Upper Austria
Schlägl Abbey
Surrounded by the gently rolling hills
of the Mühlviertel district, right at
the border of the Bohemian forests,
the Premonstratensian canons continue to
live and work for well over 800 years now.
A lot of effort was needed to establish the
abbey as a spiritual, cultural and economic
centre of the upper Mühlviertel district.
40 canons living at the abbey take care
of 24 different parishes. There are many
religious celebrations held together. Life
follows the rule of Saint Augustine and
the spirit of Saint Norbert, founder of the
Premonstratensian religious order.
Apart from that, the abbey itself is
an important economic hub for the area.
“Schlägl beer” is known well across the
borders.
