2. The <strong>Castle</strong> was built over 900 years ago.<br />

3. The <strong>Castle</strong> was built for William I, known as William <strong>the</strong> Conqueror.<br />

4. The <strong>Castle</strong> was first made from wood, using trees from <strong>the</strong> surrounding forest.<br />

5. This site at Windsor was chosen because it was <strong>the</strong> highest point above <strong>the</strong> River<br />

Thames for many miles <strong>and</strong> would have afforded both excellent views of any<br />

approaching invaders, <strong>and</strong> protection of <strong>the</strong> main trade route to London. It was also<br />

surrounded by a huge forest.<br />

<strong>the</strong> Keep. Here at Windsor it was built on top of a man-made hill in <strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Castle</strong>, called <strong>the</strong> motte. During <strong>the</strong> reign of George IV <strong>the</strong> height of <strong>the</strong> Tower was<br />

raised by almost 10 metres.<br />

climbing up <strong>the</strong> walls. They were also added in between <strong>the</strong> heavy stone blocks to<br />
