper Mühlviertel district. 

40 canons living at the abbey take care 

of 24 different parishes. There are many 

religious celebrations held together. Life 

follows the rule of Saint Augustine and

It is located right next to Grein, close to 

the Danube river and very quiet. Our 

small community is dedicated to marching the 

„pilgrim’s route to faith“ together with its visitors:

We are happy to receive single travellers as 

well as groups. Days of silence or weekends are 

organised on request (with or without overnight 

accommodation). We want both men and women 

to enjoy our offer, our retreats or longer periods

Benedictine proverb at our gate, 

expressing our hospitality. The 

abbey was founded back in the year 777 by the 

Duke of Bavaria Tassilo III. Ever since, many 

people have lived and met here. Kremsmünster 

is an abbey run by 58 monks who are missionaries

house of the Franciscan sisters offers

Missionary Abbey 

Built on the foundation of an old Franciscan 

monastery, the Austrian headquarters 

of the Steyl missionary sisters have been 

founded back in 1912. It is almost 100 years now 

that the first missionary sisters arrived from 

Steyl in the Netherlands, the „cradle of missionary 

work“, and settled in Stockerau. Out of this 

place, more than 300 missionaries have been sent 

all over the world. Today, Steyl missionary sisters 

work in more than 40 countries on all continents 

of the world. In Austria, the focus of attention is 

on health care, school education, spiritual 

accompaniment and organising retreats and 

missionary courses. 

Saint Koloman is also used as a meeting 

place for local groups from the Weinviertel 

district. Saint Koloman is the city patron of 

Stockerau. He arrived here in the 11th 

century AD and unfortunately died as a 

martyr falsely accused of being a spy.

„The door is open, but even more so 

our heart!“ The abbey of Geras can 

look back on many years of eventful history. 

Monastic life continues to be influenced by 

the local community known as the Premonstratensian. 

Surrounded by the ponds and 

lakes of Geras, it is a true regional monument. 

The abbey of Geras as well as the former 

abbey of Pernegg are places to retreat and to 

meditate. Pernegg is now a renowned health 

centre offering seminar facilities, too. The 

abbey of Geras is an active monastery inviting 

its visitors to Praying the Hours. The Byzantine 

chapel is a special building for meditation. 

Since March 2010, the abbey also runs a 

guesthouse. 12 rooms with 19 beds are 

available for individual or seminar travellers, 

including a seminar room. The abbot Michael 

and Prior Benedict warmly welcome you to 

Geras.

Abbey 

The abbey of Heiligenkreuz in the 

Vienna forests is a „powerful place“ 

(Pope Benedikt XVI), a living 

community of around 81 Cistercian monks 

including a papal high school, 21 parishes, 

the Leopoldinum, a foundation project in 

Sri Lanka, and many more. Heiligenkreuz 

Abbey was founded in 1133 by Saint 

Leopold following the advice of his son, 

Otto of Freising the Blessed. 

Heiligenkreuz continues to exist ever since 

that date, well over 876 years by now. It is the 

second oldest Cistercian abbey in the world. 

Locally, the abbey provides the spiritual heart 

of the Vienna forests: a striking balance 

between culture and nature, the Middle 

Ages and the Baroque times, history and 

spirituality. Our motto is: „Patent portae 

magis cor! Our doors are open, but even 

more so our hearts!“

Lilienfeld Abbey 

The abbey of Cistercian monks is 

located in the Traisen valley, in the 

alpine highlands of Lower Austria. 

It provides the largest medieval monastery 

building of Austria and was founded by Duke 

Leopold VI in 1202. The monks of the abbey 

are largely dedicated to daily prayers, taking 

care of the parishes of the neighbourhoods, 

guests and visitors, teaching as well as 

administrative tasks. 

We are happy to receive visitors looking 

for peace and enjoying the atmosphere of a 

monastery. Our guests are accomodated in the 

visitors’ wing of the building, with free access 

to the medieval part of the building. It is a 

delight to us when visitors join our monks in 

prayer.

Seitenstetten Abbey 

Embedded in the gently rolling hills 

of the green Mostviertel district, our 

abbey was founded in the early 12th 

century. Because of the distinct quadrangular 

farms in the surroundings, the building was 

referred to as the „quadrangle court of God“. 

