President’s Report
With 2012 year well under way and despite
the unseasonal summer, the club had a very
successful festive season with very popular
ham and sea food raffles prior to Christmas
and a great Australia Day celebration was
held at the club on the 26th January. This
was followed by the fantastic members draw
in February to win a trip to Las Vegas. The
club has many more exciting promotions
planned for the coming year as detailed in
this issue of the Burst.
I am very pleased to report that the club
made a net profit after tax of $306K, which
is up on last year and it was achieved during a
year of great financial uncertainty, once again
this result was achieved on the back of hard
work put in by the Board, General Manager
Ian Todd, the Managers, our dedicated staff
and of course the patronage of our members.
Unfortunately 2012 is not looking that bright
in regard to world financial markets and in
particular we are still facing the possibility of
the Government imposing regulations that
have the potential to impact considerably on
the clubs trading however the Board and the
Management team will be keeping abreast
of the developments to ensure we continue
to trade profitably and keep providing funds
for the various community groups we have
provided sponsorship to over many years.
I would take the opportunity to remind
members that the Annual General Meeting will
be held on Tuesday the 27th March at 7.00pm.
A note of caution must be made as there
are still a number of factors including the
slow growth of the economic recovery and
the expected tightening of Government
regulations concerning the playing of
poker machines that will potentially impact
on this year’s trade, this will require the
Management and staff to provide the
members with a venue that they find
attractive to visit.
As this is the first Burst of the year I would
like to take this opportunity to thank the
Board Members for their application in
making this club the success that it is and
strive to make continual improvement in
what the club provides to the members.
My sincere thanks to our General Manager
Ian Todd and his Management Team for their
great and untiring efforts during the year and
indeed all the staff who go about their duties
in a cheerful and helpful manner providing a
very high level of customer service to all our
members.
The Sub-Branch, Women’s Auxiliary and
the Kingsgrove RSL Community Group
have done a great job in looking after their
members and the Community in particular
the local nursing homes, sporting groups,
schools and hospitals to name a few who
benefited from their financial support.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and
myself our thanks to the members who
continue to support this great club, the
more you take advantage of the benefits
membership of Kingsgrove RSL brings, the
more benefits the club can make available to
you. Our success is yours, so we look forward
to seeing you at the club in the near future.
General Manager’s Report
The Club’s Annual Report for the year ending
31st December 2011 is now available on the
Club’s website or a copy of the concise or full
report is available by contacting the reception
or emailing the Club.
In a year of economic uncertainty and much
negativity for the Club industry I am pleased
to state your Club has made a net profit after
tax of $306K, this after providing $447K in
depreciation.
Our revenue increased by 3% but our
operating expenses increased by 7% and
financial costs were $290K.
However we were we able to reduce our
secured loan facility to $2.2M
The Club was able to provide many
improvements throughout the year but most
notable is the replacement of the poker
machine, lounge air conditioning, which will
provide better comfort for our members
and reduced running costs.
During the year the Board of Directors
engaged in the sale of three (3) of the
properties at Shoalhaven Heads. One
property, 1 Aspinall Street has been sold.
The two (2) vacant blocks remain up for sale.
The membership of the Club as at 31st
December 2011 increased by 3%
6549 members (199 Sub Branch)
3 Life Members
Total Membership 6552
Member equity has increased to $10.8M
Throughout any year we see many changes
in our employees and 2011 was no different
with both supervisors William McCartin
and John Head moving on, and long term
member of the management ranks Jason
Cheeseman taking his skills to another Club.
My sincere thanks to Club President Alan
Barnes and the Board of Directors for their
dedication and commitment. My Thanks to
my Management team Wayne McFayden,
Debbie Harris, Nick Papadatos, Brenden
Millard, Angelo Farinaro and Nuno Henriques
who have worked tirelessly to keep your club
entertaining and financially viable.
Thanks to all my staff from administration,
reception, bar, café, Kids Klub and cellar for
all their efforts throughout the year.
