President’s Report 

Summer has arrived and after all the rain 

we had earlier in the year, the weather 

forecasters are predicting a hot and dry 

summer, so why not come down to the club 

and sit in air conditioned comfort or just sit 

on the veranda and enjoy a cool drink and 

partake in the food from either the Cafe on 

the Park or our new Fusion Brasserie. Angus 

and his chefs Romeo and Lee have settled 

in to their new surrounds and with a new 

extensive menu the Brasserie is well worth 

a visit. 

The club, as we always do at this time of the 

year, have a number of special promotions 

coming up starting with Melbourne Cup 

Day, you are on a sure winner if you come 

along and enjoy this great day, then we 

have our very popular Fete and Children’s 

Christmas Party in the park, this is a fun 

day for the whole family with rides, live 

entertainment, cakes stalls and all those 

things that go to make up a fun day. 

The club as a way of giving back to the 

members has a number of special subsidised 

promotions as we do with Our President 

and Director’s Night is on the 1st December 

the cost is only $35.00 and that includes 

a three course meal, drinks and a great 

show, this would have to be the best value 

night out in Sydney. The Senior Citizen’s 

Christmas Lunch on the 4th December 

the cost is only $12.00 for a two course 

meal with drinks including some great 

entertainment, book early for this one. 

The Kingsgrove RSL Club offers its 

congratulations to the Kingsgrove RSL 

Sub Branch on the occasion of the 60th 

Anniversary of their signing the RSL Charter; 

this was the start of the club as we know 

it today. The Sub Branch held a VP Day 

Commemoration Service with a special 

luncheon on Sunday the 12th August to mark 

the occasion. 

My thanks to the Board of Directors for their 

time and effort during the year, we are on 

track to have another successful year. This 

of course would not be possible without the 

time and hard work put in by our General 

Manager Ian Todd, Assistant General 

Manager Wayne McFayden who along with 

the rest of our dedicated Management Team 

and staff has done a great job in looking after 

our members. 

Thanks to the Sub-Branch, Women’s 

Auxiliary and the Kingsgrove Community 

Group who keep our RSL traditions alive 

and who also ensure that we care for the 

older members of the community who are 

in Hospital or Nursing Homes. 

Kingsgrove RSL Club once again gave 

generously during the year to many 

local Community groups and sporting 

organisations by way of the ClubGRANTS 

totalling $97,000. 

On behalf of the Board of Directors I wish 

all Kingsgrove RSL Club members and their 

families a Merry Christmas and a Happy, 

Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

General Manager’s Report 

Well we are near the end of the year and it 

has been a very busy year for your Club and 

the Club industry. 

On the federal front it seems the mandatory 

pre commitment issue has been quashed 

however we as a Club are always committed 

to the Responsible Conduct of Gambling 

and through our ongoing support from 

ClubSafe we will continue to assist patrons 

who request help. 

2012 ClubGRANT recipients 

I was also very pleased to represent your 

Club along with Club President Alan Barnes at 

the recent ClubGRANTS presentation where 

your club donated over $35,000 to a number 

of worthy organisations. This was in addition 

to the $62,000 your Club committed to 

sporting activities throughout 2012. 

Now for the following upcoming events for 

your club: 

• Our Fete is on again with Santa and Holly’s 

Jolly Christmas. Fun for the whole family 

and all kids who purchase a ticket will 

receive a free show bag and free rides all 

day, plus there are many stalls for mum & 

dad. Saturday 24th November from 11am 

to 4pm. Tickets are limited and are on sale 

now at reception at $3. 

• Saturday 1st December 2012 come along 

and enjoy all glitz and glamour with our 

Tribute Show “All About Johnny” with 

the amazing sounds from John Farnham, 

Johnny cash, Johnny Mathis Johnny 

O’Keefe and many more starting at 7pm 

with tickets only $35 all inclusive, tickets go 

on sale Monday 3rd October. 

• Join us for our Senior Citizens Christmas 

Lunch on Tuesday 4th December at 

12.30pm. Tickets are only $12 featuring 

the sounds of Frankie Valentyn. Tickets go 

on sale Monday 1st October 2012. 

