FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY<br />

We celebrate Purim this month. It is<br />

a joyous holiday, and in honor <strong>of</strong> the joy<br />

we wear costumes, we feast, sing, laugh<br />

and dance. But what is it that we are<br />

celebrating? One <strong>of</strong> the problems which<br />

besets a large segment <strong>of</strong> American Jewry is<br />

the “disconnect” that exists between calling<br />

oneself Jewish and actually living Jewishly,<br />

between proclaiming oneself Jewish and<br />

actually knowing its treasures, history,<br />

opportunities and blessings – and what this<br />

all entails. Among the many examples <strong>of</strong><br />

this disconnect, the celebration <strong>of</strong> Jewish<br />

holidays is one. Is there a disconnect, for<br />

example, between the joy <strong>of</strong> Purim and<br />

its perceived meaning? Purim is another<br />

one <strong>of</strong> our stories telling <strong>of</strong> our miraculous<br />

survival in the face <strong>of</strong> threatened extinction.<br />

One would hope that our celebration <strong>of</strong><br />

this survival would engender a revitalized<br />

and deepened commitment to becoming<br />

Jewishly educated, to proudly manifesting<br />

our traditions and observances, to<br />

strengthening our ties to our communities,<br />

to our people, and to <strong>Israel</strong>. In this way<br />

disconnects are set aside in favor <strong>of</strong> intense<br />

and lasting connections that serve to fulfill<br />

our lives.<br />

On this Purim, the story <strong>of</strong> which takes<br />

place outside the land <strong>of</strong> <strong>Israel</strong>, I bring to<br />

your attention the words <strong>of</strong> famed violinist<br />

Isaac Stern, expressed 20 years ago around<br />

the time <strong>of</strong> the Gulf War. He spoke <strong>of</strong><br />

why he loves <strong>Israel</strong>, recalling his first<br />

visit there a year after the creation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Jewish state. (He met his wife Vera there,<br />

and married her 17 days later; and returned<br />

to <strong>Israel</strong> many times.) Reflecting upon<br />

the situation in the Middle East during<br />

the Gulf War, Stern announced, “Teddy<br />

Kollek, the Mayor <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem, recently<br />

called to complain that Europeans and<br />

Asians are coming to <strong>Israel</strong>, but American<br />

Jews are afraid to go. Vera and I will be<br />

there next month. We’re not afraid to go.<br />

We will go, we will share. For that sharing<br />

we are grateful, because it gives us the<br />

strength to belong—not only to them—but<br />

most important, we belong to ourselves.<br />

We know who we are.”<br />

Happy Purim. May your celebration <strong>of</strong><br />

Purim, and <strong>of</strong> your larger Jewish life, be<br />

filled with deep and lasting meaning and<br />

Our 85th Anniversary Journal Nominees<br />

In 1971, with Rabbi Alvin Kass as spiritual leader <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Center</strong>, ten women collectively<br />

became Bat Mitzvah. We are enriched by the continuing membership <strong>of</strong> five <strong>of</strong> them:<br />

Hannah Bluh, Elaine Brichta, Charlotte Kramer, Rose Ratn<strong>of</strong>f, & Jeanne Siegel. They were<br />

prepared by Dale Brichta & Barbara Siegel. Now, forty years later, eight current members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Center</strong> are preparing for their Bat Mitzvah on May 21.<br />

In the fall <strong>of</strong> 2009 ACI’s Rabbi Jonathan Pearl asked for candidates for the 2-year<br />

intensive Ba’alat Mitzvah program he created. (Whereas the bat mitzvah is associated<br />

with a child’s perspective on assuming the obligation <strong>of</strong> mitzvot, Rabbi Pearl conceived<br />

the term Ba’alat Mitzvah—literally “master <strong>of</strong> mitzvah”—for adults with a wiser and more<br />

mature perspective on assuming the obligation <strong>of</strong> mitzvot.) Like our predecessors, we had<br />

been denied the opportunity when we were 12 or 13 years old. The eight <strong>of</strong> us are now<br />

entering the final months <strong>of</strong> preparation. With the learned insights <strong>of</strong> Rabbi Pearl, we have<br />

read, studied, and discussed the Concise Book <strong>of</strong> Mitzvot, a guide to the tenets <strong>of</strong> Judaism,<br />

by Rabbi Yisrael Meir ha Kohen (more widely known as the Chafetz Chayim).<br />

We are diverse in our backgrounds. Some <strong>of</strong> the women are children <strong>of</strong> Holocaust survivors;<br />

others come from traditionally observant East European families. Another’s childhood<br />

was spent in an overwhelmingly non-Jewish environment. One grew up in <strong>Astoria</strong>, but<br />

in a Reform household, even though the family was very involved with this Conservative<br />

synagogue. What is especially interesting about the eight <strong>of</strong> us is the openness with which<br />

we have discussed our approach to the mitzvot. All eight have been deeply involved in<br />

<strong>Center</strong> activities. There are two facile Torah readers, two gabbais, the Yahrzeit secretary,<br />

the Bulletin editor, a vice president, members <strong>of</strong> numerous committees, and an historian.<br />

The discussions have been lively, and the opportunity to do some soul searching in the<br />

pursuit <strong>of</strong> our understanding <strong>of</strong> Judaism has been enriching. We are indebted to Rabbi<br />