Special thanks to Freddy and Judy and their
lovely staff at the Kings Bistro; to Alan Whiting
our poker machine agent and David Bracey
our club accountant for their ongoing support.
It is also fitting to pay tribute to all the
volunteer committee members of the Sub
Branch, Women’s Auxiliary, Kingsgrove RSL
Club LTD Community Group and our in
house sporting clubs. Without their efforts
these inter club wouldn’t exist.
Finally my thanks to all the members for the
support and patronage of our Club, as you
are the people that make our Club.
Throughout 2011 we saw the retirement of
long time accountant Graeme Riekie. Known
too many members as their tax agent for
many years, but for me personally I thank
Graeme for his years of professionalism and
friendly advice.
It is with difficulty that I announce the
retirement of Freddy and Judy, the
Kingsgrove RSL Club caterers.
With their tireless efforts over the past 13
years they have provided an eating experience
second to none and have been a huge part of
our plans over the past decade. They leave
with our blessing and sincere thanks.
It is now our monumental task to find a
suitable replacement and we are requesting
your help by completing the survey and
returning it in the supplied self addressed
envelope.
Don’t forget to come and say good bye to
Freddy and Judy before they leave.
Poker Machine Reform
It seems the debate of Mandatory Pre-
Commitment has been erased recently and
rightly so considering the massive capital
outlay and unproven outcomes. We strongly
support a test of this technology before it is
discussed again.
But we need to be more proactive on
the front of gambling reforms and ensure
we have policies in place to create an
environment whereby patrons can gamble
responsibly.
Your Club has been a member of Clubsafe
for many years and provides access to selfexclusion
and counselling for all patrons who
need help.
There is no set recipe for minestrone, since
it is usually made out of whatever vegetables
are in season. It can be vegetarian, contain
meat or contain a meat-based broth. The
word “minestrone” has become a synonym
for ‘hodgepodge’.
The History of Minestrone Soup
Minestrone is one of the
cornerstones of Italian cuisine,
and is probable more widely
dispersed and eaten throughout
Italy than pasta.
Minestrone originally was a very humble dish
and was intended for everyday consumption,
being filling and cheap, and would likely have
been the main course of a meal. Minestrone
is part of what is known in Italy as cucina
povera (literally “poor kitchen”) meaning
poorer people’s cuisine.
Due to its unique origins and the absence of
a fixed recipe, minestrone is not particularly
similar across Italy: it varies depending
traditional cooking times, ingredients and
season. Minestrone ranges from a thick
and dense texture with very boiled-down
vegetables, to a more brothy soup with
large quantities of diced and lightly cooked
vegetables that may include meats.
Like many Italian dishes, minestrone was
probably originally not a dish made for its
own sake, though this point is argued. In
other words, whereas one might set about
killing a rabbit, with the intention of then
eating cooked rabbit, one did not gather the
ingredients of minestrone with the intention
of making minestrone. The ingredients were
pooled from ingredients of other dishes,
often side dishes or “contorni” plus whatever
was left over.
As eating habits and ingredients changed in
Italy, so did minestrone. The Roman army
is said to have marched on minestrone and
pasta fagioli (or beans and pasta), the former
making use of local and seasonal ingredients,
the latter due to the longevity of dried goods.
The History of
Minestrone
Soup
The introduction of new ingredients from
the Americas in the Middle Ages, including
tomatoes and potatoes, also changed the
soup to the point that tomatoes are now
considered a staple ingredient (though
the quantity used varies from northern to
southern Italy).
There are two schools of thought on when
the recipe for minestrone became more
formalized. One argues that in the 1600s
and 1700s minestrone emerged as a soup
using exclusively fresh vegetables and
was made for it own sake (meaning it no
longer relied on left-overs), while the other
school of thought argues that the dish had
always been prepared exclusively with fresh
vegetables for its own sake since pre-Roman
times, but the minestrone lost its meaning
10 THE BURST www.kingsgroversl.com.au

of being made with left-overs and came to
be associated with the dish in 18th and 19th
centuries. The earliest attestation of the
modern use of minestrone date to the 18th
and 19th centuries.