• Our Christmas Ham Raffles are always a 

great hit and this year will be no exception 

with 101 ½ leg hams being given away on 

Friday 7th December and again on Friday 

14th December. Tickets are only $1 and 

are on sale from 3pm. Draw to commence 

at 5.30pm. There will be 202 half leg hams 

to be won over the two draws. 

• Friday 21st December will see our Seafood 

raffle take place in time for Christmas 

Tickets are $1.00 and are on sale from 

4.30pm. Draw to commence at 5.30pm. to 

win an array of oysters prawns crabs etc. 

• You could win a 2013 Kia Rio Reborn with 

your membership renewal. That’s right! 

You could win a 5 door automatic Kia by 

simply joining the Club or renewing your

sausage sizzle, live entertainment, $2.50 

beers and $2 glasses of wine and a mega

• Chinese New Year will be held here at 

the Club on Saturday 9th February with 2 

amazing banquet menu’s on offer from our 

Fusion Brasserie (details on page 7) with 

a live lion dance performance at 7.30pm.

available in the auditorium on this night. 

As this is the last edition of the year, I would

How different kinds of lettuces taste & how to use them 

Far from the shrink-wrapped iceberg lettuce that used to populate grocery stores, most of us now face a choice of lettuce 

varieties and salad greens at the market – particularly if we shop at farmers markets. Lettuces in general are cool weather 

crops, at their best in spring and early summer before high heats and long days make them bolt and turn bitter. Look for 

lettuce year-round in ultra-temperate climates, fall and spring in mainly temperate areas, and in the late spring through the 

summer months in cooler climates. 

Nothing compares with truly fresh salad greens. If you think you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a bag of 

pre-washed lettuce preserved with a blast of gas and a head of just-picked lettuce from a farmers market, try a side-by-side 

comparison. The delights of truly fresh lettuce are one of the greatest taste advantages to eating locally. 

beautifully in salads, especially with delicate 

dressings like Buttermilk Dill Salad Dressing 

or in Asparagus Butter Lettuce Salad. Look 

for pale green and red-tinged varieties. 

Arugula 

Arugula (a.k.a. rocket) has long, spiked, 

dark green leaves and a peppery flavor. 

Wild-harvested arugula is the most 

pungent (look for it at farmers markets 

and local foods co-ops). Cultivated arugula 

is widely available and varies greatly in 

strength of flavor. In general, larger leaves 

tend to be stronger tasting, but if pungency 

is a concern, be sure to taste the batch 

before using. 

Use arugula alone to stand up to tangy 

dressings (like Lemon Garlic Vinaigrette) 

and bold flavors, or mixed with other 

lettuces as an accent note. Arugula is also a 

great way to add a kick to hearty dishes like 

Chicken With Bread Salad and Arugula. 

Mizuna 

Mizuna is an Asian variety of mustard 

greens. It has spiky dark green leaves that 

have a surprisingly delicate texture and 

delightfully peppery, even spicy kick. 

Butter or Boston Lettuce 

Butter lettuce is commonly available. It is a 

crisp-head lettuce, meaning its leaves form 

a compact head as it grows – although its 

head is much less compact than iceberg 

lettuce. Butter lettuce has a tender 

texture and large, cupped leaves that work 

Oak Leaf Lettuce 

There are several varieties of oak 

leaf lettuce – green, red, bronze 

– but they are all loose-leaf lettuces, 

meaning the leaves stay loose and 

attached only at the base as they 

grow instead of forming tight, compact 

heads like iceberg lettuce or cabbage. 

They make excellent salads and work 

with a wide range of dressings. Discard 

the external leaves if they are damaged or 

wilted. If working with small heads, use the 

leaves whole. Larger leaves can be torn 

into bite-sized pieces when cleaning. 


