Scenic Route to Phillip Island - Platypus Country

Now that you’re heading to East Gippsland take time to ride
and explore its breathtaking natural beauty – everything from
stunning coastal or forest or alpine landscapes through to the
Southern Hemisphere’s largest lake system; East Gippsland
has it all.
If you have time
up your sleeve . . .
Turn left at Cann River and explore the coastline between Cann River
and Mallacoota (53 kms) or Cann River and Genoa (47 kms).
Or as a great alternative, turn left at the signs to Cape Conran/
Marlo (46 kms from Cann River). Cape Conran (13 kms) has very
picturesque views and comfy cabins in the bush. Marlo (18 kms) is
where the legendary Snowy River meets the sea. Stay at the Marlo
Motel or head on to Orbost (14kms). This is a great ride over good
sealed roads and lets you explore a little of the fabulous coastline.
Or head to Bruthen via Buchan or Nowa Nowa and ride the Great
Alpine Road - Australia’s highest year-round accessible bitumen road
and one of the finest riding experiences imaginable.
Or explore Lakes Entrance, Metung or Paynesville, all beautiful
townships on the Gippsland Lakes.
Things to do on route
• Visit the Early Settlers Hut at Delegate.
• Stop at Black Allen Line—the NSW Victoria border.
• Look for platypus in the rivers
• Enjoy a break in the Orbost’s Forest Park and visit the hisotric
Slab Hut and inspiring Exhibition Gallery.
• Take a tour through the spectacular Buchan Caves.
• When riding the Great Alpine Road visit the historic Justice Precinct
in Omeo and the Oriental Claims gold diggings.
• Walk across the footbridge at Lakes Entrance to the famed 90
Mile Beach or take a boat cruise and explore the Lakes visiting the
Fisherman’s Co-op just out of town for the freshest catch straight
from the boats.
The scenic route to
Phillip Island
and beyond
Ride from Bombala to Delegate on a gently curving
sealed road. Once at Delegate have a stop and enjoy
a cold one at the hotel or a hot coffee at the café.
2kms from Delegate you will hit dirt; the surface can
be quite loose so watch it. The dirt continues for
8kms with sweeping curves and finishes nearly on
the doorstep of the Delegate River Tavern. From the
Tavern the road has some twisting ‘S’ bends leading
to a gravel section of 12kms. After this it’s sealed
with great bends through amazing mountain forest
all the way to Orbost. Keep your eyes open as log
trucks also use this road.
Ultimate Rides
Alternatively you could ride from Bombala to Cann
River over 96kms of sealed road which starts out in
open country and then the bends increase in number
as you get towards the hills and the border. The
caravan park or motel in Cann River are both great
stop-over points. The highway to Orbost has some
great bends, look out for the road to Marlo it makes
a great side trip before or after heading to Orbost
and a stay at the Marlo Motel is highly recommended.
Once in Orbost the Orbost Caravan Park right on the
Snowy River is a great place to stop.
From Orbost you have two choices. You can get a
taste of Snowy River Country by riding to Bairnsdale
via the Orbost-Buchan Road combining easy rural
riding with exhilarating winding roads through
beautiful forest. Country style tucker is found at a
great little cafe, Two Fat Ladies & Her. From Buchan
you have a flat, yet attractive, run to Bruthen through
great forest scenery. Call-in at the hotel for a cold one
or a bite to eat. From Bruthen it’s easy highway riding
all the way to Bairnsdale.
Alternatively, from Orbost follow the Princes Highway
to Nowa Nowa where the hotel/motel is a great
place to stop. Riding conditions are typical highway
with some nice bends through forest and farmland.
Continue on to the region’s main holiday spot at
Lakes Entrance with great accommodation,
cafes and things to do. Follow Highway 1 to
Bairnsdale and then the signs to Phillip Island and
beyond……...
