Glossary
Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
ABS distributes the braking forces acting on the individual
wheels so that none of the wheels lock up for long,
even during emergency braking, and the vehicle remains
largely steerable.
Acceleration skid control (ASR)
ASR prevents the wheels from spinning when starting off
on slippery surfaces. It only ever provides the amount of
power the driven wheels are capable of transmitting to
the road. Wheelspin, for example on icy roads, is prevented
by the application of precisely metered braking power.
Brake Assist (BA)
The BA ECU detects emergency-braking situations and,
in such situations, provides maximum braking power
within a fraction of a second, thus tangibly reducing the
vehicle’s stopping distance.
Electronic Stability Program (ADAPTIVE ESP ® )
In dynamically critical situations, ADAPTIVE ESP ® controls
the braking power specifically at each individual
wheel whilst the engine is throttled back. The precisely
metered braking of the vehicle prevents the vehicle from
going into a tail-skid, within the bounds of physical possibility.
In contrast to conventional electronic stability systems,
ADAPTIVE ESP ® takes the current vehicle load into
account in its calculations. ADAPTIVE ESP ® therefore
noticeably helps to reduce the risk of skidding during
cornering or evasive manoeuvring.
Start-off Assist
After the brake pedal is released, Start-off Assist maintains
the applied brake pressure for approx. 2 seconds on uphill
slopes of approx. 4% or steeper, thus preventing the vehicle
from rolling backwards for a brief period and making
uphill-starts easier. Start-off Assist is not activated for
downhill-starts or if the handbrake is applied.