Watercress 

Watercress has a bright, peppery flavor 

prized for salads and gently “wilted” 

preparations. It grows wild in streams in 

Northern America and Europe, but is easily 

cultivated with the right irrigation. Much 

cultivated “watercress” is actually garden 

cress, which has slightly less bite and crunch 

than its watercress cousin. Whatever cress 

we’re talking about, they’re all members 

of the mustard family. The older they 

get – either in the ground or after being 

harvested – the sharper their flavor 

becomes. Use cress as soon as possible, 

removing any yellowed or wilted leaves. 

Tender stalks and roots are perfectly edible 

along with the dark green leaves. 

Romaine Hearts 

Romaine lettuce is hale and hearty. Its crunchy 

texture can stand up to any dressing - from 

a light gingery vinaigrette to a full-blown thick 

and creamy Blue Cheese Dressing. 

Mesclun 

Mesclun means “mixed” in Provencal and is 

traditionally composed of several varieties 

of wild-harvested, young greens. Most 

mesclun sold today is cultivated–planted 

as beds of mixed lettuce seeds harvested 

when the leaves reach the desired size of 

3 to 6 inches). Look for mixes that contain 

young, sweet leaves from a variety of 

tender lettuces, maybe a bit of curly endive 

for texture, some peppery watercress or 

arugula for bite, and maybe a few herbs. 

Some farms and markets sell special 

“spicy” mixtures that have more arugula, 

watercress, mezzula, and mustard leaves. 

Blue Cheese 

Salad Dressing 

This homemade blue cheese dressing is 

easy to make. Bonus prize = you can use 

your favorite blue cheese – from mild and 

creamy to pungent and crumbly. 

Prep Time 10 minutes 

Total Time 10 minutes 

8 oz. blue cheese 

1/2 cup buttermilk 

1/3 cup mayonnaise 

1/4 cup sour cream 

1 Tbsp. good-quality white wine or 

red wine vinegar 

1 tsp mustard 

Salt to taste (optional) 

Cos 

Cos lettuce – a tasty, succulent lettuce 

with an elongated head and dark green, 

long, narrow, crisp leaves – is believed 

to be the oldest cultivated lettuce. Cos 

lettuce has a crispy, crunchy texture and 

a slightly sweet, tangy flavour. 

The interior leaves which are paler in 

colour have the most delicate flavour. 

Cos lettuce is the key ingredient 

traditionally used in the classic Caesar 

salad where its leaves are torn and 

scattered and are the perfect texture to 

soak up the creamy dressing. 

Preparation 

In a medium bowl, use a fork to mash 

blue cheese into a paste or crumbly bits, 

depending on texture of the cheese. 

Work in buttermilk until it is as smooth 

as possible. Stir in mayonnaise, sour 

cream, vinegar, and mustard until well 

blended. Add salt to taste, if you like (this 

will depend on how salty the cheese 

was, you may very well not need any 

additional salt). Use immediately or 

keep, covered and chilled, up to 1 week. 

Makes about 1&1/2 cup dressing.

Colour 

Bright straw colour with youthful green tinges. 

Nose 

The nose is lifted with aromas of exotic fruits as 

well as ripe pear and spicy peach. 

Palate 

The palate is mouth filling, full of natural grape 

sweetness and rounded out with a crisp balancing 

finish. This wine should be served well chilled and 

enjoyed when young and fresh.

C ommunity Group 

We are at the end of another year and again 

we are very busy leading up to Christmas. 

The Fete is in November and we will have 

a stall, so come along and browse and if you 

like what we have you can purchase and 

support our seniors in the community. 

We are organising presents for the Nursing 

Homes for Christmas. They enjoy us going 

along each Christmas to give them presents 

and we enjoy doing this for them. If you 

would like to join our group, you are most 

welcome. Leave your name at reception and 

they will get in touch with us. 

A couple of morning tea/ lunches have been 

organized since our last Burst and all that 

attended enjoyed their day. Bingo is played 

and everyone goes home with a present 

in hand. The three Nursing Homes are 

Eddystone – Bexley, Bupa – Narwee, Banks 

Lodge – Peakhurst and also we are attending 

Kingsgrove Community Aid Centre. 

