EXClUSIVE
My English
favourites
by peter alliss
It was Henry
longhurst who
first said golf
does take us
to so many
beautiful places;
bearing that in mind it’s hard to
pick out just a few but these
have particular memories for
me. Ferndown, north of
Bournemouth, was where my
father was a professional for
many years and I learnt my
trade. It has heather, pine,
silver birch, plenty of gorse, my
favourite terrain.
Royal Birkdale is one of my
favourite championship
courses; majestic sand dunes,
a fascinating course ever
changing direction, an inviting
clubhouse with friendly
members. In 1954 I had a
chance to win the open there...
My father was invited to be
the pro at Sunningdale after
World War II but was settled at
Ferndown. It’s delightful, elitist
and has excellent catering
facilities. It’s best to book a taxi
home after a splendid lunch.
Finally, old Thorns. Since I
was involved with the creation
of golf there, I have been
amazed at its development
from a private membership,
instigated by Ken Wood, the
electrical genius, to the
magical creation we see today,
one of the best overall facilities
in Britain. The course although
in a small area, is exciting,
interesting and a challenge for
all levels of golfers. I am very
proud to have been associated
with its growth. You should go
and see for yourself.
• Peter Alliss was a Ryder Cup
player, is regarded as the
‘Voice of golf’ and is also a
respected course designer.
