FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY
A central Jewish teaching proposes that Hakol tzafui v’ha-r’shut
n’tunah —all is foreseen, and at the same time we are granted freewill.
Is it possible that we have true free-will if indeed all we do
is known before we do it, before we make our choices? One clear
answer to this seeming conundrum suggests that we do have free
will to make the choices we want, but they are foreseen in that
God knows the choices we will make. While there are those who
use Hakol tzafui v’ha-r’shut n’tunah to pretend that they are not
responsible for their choices, Judaism has predominantly and
strongly taught that discernment is what makes us human—and the
choices we make are our own and indeed determine to a large extent
the very essence of our being.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are all about our responsibility
for the choices we make. These Days of Awe remind each of us
that we have the free-will to choose to see things from a fresh
perspective, to achieve a sense of renewal, to better ourselves, and
to make full use of our individual—and collective—potentials;
that each of us has the free-will to distinguish between good and
bad, and to always choose good; that each of us has the free-will to
choose to value the important people and events in our lives, and to
appreciate our blessings; that each of us has the free-will to choose
to be positive, supportive, and involved in life’s good offerings.
As we consider all this, and celebrate the season of new beginnings, how pleasing it is
to be able to see all the great things happening with our congregation. How blessed it is
to have good people who enthusiastically invest time and effort toward the expansion and
intensification of our membership, our activities, our vision.
In this contemplative month of Elul, in preparing for the intensity of the High Holidays,
it is heartwarming to see and take note of all those people around us—near and far—who
exercise their free will to choose to be good and to do good. May
each of us be inspired to choose similarly in all we say and do.
May the choices we make live up to the very best of which we
are capable, to the very holiest that God and Torah expect of us.

FROM THE PRESIDENTS’ PENS
Autumn is a time of renewal and
reuniting at the synagogue, as we prepare
for a New Year with new hopes and
wishes. September marks my eleventh year
as a member of the ACI family, years filled
with community friendship, holiness, and
occasions that enriched my heart and soul.
This is the first High Holy Days that I
will be without my dear twin brother Jay,
of blessed memory. Thank god I am coping
and step by step rebuilding my life. I thank
you for the beautiful cards, donations to
ACI in Jay’s memory, and the support
from all, including clergy. I am grateful to
each person who is helping me climb the
mountain of strength and appreciate your
caring and kindness.
This season invites introspection,
earnest prayer, and of course concentrating
on making ourselves better individuals. It
is important to remember our deeds of the
past year, so that me may improve upon
them and make a positive difference to our
synagogue, our community, and our world.
I believe that, yes, we can change the world
in our own little manner.
May all be inscribed in the Book of
Life for another blessed year of health,
happiness, and prosperity. Shanah Tovah
to all.

(Following the untimely passing in May
of Dr. Jacob Groopman—co-president and
pillar of the Center—Judith Markowitz,
our longtime Board member, Special
Events co-chair, and indefatigable worker,
has become new co-president. We welcome
her to this challenging position, with our
heartfelt support and good wishes.)
Many of you know me. Over 22 years
ago, I married into the Markowitz Family
(members of the ACI since its inception—
Row J to be exact). My husband Steve
and daughters Jill and Leah became bar
and b’not mitzvah here. I joined them on
May 21 of this year by becoming a Ba’alat
Mitzvah.
As I assume the co-presidency with
Cynthia Groopman, I will miss Jay
Groopman z”l. I have big shoes to fill and
hope to follow Jay’s example of kindness
and levelheadedness.
Cindy and I are eager to hear your
questions, comments, or suggestions. You
can always let us know what’s on your
mind by leaving a message for us at the
office, 718-278-2680. We invite you to join
us in making 5772 a spectacular year at the
Astoria Center of Israel.

SPECIAL EVENTS & OUTREACH COMMITTEE
Special thanks to Mitchell Blas for arranging an interesting trip to Manhattan’s Museum
of Jewish Heritage in August to view the Hannah Senesh exhibit. A highlight of the museum,
and its single largest artifact, is the Steinberger Sukkah created by Cantor Lindenblatt’s
great-grandfather in prewar Budapest.
ACI Blood Drive Update: Super chairperson Phylis Hochberg reports that our 46 pints
contributed to the over 30,000 pints collected in Queens alone. Thanks to Phylis and all who
played a part in this mitzvah supreme.
After the hopefully pleasant summer sojourn, we spring into fall. In addition to the below
events, watch for a Book & Jewelry Sale and a concert in later autumn.