Pearl for creating a non-judgmental atmosphere so that we could be free to reveal our true<br />

feelings.<br />

It is with humility that we—Sally Constain, Sydelle Diner, Hanna Harel, Phylis<br />

Hochberg, Elaine Lindenblatt, Judith Markowitz, Susan Mickel, & Roberta<br />

Saltzman—accept the honor <strong>of</strong> being the designees <strong>of</strong> the 85th Anniversary Journal.<br />

Chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Board. With her dedication and<br />

innovative leadership, may she continue to be a wise<br />

Judith Markowitz, incoming Vice Chair. We wish them —and the entire slate <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers and<br />

Board members—a productive and satisfying term.<br />

IN THEIR OWN WORDS<br />

Greetings,<br />

My name is Steven Guralnick. In January <strong>2011</strong>, I was elected Chairperson <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Astoria</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Israel</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees and Governors. My wife’s name is Irene Liorah<br />

Guralnick; my son’s name is Andrew Jason Guralnick. We have been members <strong>of</strong> ACI for<br />

ten years. My son had his Bar Mitzvah at the synagogue in April 2003. I have served as<br />

Vice-President <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Center</strong> and, more recently, Vice Chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Board. I am also<br />

chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Board’s financial committee.<br />

Recently, I have seen a resurgence in membership at our synagogue through the<br />

indefatigable efforts <strong>of</strong> Rabbi Pearl and his family. I hope that the Board and Officers will<br />

provide their continued support and participation in furtherance <strong>of</strong> this effort. May our<br />

congregation be blessed with health and prosperity presently and in the future.<br />

Megillah Reading & Purim Service<br />

Saturday, <strong>March</strong> 19,7:45 pm<br />

It’s our annual foray into strange & wonderful costumes, yummy hamantashen, trinkets<br />

& toys—in other words, the whole megillah. Come cheer goodness & jeer evil as we<br />

celebrate our triumph <strong>of</strong> life & liberty. The fun continues on Sunday, <strong>March</strong> 20, from<br />

3-5 pm, with family activities to enjoy together. Bring the kids to both!<br />

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN<br />

<strong>March</strong>, to me, begins the march into<br />

springtime—the time <strong>of</strong> renewal <strong>of</strong> God’s<br />

exquisite creation, and the resurgence <strong>of</strong> our<br />

spirits and energy. We start with Shabbat<br />

Across America, which opens the door<br />

to understanding and loving the Sabbath.<br />

Through the cold winter and weekdays <strong>of</strong><br />

stress and strain, looking forward to Shabbat<br />

sustains us in an optimistic mode. It is our<br />

gift to behold, to personally embrace.<br />

Here at the <strong>Center</strong>, with our Rabbi and<br />

Cantor, Shabbat is special. Amid singing,<br />

prayers, and sermons, we meld into a<br />

tapestry <strong>of</strong> all generations, sipping from the<br />

cup <strong>of</strong> fellowship and joy. The elegance <strong>of</strong><br />

the Torah, its regal specialness, makes me<br />

proud to be Jewish. Shabbat has sustained<br />

me—and our people—through life’s<br />

challenges.<br />

We move on to Purim, when our<br />

determination and fortitude once again won<br />

out over tyranny. It is a time <strong>of</strong> elation with<br />

the reading <strong>of</strong> the Megillah <strong>of</strong> Esther, a<br />

woman <strong>of</strong> valor.<br />

I want to congratulate Steven Guralnick<br />

and Judy Markowitz, incoming chairperson<br />

and vice chairperson <strong>of</strong> our Board. They<br />

follow in the worthy footsteps <strong>of</strong> former<br />

chair Andrea Pack, whose good works and<br />

sound judgment have benefited many areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> ACI. Let us continue to work together,<br />

with heads and hearts, with open minds,<br />

toward the welfare <strong>of</strong> our synagogue. We<br />

have indeed heeded the word <strong>of</strong> God, to<br />

build a sanctuary where He will dwell<br />

among us and create a people who cares,<br />

shares, and thrives.<br />

Toward that end, all <strong>of</strong> your participation<br />

and support is greatly needed and<br />

appreciated.<br />

Mazel tov to the Harel Family on the birth<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jacob Peter Harel. It is gratifying to see<br />

new generations entering our community,<br />

budding like the seedlings <strong>of</strong> spring. May<br />

each <strong>of</strong> us continue to bloom in this, our<br />

sacred worship home.<br />

Despite the snowy weather that forced the cancellation <strong>of</strong> a few events, we’ve<br />

managed to have a lively winter at ACI. Thanks to everyone who came out to participate,<br />

Kudos to David Bernstein for chairing January’s fun Havdalah & a Movie night,<br />

including the logistics that enabled us to view Rivkin: Bounty Hunter which featured<br />

a bar mitzvah scene in our own beautiful sanctuary. Our appreciation to Cara<br />

Bernstein for the yummy popcorn concession, to The Pearls for their incisive talk<br />

on Jewish images in popular TV, and to Sue Ann Blas whose press work sparked<br />

a lovely article on the event in the local paper.<br />

We thank ACI friends Dr. Karen Lewkowitz & Dr. Monte Miller for hosting<br />

February’s angelic Lunch & Learn, in honor <strong>of</strong> Rabbi & Judy Pearl. The topic was<br />

Jewish Angels—from biblical, talmudic, and liturgical perspectives.<br />
