FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY
We celebrate Purim this month. It is
a joyous holiday, and in honor of the joy
we wear costumes, we feast, sing, laugh
and dance. But what is it that we are
celebrating? One of the problems which
besets a large segment of American Jewry is
the “disconnect” that exists between calling
oneself Jewish and actually living Jewishly,
between proclaiming oneself Jewish and
actually knowing its treasures, history,
opportunities and blessings – and what this
all entails. Among the many examples of
this disconnect, the celebration of Jewish
holidays is one. Is there a disconnect, for
example, between the joy of Purim and
its perceived meaning? Purim is another
one of our stories telling of our miraculous
survival in the face of threatened extinction.
One would hope that our celebration of
this survival would engender a revitalized
and deepened commitment to becoming
Jewishly educated, to proudly manifesting
our traditions and observances, to
strengthening our ties to our communities,
to our people, and to Israel. In this way
disconnects are set aside in favor of intense
and lasting connections that serve to fulfill
our lives.
On this Purim, the story of which takes
place outside the land of Israel, I bring to
your attention the words of famed violinist
Isaac Stern, expressed 20 years ago around
the time of the Gulf War. He spoke of
why he loves Israel, recalling his first
visit there a year after the creation of the
Jewish state. (He met his wife Vera there,
and married her 17 days later; and returned
to Israel many times.) Reflecting upon
the situation in the Middle East during
the Gulf War, Stern announced, “Teddy
Kollek, the Mayor of Jerusalem, recently
called to complain that Europeans and
Asians are coming to Israel, but American
Jews are afraid to go. Vera and I will be
there next month. We’re not afraid to go.
We will go, we will share. For that sharing
we are grateful, because it gives us the
strength to belong—not only to them—but
most important, we belong to ourselves.
We know who we are.”
Happy Purim. May your celebration of
Purim, and of your larger Jewish life, be
filled with deep and lasting meaning and
connection.
Our 85th Anniversary Journal Nominees
In 1971, with Rabbi Alvin Kass as spiritual leader of the Center, ten women collectively
became Bat Mitzvah. We are enriched by the continuing membership of five of them:
Hannah Bluh, Elaine Brichta, Charlotte Kramer, Rose Ratnoff, & Jeanne Siegel. They were
prepared by Dale Brichta & Barbara Siegel. Now, forty years later, eight current members
of the Center are preparing for their Bat Mitzvah on May 21.
In the fall of 2009 ACI’s Rabbi Jonathan Pearl asked for candidates for the 2-year
intensive Ba’alat Mitzvah program he created. (Whereas the bat mitzvah is associated
with a child’s perspective on assuming the obligation of mitzvot, Rabbi Pearl conceived
the term Ba’alat Mitzvah—literally “master of mitzvah”—for adults with a wiser and more
mature perspective on assuming the obligation of mitzvot.) Like our predecessors, we had
been denied the opportunity when we were 12 or 13 years old. The eight of us are now
entering the final months of preparation. With the learned insights of Rabbi Pearl, we have
read, studied, and discussed the Concise Book of Mitzvot, a guide to the tenets of Judaism,
by Rabbi Yisrael Meir ha Kohen (more widely known as the Chafetz Chayim).
We are diverse in our backgrounds. Some of the women are children of Holocaust survivors;
others come from traditionally observant East European families. Another’s childhood
was spent in an overwhelmingly non-Jewish environment. One grew up in Astoria, but
in a Reform household, even though the family was very involved with this Conservative
synagogue. What is especially interesting about the eight of us is the openness with which
we have discussed our approach to the mitzvot. All eight have been deeply involved in
Center activities. There are two facile Torah readers, two gabbais, the Yahrzeit secretary,
the Bulletin editor, a vice president, members of numerous committees, and an historian.
The discussions have been lively, and the opportunity to do some soul searching in the
pursuit of our understanding of Judaism has been enriching. We are indebted to Rabbi
Pearl for creating a non-judgmental atmosphere so that we could be free to reveal our true
feelings.
It is with humility that we—Sally Constain, Sydelle Diner, Hanna Harel, Phylis
Hochberg, Elaine Lindenblatt, Judith Markowitz, Susan Mickel, & Roberta
Saltzman—accept the honor of being the designees of the 85th Anniversary Journal.
CHAIR’S CORNER
Chairperson of the Board. With her dedication and
innovative leadership, may she continue to be a wise
voice of counsel to ACI. The gavel passes to Steven Guralnick, incoming Chairperson, and
Judith Markowitz, incoming Vice Chair. We wish them —and the entire slate of officers and
Board members—a productive and satisfying term.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Greetings,
My name is Steven Guralnick. In January 2011, I was elected Chairperson of the
Astoria Center of Israel Board of Trustees and Governors. My wife’s name is Irene Liorah
Guralnick; my son’s name is Andrew Jason Guralnick. We have been members of ACI for
ten years. My son had his Bar Mitzvah at the synagogue in April 2003. I have served as
Vice-President of the Center and, more recently, Vice Chairperson of the Board. I am also
chairperson of the Board’s financial committee.
Recently, I have seen a resurgence in membership at our synagogue through the
indefatigable efforts of Rabbi Pearl and his family. I hope that the Board and Officers will
provide their continued support and participation in furtherance of this effort. May our
congregation be blessed with health and prosperity presently and in the future.
Megillah Reading & Purim Service
Saturday, March 19,7:45 pm
It’s our annual foray into strange & wonderful costumes, yummy hamantashen, trinkets
& toys—in other words, the whole megillah. Come cheer goodness & jeer evil as we
celebrate our triumph of life & liberty. The fun continues on Sunday, March 20, from
3-5 pm, with family activities to enjoy together. Bring the kids to both!
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN
March, to me, begins the march into
springtime—the time of renewal of God’s
exquisite creation, and the resurgence of our
spirits and energy. We start with Shabbat
Across America, which opens the door
to understanding and loving the Sabbath.
Through the cold winter and weekdays of
stress and strain, looking forward to Shabbat
sustains us in an optimistic mode. It is our
gift to behold, to personally embrace.
Here at the Center, with our Rabbi and
Cantor, Shabbat is special. Amid singing,
prayers, and sermons, we meld into a
tapestry of all generations, sipping from the
cup of fellowship and joy. The elegance of
the Torah, its regal specialness, makes me
proud to be Jewish. Shabbat has sustained
me—and our people—through life’s
challenges.
We move on to Purim, when our
determination and fortitude once again won
out over tyranny. It is a time of elation with
the reading of the Megillah of Esther, a
woman of valor.
I want to congratulate Steven Guralnick
and Judy Markowitz, incoming chairperson
and vice chairperson of our Board. They
follow in the worthy footsteps of former
chair Andrea Pack, whose good works and
sound judgment have benefited many areas
of ACI. Let us continue to work together,
with heads and hearts, with open minds,
toward the welfare of our synagogue. We
have indeed heeded the word of God, to
build a sanctuary where He will dwell
among us and create a people who cares,
shares, and thrives.
Toward that end, all of your participation
and support is greatly needed and
appreciated.
Mazel tov to the Harel Family on the birth
of Jacob Peter Harel. It is gratifying to see
new generations entering our community,
budding like the seedlings of spring. May
each of us continue to bloom in this, our
sacred worship home.
Love to all,
