The Purpose of the Site
• The Wheeling Symphony Society is passionate about providing
music enrichment to West Virginia.
• Designed to be unique: provides a personal experience with
Wheeling Symphony musicians via audio and video clips.
• To meet content objectives that are sometimes difficult for
classroom teachers to meet.
• A collaborative effort of various institutions, including the
WSO, West Liberty State College, Ohio County Schools,
Governor Joe Manchin, the WV 77th & 78th Legislatures, and
the WV Division of Tourism.

What is Symphony City?
• Provides numerous highly-engaging activities to help music
teachers supplement their instruction in grades 5-8.
• Makes use of computer technology to provide a
motivational context for addressing key learning
objectives.

What are the learning activities?
• Identify 17 instruments and their sounds.
• Categorize instruments by families.
• Watch and listen carefully to musicians and composers
tell stories about their childhood, career choices,
education, and professional lives.
• Match the components of composition to definitions:
melody, key signature, meter signature, harmony,
phrase and form.
• Listen and match parts of a score together.

Technical Requirements/ Pilot Testing
• Adobe Flash Player version 8 and above. Best viewed
with computers that are no more than three years
old.
• We encourage all of you to take your students to
your computer labs and let them explore Symphony
City on their own.
