DUCKS
It was such a shame that we had to postpone the Year 1 and 2 Sports
Day on Tuesday morning due to the rain which made the grass too
slippery. A child from Year 2 suggested that if they all promised not
to fall over we could still go ahead! We have now rescheduled it for
this coming Tuesday, 22nd May at 9.00am on the field in front of the
Senior School building. Let’s hope the sun shines!!
Walkathon
Thank-you to everyone who took part in the Annual DUCKS
Walkathon for Heart to Heart. The money raised will be sent to Ms.
Christine Cullen at Heart to Heart for helping a child have their heart
mended so that they can walk to school. Thank-you to Mr. Hughes
for arranging this event.
We Share and We Care
As many of you would know, one of the points in our DUCKS
Philosophy and Objectives is to share and care. This week, I saw a
wonderful example of this when I heard that Gareth and Benedict
Junior
SCHOOL
This week got off to an absolutely superb start with an assembly in which
many certificates were given out. Thanks were given to the FOBISSEA
reserves who have shown commitment in their efforts despite knowing
that they would only get to go if another team member was injured. We
are all very proud of them. We also congratulated three students on their
ABRSM theory results: Andrew Gan (Grade Three Theory with Merit),
Imogene Jones (Grade Three Theory with Distinction) and Jay Yu (Grade
Five Theory with Distinction). Jay also achieved the joint top score in
Shanghai with a score of 97%.
Sports Day Round-Up
Sports Day last week was a superb affair. The weather was perfect and the
students performed with a smile on their faces. In Monday’s assembly, Ms.
C announced that the House winners were……….Anand! Well done to
this house and all other competitors!
Founder’s Day
The inaugural DCS Founders Day is not far away now. On Saturday, 26th
Senior
SCHOOL
Our Year 13 students are nearing the end of a gruelling series of exams
stretching over 20 days. It will all be over on Tuesday and then the wait
begins for the results to come out on 6th July. Before that, the students
will graduate from DCS on Wednesday 23rd May and then most of them
will let their hair down at the Amazing Race which visits some lesser
known parts of Shanghai. In wishing them well, I would like to pay
tribute to their dedication, warmth and talents as a truly impressive group
of young people. We are all very proud of them.
University Visits
The University and Careers Office is pleased to welcome to DCS,
representatives from two well-respected American Liberal Arts
Colleges.
Ohio Wesleyan University will be visiting DCS at 1.00pm on Monday,
28th May in the Senior School Library.
Bard College will be visiting DCS at 3.30pm on Wednesday, 13th June,
also in the Senior School Library.
Mrs. Joanne Woodward
Head of DUCKS
Tan had decided not to have presents for their birthdays last month
but to ask for money which they have donated to Heart to Heart. This
just reinforced to me what special children we have in DUCKS.
Founder’s Day
Founder’s Day is almost here and our group of Year 2 children are
busy learning the Maypole Dance. Don’t forget to come along and
watch us on the day!
Mr. Philip Stewart
Head of Junior School
May, all students and their families are invited to this day of celebration
and fun. Junior School students will be playing a large role in the day with
Year 4 students country dancing around 4.00pm and the Junior School
choirs and bands performing in the evening concert. I encourage you all
to attend, especially towards the end of the day when the Junior School
will make up the majority of the main orchestra. It promises to be a great
family day!
Problem of the Week
The first ever Maths Problem of the Week winners were announced on
Monday with Hari Iyer winning the Year 3/4 problem and Sewon Lee
winning the Year 5/6 problem. Over 100 children took part in total. We look
forward to hearing of this week’s winners. The winners will be announced
each week during assembly.
Mr. Nicholas Botting
Head of Senior School
Please make plans to stop by for one or both of these visits to learn more
about the unique facets of a Liberal Arts education in the United States.
Representatives from two of the most prestigious universities from the
UK, Oxford and Imperial College London, will also be visiting the College
next week. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, this meeting will be
held during breaktime on Monday, 21st May, from 9.45am to 10.15am, in
the Senior School Library. We would like to particularly invite students
and parents in Year 12 who have a serious interest in an application to
either of these two universities to attend this meeting.
