We’ve expanded this list by 100 per cent… yet there are still fine courses outside it.
Here are 100 super venues, with comments on those that were Top 100 contenders.
alnmouth, northumberland
Bamburgh Castle, northumberland
a quirky course built close by to the sea
but not a links course other than a few
early holes. With spectacular views of
Bamburgh Castle and Budle Bay, few golf
courses can rival it for location. The golf
course is short with six par 3s.

Bradford (Hawksworth), Yorkshire
Brampton, Cumbria
Brancepeth Castle, durham
This is a gem of a Harry Colt course. a well
thought out bunker replacement and
refurbishment scheme over the last few
years has re-instated the challenge. The
9th and 10th are stunning back to back
par 3s with the magnificent Brancepeth
Castle providing a stunning backdrop.
Brocket Hall (Melbourne), Hertfordshire
Brokenhurst Manor, Hampshire
designed by Harry Colt in the new Forest
it is short but delightful.
Bude & north Cornwall, Cornwall
Carlisle, Cumbria
Cavendish, derbyshire
Clevedon, Somerset
Cleveland, Yorkshire
Clitheroe, lancashire
Cooden Beach, Sussex
an absolute gem and one of the few
downland courses in Britain.
Copt Heath, Warwickshire
Coventry Finham, Warwickshire.
a top-class layout and the one-time home
to the piccadilly Medal matchplay
tournament in the 1970s.
Coxmoor, nottinghamshire
Crosland Heath, Yorkshire
dartmouth (Championship) , devon
It was an astonishing feat to build such a
fine course on this steeply sloped site. The
curving 4th, with out of bounds all the
way up the right and a stream along the
left, is one of the UK’s top par 5s.
diss, norfolk
dunham Forest, Cheshire
a very, very good tree-lined course with
wonderful greens.
East devon, devon
excellent views along the Jurassic coast
from the bracing clifs above Budleigh
Salterton.
East dorset, dorset
East Sussex national (East), Sussex
With a finish designed for tournament
play and some great par 5s, it has more
subtlety than appears on first playing.
East Sussex national (West), Sussex
Both courses are top 100 quality, but we
slightly prefer the West, which is high
calibre. a superb collection of par 5s with
the double-dog-leg 12th demanding a
stream to be crossed and a lake avoided.
Edgbaston, Birmingham
Enville (Highgate), Stafordshire
Combines a mixture of heathland and
parkland and was a very real contender
for the main Top 100 list.
Felixstowe Ferry, Sufolk
Underrated ‘linksy’ course which is
extremely difficult when the wind blows –
lovely surroundings and views.
Forest of arden, Warwickshire
Forest pines, lincolnshire
Formby ladies, lancashire
Royal Cromer ’s seaside
location offers stunning views.