Since the price of wool has risen over the 

last couple of years we have to raise the 

price of our sets that we make. They will be 

$55.00 a set, or Bear $10.00, Hat $10.00, 

Scarf $10.00 and Rugs will be $30.00. If 

you would like to order any items please 

leave your order at reception. We also do 

cushions for $15.00 each. You can have any 

of these items in any colour you wish. 

Everyone in our group would like to thank 

Board of Directors, Management and Staff 

for their help over the last year. We would 

like to wish all a Merry Christmas and a 

Happy New Year and a safe and healthy

In closing I would like to thank the girls in our 

group for a very productive year and hope

Sports Administrator’s Report 

As we go to print and you are reading 

this report, most of the Sporting bodies 

have already, or are completing their club 

championships. I have been closely following 

these competitions without the members 

knowing and have been informed of the 

closeness of the championships. 

It certainly shows the competitive nature of 

the sportsmen and women of Kingsgrove 

RSL Club. Even the outdoor lawn bowlers 

certainly are challenging in their games with 

other clubs. The losing team trophy between 

Ramsgate RSL and Kingsgrove is an under 

bed chamber. I think Kingsgrove have had 

the honour of this trophy a number of times. 

The Round Robin competition between the 

Club’s sporting bodies has been completed 

with the winner to be announced at the 

Stars Tribute Night, Saturday 1st December. 

Again, these competitions were very close 

during the year with some surprising results. 

I’m sure there are a number of members 

within Kingsgrove RSL who are sports 

minded but too shy to approach any of the 

sporting bodies. If you can play or even if 

you can’t play any these sports like Darts, 

Snooker, Golf, and Indoor Bowls or can 

catch a fish, it doesn’t matter; it’s the fun of 

participating with others. 

I’ve been saying these words for a long time 

- “If you can laugh at yourself whilst others 

laugh at you, you will enjoy yourself immensely”

Sub-Branch President’s Report 

With Christmas and New Year not far away, 

a time that we look forward to spending with 

our family and friends, I ask that you spare a 

thought and a prayer for all our Service men 

and women who are serving our country 

overseas and will be away from their families 

and friends and that they complete their 

tours safely and return home to their loved 

ones. 

On Sunday the 12th August we had a very 

memorable day, starting with a VP Day 

Commemoration Service, with the cadets 

from TS Sirius and 233 St George Regional 

Cadet Unit, providing the Catafalque Party 

and Guard, the Sutherland Shire Band 

provided the music and LTCOL Schon 

Condon RFD KCFJ inspected the guard and 

gave the VP Day Address. 

The Service was followed by a special 

luncheon to celebrate the 60th Anniversary 

of the Sub Branch 

being presented 

with the RSL 

Charter, there 

were a number 

of special guests 

including the State 

President of the 

NSW RSL Don 

Rowe OAM 

who during 

proceedings 

presented one of our hard working Sub 

Branch members Mike Skennar with an 

RSL Certificate of Appreciation for all his 

work with the Kingsgrove RSL Sub Branch, 

congratulations Mike on a well deserved 

award. The special celebratory cake was 

symbolically cut by two of our long time 

Life Members Arthur Millwood and Frank 

Newman. 

The day was indeed a very special occasion 

enjoyed by all those who attended, and 

I would like to thank Neil Arena and the 

Committee who put together this day and 

made sure it was such a success. Thanks also 

to Angus and the staff of the Fusion Brassiere 

for the high quality of the meals that were 

provided. 

A special thanks to the office staff in particular 

Debbie Harris, Sara Cheeseman and Karla 

Turnball who did so much work in preparing 

and printing programs, Order of Service, 

the special commemorative place mats and 

many other special things that all went to 

enhance the day. 

Our next Commemorative Service and 

Luncheon is Remembrance Day Sunday 11th 

November, we will be having the Cadets 

and also the Sutherland Shire Band who will 

provide the music for the service and also 

provide entertainment during the luncheon. 