Seitenstetten welcomes its visitors with a rich 

history and cultural tradition, which you can 

experience through personalised church tours, 

a visit to the knights’ chapel, the abbot staircase 

as well as the festival halls. Truly remarkable is 

the library of the abbey, which is a harmonious 

masterpiece. The gallery, with more than 1.000 

exhibits, covers many different periods in art 

history. 

Embedded in the daily rhythm of the 

praying monks, you will discover the peace 

as a soothing power inside the building. 21 

guest rooms are designed to provide you with

Zwettl Abbey 

Cistercian monks live and pray at the 

abbey since 1138. Today, the focus is on 

spiritual formation. The abbey runs an 

educational institute, a boys’ choir, a private 

vocational school and is constantly working 

on its offers for tourism. Its material wealth is 

largely built upon forestry and fishing rights. 

Nearly untouched landscapes surround the 

abbey in the Waldviertel district – a sparsely 

populated area in the Northwest of Lower 

Austria. People looking for peace and 

recreation will find ideal conditions here. 

The medieval building structure is largely 

intact and open for visitors thanks to guided 

tours. Thanks to the Roman-Gothic style 

cloister as well as the capital hall, visitors feel 

like a part of Monastic life for the last 850 

years. The abbey church is the spiritual centre 

of the building complex, temporarily closed due 

to renovation works. 

During times of church renovation, the 

library is open for visitors. Wide parklands 

recently re-established are a source of 

happiness and life.

„Of Christian Love“ 

We Franciscan Sisters „Of 

Christian Love“ also known as 

the Hartmann sisters, have been 

founded as a spiritual community by young 

women in Vienna back in 1857. Our religious 

order is part of the Assisi family. The name „of 

Christian Love“ is taken from the word of Jesus, 

„What thou have done to one of my brothers, 

thou have done to me“ (Mt 25,40). 

Today, we still live according to this faith 

supported by others living at the monastery. Our 

principal chores include: Nursing and health 

care, looking after the elderly, parish services, 

providing space for inner peace and recreation. 

The founding house, including a hospital of 

our religious order, is located in Hartmanngasse 

7, 1050 Vienna. Other affiliate estates exist in 

Vienna, Lower Austria, Rome, Argentina and 

Paraguay. 

Among us, our Sister Maria Restituta Kafka 

has been blessed by Pope John Paul II on June 21 

in 1998 at the Wiener Heldenplatz square. She is 

the first martyr of the archdiocese in Vienna.

Living in a community of sisters: 

KANA are five sisters supporting 

each other in life and faith. They are 

happy to include you! 

We welcome you to join us – by arrangement 

for three days – as women looking for 

religious orientation and to find their way 

in life. 

You can take part in the prayers (morning, 

mass, midday, evening) and the communal life 

of our sisters. 

The convent is located in the adjoining 

estate, in the sixth district of the inner city 

of Vienna, close to the railway station 

„Westbahnhof “. Four functional single rooms 

are provided; no use for tourism.

Our house „Cardinal König“ is a 

friendly place to meet people in the 

southwest of Vienna. We focus on 

spirituality – formation – exchange. 

Our institute is run by a small community 

of Jesuits. We do not follow a rigid, monastic 

life with fixed times of prayer. Rather, we focus 

on various forms of retreats, enabling people to 

come to terms with their own lives, with God 

and with making decisions for themselves. 

It is a place right in town, to retreat and 

to gain new forces even if there is no specific 

course. We like to see our mission as improving 

the relationships between people and 

between people and God. A place answering 

our modern desire for a simple life, for depth 

and clarity, spirituality and home.

Schönstatt centre 

The educational institute „Schönstatt 

am Kahlenberg“ is ideally suited to 

combine your holiday or your business 

seminar in Vienna with a relaxing stay in the 

green belt of the Vienna forests. The estate is 

run by the Schönstätter Sisters of Mary. The 

Austrian Schönstatt-movement has its main 

quarters there. 

Today, the Schönstatt centre is open all 

year round including seminar and conference 

facilities, full board kitchen service, a cafeteria, 

a library and a shop, children’s playground as 

well as 20 double rooms with shared facilities, 

two double rooms with basin and toilet, and a 

five-bed dorm with shower and toilet (single 

occupation possible including a surcharge). 

