Dear Members
I take this opportunity to welcome you to the
summer season 2012/2013 and hope all our
members had a safe winter with successful results
in their respective winter sports or other pursuits.
The club has now been back on the beach since
22 nd September 2012 and to date all sections of
the club have been very busy ensuring that you
make your time at the club safe and enjoyable, so
please support your Club including support with
social and fund raising functions.

month at the Club. Now summer is here, come down from

North Steyne recognises the need to change and
move with the times but in difficult economics
times we need to be prudent in how we manage
that change in regards to balancing the needs of
all sections. As you may have seen in previous
Tiger Talks and the Web site the club is getting
there.
The Club Directors and their assistants including
panels do need more help both in personnel and
much needed sponsors, so if you are keen to see
your Club grow, come forward and introduce
yourself to us or drop us an email.

Dress code is cocktail. Prizes will be awarded to
the best dressed in Cadets/Student and Senior
categories.
Raffle tickets with great prizes have been selling.
Tickets are 1 for $5 or 3 for $10 and are available
from the Club. The raffle will be drawn on the
Black & Gold night. There will also be a lucky door
prize. Please support this raffle as all funds raised
will go back to the Club.

As Club President I take this opportunity to say
congratulations on all competitors who have
represented North Steyne in events conducted so
far and as you will see from reading this current
Tiger Talk, we gave had great success so early in
the season with more to come. It’s not where you
come in the event but how you enjoy participating
in a great sport “Surf Life Saving” and wearing
North Steyne Colours.
Don’t forget to come to Dee Why beach on
Saturday to cheer on our boat crew, the
Nuthuggers in the first of the Open Thunder series.

Competition News
Competition for season 2012/13 started in October
with the Ocean series for ski paddlers, also surf
boats which competed in the Roosters River Run
13.5km on the Georges River and Bondi to
Watsons Bay 11km. Our masters boat team
“Alcopops” competed in both events gaining a
close second at the Roosters. The following
weekend on the finish line they were joined by
quite a few North Steyne ski paddlers who battled
it out in the Ocean Series.
Black & Gold Dance
Is being held at Balgowlah RSL Club commencing
at 7.30pm. Tickets are $60 for Cadets/students
who are under 25 years of age and $90 for
Seniors. Ticket prices have been set to cover
food, band and venue booking – nothing else!
To make your bookings, you can either pay by
cheque or cash to the Club (PO Box 310, Manly,
NSW, 1655) or drop it in the Admin box door in a
sealed envelope with your name on it.
Alternatively, you can pay on-line through the
Club’s website – home page (use the payment
system link) and take it from there. Please ensure
that you put your name in the description section.

Open rowers in the prestigious Ocean Thunder
Series.

Competition Training for November
Board training with Shannon Cooper for cadets to
masters 9am Sunday – a weekday session will be
added soon depending on demand.
The Club swim is held every
Saturday at 9.30am and is now into it’s
fourth week. Come on down to join others and to
also hone your swimming skills in time for your
proficiency. You will be joining like-minded people
who want to improve their fitness – this is not for
the elite – all and every financial member is
welcome.
The ladies changeroom on a Sunday
morning is very busy. If you could limit your
shower time to two minutes, I am sure the five
members standing in line would very much
appreciate it.
Can Too are looking for a swim coach or two
for their swim programs on a Wednesday night at
Terry Hills pool and Saturday mornings at Mona

Nipper Natters
Hundreds of North Steyne nippers and their
parents got a big surprise when London Olympic
Gold Medallist Murray Stewart turned up during
our Sunday muster with his gold medal. Murray
was a member of our winning K4 Kayak team and
posed for photos for over an hour with our nippers.
Nippers from 8-14 competed in a number of water
and beach events under qualified officials. The
beach was a blaze of colour and sponsor's tents
and drew a large crowd watching from the
promenade.
A big thank you to the Committee, Age Managers,
Officials, water safety, parents and especially the
kids for a great event.
All the kids were allowed to hold the medal as
Murray spoke to parents and told them what the
experience was like.
The only downer on the morning was a "butter
fingered" Nipper Chairman who dropped the medal
in the sand. Oops!
Murray is engaged to Rebecca Keelan our water
coach and we thank them both for a morning that
I'm sure our nippers will always remember.
Last Saturday was the Nippers disco held in the
Club hall. There were shrieks, loud music and
plenty of disco dancing by our nippers who
thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Thank you to
everybody who helped in the organising of this
event and thank you to all the parents who
enjoyed some “adult” company while their children
were dancing the afternoon away. Photos will
follow in the December Tiger Talk.

On Sunday 21st October our nippers competed in
our first Club Championships for over 10 years.

Special Needs Nippers
You may have seen some new nippers members
and their parents on the beach between 11am-
12.30pm on Sunday mornings. The Special Needs
Nippers program is in full flight with 11 new
members from U6 to U12 participating in beach
events, some basic beach information, in the water
on the new Torpedo Boards and some great all
round fun. Our kids come from all over Sydney
with most attending the Vern Barnett School for
Autism at Forestville. Lend Lease Foundation
provided a $5,000 Community Grant for the
program which has been used to purchase new
equipment and meet the fees and costs for the
participants. Chris Rath (Distinguished Club
member), who is also a Lend Lease employee,
has returned to Sundays on the beach to be
involved.

Ultimately, this is about providing access and fun
on the beach for those kids that may not normally
be involved in beach activities, learn about safety
on the beach and in the water whilst having a
great time. Thank you for the support of the
Nippers Committee, Jo Cooper, Chris Rath, Shane
O'Neill for their involvement and some of our
senior nippers including Mia Stewart, Emma
Hillier, Jack Watt and Olivia Gompes for their
assistance in the water. A special thank you to
Bear Cottage who donated a beach going wheel
chair for those kids that may not be able to access
the sand. Please make them all feel welcome and
your involvement is welcome.
