Please choose TWO works from the list below to read over the summer. The works marked<br />

with an *asterix can be checked out from ASD for the summer.<br />

IMPORTANT: Please email the HS Librarian, Ms. Kathy Patterson, before June 1 to let her<br />

know if you would like to borrow any of these books for the summer. She will check them<br />

out for you <strong>and</strong> you should see her to collect them from her office on either June 9 or June<br />

Assignment: Read <strong>and</strong> annotate TWO, write about ONE.<br />

For each novel, you are required to document your active reading <strong>and</strong> show personal engagement with<br />

the text. If the book belongs to you, please annotate in the text while reading. If it belongs to the<br />

school, take notes <strong>and</strong> annotate using Post‐its or separate pieces of paper.<br />

After reading, choose ONE to write about. Reflect on your notes <strong>and</strong> write a TWO PAGE (typed, double<br />

spaced, Times New Roman, 12 font, using MLA format) reaction/reflection about your novel:<br />

identify aspects of the writer’s language or craft that you found interesting or effective<br />

gather key quotations that reveal important information or shape meaningful impressions about<br />

the characters or events<br />

note questions, impressions <strong>and</strong> ideas you have while reading<br />

comment on the setting <strong>and</strong> time period of the novel<br />

make text‐to‐text connections: does this story remind you of any others you have read?<br />

make text‐to‐self connections: how does the story being told relate to your own experiences?<br />

Both annotations <strong>and</strong> reflection will be collected during the first class<br />

Be prepared to discuss your summer reading in class<br />