Please ensure you book early. Unfortunately 

I will not be attending as I will be at a special 

Remembrance

who will be in Sydney celebrating a 45th 

Anniversary reunion.

offers its sympathy to their families and 

friends on their very sad loss.

Women’s Auxiliary Report 

Many thanks to all the people who attended 

our Crazy Whist Night, which was held in 

June. I know the weather was a bit chilly but 

it was nice and warm in the club. I’m sure all 

who attended had an enjoyable evening and 

everyone took home a small prize. 

July was an enjoyable month. The Women’s 

Auxiliary accepted an invitation from Bexley 

Auxiliary to a Christmas in July Luncheon. 

We had a lovely time being entertained with 

Christmas music and Carols and joining in 

a sing-a-long. Some of our members also 

attended a Christmas in July dinner at our club. 

In August we attended the Sub-Branch VP 

Luncheon that was also the 60th anniversary 

of the sub-branch. 

Many thanks to all who bought tickets in 

our Fathers’ Day Raffle that was drawn on 

August 31st 2012. ‘Thank you’ to the people 

who donated some of the prizes. 

The raffle was very successful, which I am 

sure in part is due to the display that was 

set up by Anne, from Waratah’s Florists at 

Earlwood. Congratulations to the winners.

Sports Reports 

FISHING REPORT 

Since the last report in the Burst, Mother Nature 

has been kind and fisho’s have managed to attend 

all outings so far. The Fishing Club hosted the final 

Round Robin event for 2012 from Botany Bay 

foreshores and only 1 solitary fish was caught on 

the day. Monte (representing Darties) enjoyed our 

company so much that he signed up and is now 

a financial member of the fishing club, looking 

forward to joining us along with partner Therese. 

A scheduled fishing outing on the same day as the 

Round Robin had 7kg of fish caught. 

A local outing held at Port Hacking on 28th 

July had more than 60 fish caught and due to 

increasingly bad weather conditions, the day 

finished earlier than expected. The Fishing club 

hosted a table of 16 members & guests for the 

KRSL Christmas in July function that same night; a 

couple of die-hard fisho’s attending the evening’s 

function after a long day on the waters. 

25th and 26th August at Shoalhaven Heads saw a 

large number of participants attending the event. 

Sunday turned out to be very cold & blustery 

and for safety reasons the day was called off; 

the weekend finishing earlier than anticipated. A 

further Shoalhaven Heads outing was held 22nd 

& 23rd September with 20 adults and 6 junior 

members utilizing 6 units. A variety of fish were 

caught including flathead, snapper, morwong and 

leatherjackets; land based fisho’s caught some nice 

luderick. There was a good gathering on Saturday 

night under the expert catering of Jim F. One 

question eludes me… who was the fisho with a 

huge hole in their landing net allowing their catch to 

literally “get away”? hmmmm. 

With only two more outings diarised for the year 

and points very closely contested by the top 3 

anglers, results will be interesting for the overall 

championship. 

Our annual presentation night will be held Saturday 

24th November at KRSL commencing at 7:00pm. 

For catering purposes, names of attendees must 

be received by committee members by 16th 

November 2012; pre-payment for the night is 

requested to be given to John Shaw by Saturday 

3rd November although monies can be paid on the 

night. A reminder that our Annual General Meeting 

will be held on Tuesday 4th December; all fishing 

club members are encouraged to attend.

Management and staff for all the assistance given 

throughout the year. I would also like to wish all

DARTS CLUB REPORT 

Hi Darties and Club Members 

With lucky Lynda being overseas for 6 weeks 

I have the pleasure of doing the last report for 

2012. The Round Robin night went very well and 

everyone enjoyed themselves. Our “Christmas In 

July” was a fun night with lots of laughter and with 

a Christmas door prize for a lady and a man. 

Our Darts Championships were held and finalised 

on Sunday 5th August with Morning Tea provided. 

Our new Club Champion is Olidia Viglino and we 

are very happy to have a Lady Champion at last. 

