a different professional path: Kevin is
CURRICULUM INFUSES PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
INTO CLASSROOM LEARNING, OFFERING OUR
GRADUATES THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE LEGAL
EDUCATION AVAILABLE IN THE COUNTRY.
About Kevin
Now a tax attorney with Pricewaterhouse
Coopers, Kevin was so impressed with the
real-world experience he received at Touro
Law that he convinced sisters Alyssa and
Stefanie to transfer here.
The nation’s only law school located adjacent to and working with both Federal and State courthouses,
Touro’s unique location provides ample opportunity for students to experience the real world of law.
Just as importantly, Touro Law students make real, lifelong connections with potential employers,
colleagues and clients, according to Kevin.
Alyssa Guarino. The Elder Law Clinic solidified
transfer student Alyssa’s decision to join an elder
law, trusts and estates practice when she graduates
in 2013. Working with VITA (Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance) and a summer internship, arranged with
assistance from the law school’s Office of Career
Services, have enabled her to further sharpen her skills
and boost her career potential.
Clinics
An integral part of the educational process at Touro Law Center, clinics give students
an opportunity to represent actual clients. Under the close supervision of faculty,
clinic students advise clients and appear on their behalf in court or at administrative
hearings. In addition to valuable first-hand experience, clinics help students sharpen
essential professional skills such as interviewing, drafting legal documents, and
investigating and developing evidence.
Externships
Through Touro Law Center’s externship program, students have the opportunity to
work in specific fields of law. They gain exposure to highly technical legal skills,
experience courtroom practice, or perform legal work that calls for unique talent
or knowledge. The program enables students to explore diverse areas of practice.
Externships can include placements in business, law and technology as well as civil
practice, criminal law, Judicial Clerkships, and assignments with the United States
Attorney’s Office.
Stefanie Guarino. Touro Law’s Criminal Procedure
course was an “eye-opening” experience for Stefanie,
who transferred to Touro Law Center in Spring 2012.
Taught by Adjunct Professor Mark Cohen, who is a
sitting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court,
Suffolk County, the complexity of the cases presented
engaged Stefanie, who now plans to pursue a career in
criminal law upon her graduation in 2013.
SINCE OUR FOUNDING IN 1980, TOURO LAW CENTER HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO PROVIDING
A QUALITY LEGAL EDUCATION THAT ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO EXAMINE THE MORAL
GOALS OF THE LAW WHILE PROMOTING SOCIAL JUSTICE AND COMMUNITY SERVICE.
Touro Law stands strong as a leader in promoting the moral and ethical responsibilities of our
profession. From providing community legal services to our unique Public Advocacy Center, our
commitment to social justice never waivers.
Public Service Fellowships
Touro Law’s fellowship programs provide a stipend
for students who share a commitment to public
interest law and wish to pursue this worthwhile
endeavor throughout the country. Students work with
an attorney who is engaged in poverty law, civil rights
law or public rights law.
Public Advocacy Center
Touro Law is home to the William Randolph Hearst Public
Advocacy Center (PAC). The only one of its kind in the
nation, the Center was developed to have an impact on
social justice, legal training and the lives of countless
individuals in and beyond the local community.
Housed within the law school, the PAC provides furnished
offices to local non-profit agencies free of charge, in
exchange for a promise to utilize Touro Law students for
advocacy services, research work and client relations.
Students work with these organizations to satisfy their
pro bono requirements while developing an understanding
of the problems facing the local community.
Pro Bono Graduation Requirement
Touro Law Center was among the first law schools in the
nation to create a pro bono requirement for graduation.
To satisfy the requirement, students may choose
to complete 40 hours of unsalaried legal work that
addresses the legal needs of the financially challenged
or other traditionally underrepresented groups. Students
work in settings such as a legal aid office, advocacy
group for battered spouses, or with a public interest
organization. Students also may choose to satisfy this
requirement by successfully completing a qualifying
clinic or public interest course.

A part-time student, Maurice made the
Touro a “beacon in the community” and
Thomas Maligno, Executive Director of
the Public Advocacy Center and Director