It is only a few minutes’ walk in order to 

reach the lookout point at the Kahlenberg hill 

as well as the wine tastings at the Heurigen in 

Grinzing. The bus stop „Sulzwiese“ (38A) is 

right in front of the building. Our guests are 

welcome to join in the prayers of our sisters as 

well as the courses offered by the Schönstatt 

centre.

Burgenland 

Marienkron Abbey 

Marienkron Abbey was founded in 

1955 as a place of prayer close to the 

then-existing Iron Curtain. In 1969 

the nuns opened a health spa. Dedicated to the 

spiritual and physical well-being of each guest 

as written in the rule of Saint Benedict, they 

set to take care of each patient with the cures 

devised by Sebastian Kneipp, a 19th century 

parish priest famous for his ingenious water 

treatments. Today, both of them, Benedict and 

Kneipp, are the patrons of the health spa, 

creating a place for meditation as well as a 

retreat centre for spiritual and physical health. 

The daily programme is such that guests 

are able to join the prayers of the nuns. 

Guests can experience life at the abbey, 

Spiritual accompaniment (after pre-arrangement), 

evening highlights as well as courses 

enhanced by spirituality. Leave everyday life 

behind and become part of an atmosphere 

that seeks to combine the harmony of an abbey 

with a health spa. Everything is prepared 

to create a perfect union between body, mind 

and soul.

Raigern Abbey 

Raigern was founded in the middle of 

the 11th century by the Duke of 

Bretislav. In the course of the 13th 

century, it lost its independence. It was not 

until the year 1812 that the Prior Gregor 

Sázavský applied to the Emperor Franz Josef I 

for raising the monastery back to the status of 

an independent abbey. On March 22, 1813, the 

abbey of Bevnov became independent again. 

In 1950, all buildings had been seized and 

turned into a military depot for almost 40 

years, badly damaging the original structures. 

At the same time the abbey was founded, 

a library was created now comprising almost 

66.000 books. After the year 1950, the library 

was taken care of by the Moravian state 

library in Brno, who managed to protect it 

from the ravages of the army. Today, the 

library is run by the Brno district museum 

and open to visitors in the course of guided 

tours. Five Benedictine monks continue to live 

at the abbey today, who are happy to guide 

visitors.

Poland 

Tyniec Abbey 

Situated on a picturesque chalk rock and 

founded back in the 11th century as the 

first abbey in Poland, Tyniec has always 

been a thriving hub of spirituality and culture 

in Poland. 

At the moment, the community of monks 

counts 40 people living according to the rule 

of Saint Benedict. The gates are open for all 

those looking for comfort and spirituality. 

Since 2008, the Benedictine institute offers 

a wide range of retreats, workshops and adult 

education courses closely tied to the cultural 

and spiritual heritage of the abbey. There is 

also a selection of comfortable rooms at our 

new guesthouse. All visitors are welcome to 

share the daily prayers of our monks. Various 

concerts and exhibitions, like for instance the 

Benedictine music summer, are organised too.

we can highly recommend to you!

Zirc Abbey 

The Cistercian abbey of Zirc has been 

founded in 1182 by King Bela III. On 

his request, monks from the Clairvaux/Burgundy 

district settled at the abbey in 

the Bakony forests. During the course of the 

16th and 17th centuries, the flourishing religious 

and cultural centre was gradually destroyed. 

A community of Cistercian monks from the 

area of Heinrichau/Silesia in Germany started 

rebuilding the abbey in 1699 in Baroque style, 

which had had a lasting effect on the surroundings 

of Zirc. In 1982, the church was raised to 

the status of Basilica minor by Pope Johannes 

Paul II. 

Throughout its changing course of history, 

the abbey of Zirc has remained faithful to its 

core mission as a spiritual regional centre. 

Locals have had the continuous benefit of 

Spiritual accompaniment and the deep rooting 

of their faith in the abbey; visitors on the main 

road 82 Györ-Pannonhalma-Zirc-Veszprém- 

Balaton are welcome to stop at the abbey as a 

place for spiritual rest, peace and insight into 

the history of God and His people.