Congratulations Lidia well done. The other winners 

are as follows: Ladies Singles: Therese Bournes; Men’s 

Singles: Monty Kaihe; Ladies Doubles: Olidia Viglino 

& Yvonne Rackley; Men’s Doubles: Bruce Geerin & 

Harry Langstaff; Mixed Doubles: Isabella Bennett & 

Monty Kaihe. Congratulations to one and all. 

By the time you receive this report we will have 

had our Halloween “Fun” Night. Then our last 

night of Darts for the year is Friday 30th November 

when every Player receives a Christmas Hamper. 

Our “funniest night for the year” is the Christmas 

Presentation Dinner on Saturday 14th December. 

We begin Darts on Friday 11th January 2013 with 

our AGM on Friday 8th February 2013. 

On behalf of the Darts Club I would like to thank 

the following people for all their assistance during 

2012 – Alan Barnes, Ian Todd and all his Staff, Judy 

& Freddy and Fusion Brasserie. 

I would also like to wish everyone a Joyous Festive 

Season and hope 2013 is a healthier year.

the Sports Bar at 7.30pm and you don’t have to 

have played before as we have Players who are 

willing to help you.

Snooker REPORT 

The snooker Club Friday night competition has 

been going quite well in the last few months with 

4 new members joining Kingsgrove RSL and 

the Snooker Club. Friday night numbers have 

been very good and consistent, so those that are 

regularly turning up I thank you for your support. 

We have recently completed a new contract for the 

maintenance of the snooker tables at a significantly 

lower rate than was previously charged, thanks to 

Ali Ganji, Andrew Psalti and the committee for their 

efforts in achieving this. 

The A, B and C grade championship matches are 

drawing to a conclusion with only a few games left 

to play. The draw for the Doubles Handicap and the 

Seniors are up on the notice board so I urge all of you 

who want to play to put your names down soon. 

Bob Taffee has been in hospital for a few months 

now and seems to be making some good progress 

after loosing a lot of weight and hopefully will be 

out of hospital soon. We wish him a fast recovery 

and hope to see his smiling face and charisma back 

on a Friday night. 

I welcome all people to join us for Friday night 

competition which kicks off at 6pm, come along for 

a friendly and fun night for all.

BOWLS REPORT 

As we start the countdown to Christmas, we look 

forward to the Christmas festivities and Club functions. 

We have had a very successful year. With seven 

new members joining the Indoor Bowls Club which 

brings our membership tally to around twenty. 

The Singles Competition was won by Paul Pearson 

who only joined us this year. Runner-up was Noel 

Moreton who played well but was mastered by Paul. 

Just a few dates to put in your calendar: 

Bowls final night – 9th December 2012 

Presentation night – 12th December 2012 

Bowls resumes – 12th January 2013 

The Presentation night will be held in the Members 

Bar at 7pm. 

The Round Robin was, as always, a fun night and it is 

great to mingle with other sporting clubs, however 

there were a pair of hustlers from the Golf Club 

(namely Sarg and Tony) who hadn’t played before 

who gave Irene and myself a few bad moments. 

Thanks to all who represented the Indoor Bowls at 

other sports and a big thank you to all the other Clubs 

for competing but I am positive it is ours this year. 

We would be pleased to have anyone who is 

interested come and join us next year, cost is $5 

per year, which entitles you to the benefits of our 

special nights. We play Thursday nights at 7.30pm, 

so pop in and have a look but you must be very 

quiet and only a whisper. 

We are all very please to hear Val Shepherd is 

recovering well after her operation. At present two 

of our members are away overseas, Lynda Lake is 

flying around the Universe (she declined my offer of 

another bag) and Paul Pearson is in Hawaii. (Some 

guys go to great expense just to get a lei). 

As this is our last report for 2012 our thanks go to 

Club management for their assistance and Club 

Grants which provide our prizes, Bar and Kitchen 

staff for their cheerful service, to my committee for 

their help and input, to Irene for acting as Bowls 

organizer all year as well as Secretary Treasurer and 

especially our players who turn up each night and 

have fun. 

Finally, all the Bowlers wish fellow members and 

their families a healthy, wealthy and happy 2013.