In the modern era, the ready availability and
long storage life of canned stocks and broths
means that minestrone is based on stock or
broth than water. The availability of newer,
more unusual vegetables from the Americas
(such as many varieties of squash) or Asia
means some minestrone now include not-
European vegetables.
There are three Italian words corresponding
to the English word ‘soup’: zuppa, which is
used in the sense of tomato soup, or fish
soup; minestra, which is used in the sense of
a more substantial soup such as a vegetable
soup, and also for ‘dry’ soups, namely pasta
dishes; and minestrone, which means a
very substantial or large soup, though the
meaning has now come to be associated
with this particular dish.
Minestrone Soup
Recipe
¼ cup olive oil
1 clove garlic minced
1 1 /3 cup coarsely chopped onion
1½ cup coarsely chopped celery & leaves
1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
1 cup sliced carrots
4 ¾ cups shredded cabbage
1 can tomatoes, diced
1 cup canned red kidney beans,
drained and rinsed
1 ½ cup frozen peas
1 ½ cup fresh green beans
1 can (50g) tomato paste
Dash of Tabasco sauce
11 cup water or stock (chicken or beef)
2 cup uncooked broken spaghetti
1. Heat oil in a 4 litre saucepan
2. Add garlic, onion and celery and sauté about 5 minutes
3. Add all remaining ingredients except spaghetti and stir
until ingredients are well mixed
4. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer about
45 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
5. Add uncooked spaghetti and simmer 2 – 3 minutes only.
Graeme
Many of you would know Graeme Riekie
many of the residents around Kingsgrove.
For over 30 years Graeme has also been
the accountant for the Kingsgrove RSL Club
whilst always acting in a most professional
manner but with a personal touch.
When Graeme first came to Kingsgrove
and through that association created a
sound knowledge of the Club industry.
Enjoying the Club side so much, Graeme
retained the Club’s when he sold his
business in the 1990’s so he could keep
some interest, he just could not retire.
Graeme and his wife Lynda have now
moved down the Coast and best wishes
are with them both as Graeme begins to
enjoy his golf, fishing and grand children.
Club farewells our
favourite Caterer
Good bye!
In June this year, Freddy and Judy Chung will be retiring as the
caterer for the Kingsgrove RSL Club.
For the past 13 years the husband and wife team have supplied
our Club, the Members and their Guests with the cuisine and
service of a quality and quantity that match any restaurant.
They gave new meaning to our function menus both Club &
private, with their food often being the envy of many visiting
Clubs.
It is with great sadness but with great blessing that we see both
Freddy and Judy enter the next stage of their life together, to enjoy
their ever growing family.
The partnership between us both has been a most fruitful one,
which has grown to a great friendship.
We are now faced with the daunting task of finding a new caterer,
not an easy task and Freddy and Judy will be hard to replace. For
this reason we have included a survey insert in this edition of the
Burst to get your valuable input in helping us find a new contract
caterer.
Women’s Auxiliary Report
Well here we are at the start of
another year. Where did 2011 go?
I hope you all had an enjoyable
Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Thank you to all who supported the raffles
during 2011, which the Auxiliary organised,
as we rely on these to raise funds that
we donate to various charities. These
included Christmas Parcels that were sent to
Afghanistan and distributed to the soldiers,
female, male and canine. Also thank you to
those who supported us by donating prizes
and members of the auxiliary who donated
their time selling raffle tickets.
Here are the results of the
Christmas raffle.
Congratulations to the winners. I hope you
all enjoyed your prizes.
The Women’s Auxiliary would be pleased to
welcome any women members of the club
who would like to join them to come along to
a meeting. We meet on the fourth Monday
of the month at 6.30pm, which is the same
evening that the Sub Branch has their meeting.
We will again be holding some Crazy
Whist nights this year. The dates are to be
announced. Please come and join in the fun.
On a sad note, Roseanna White, affectionately
known as “Ro”, passed away in December. Ro
had been an active member of the Auxiliary
before suffering from Motor Neuron Disease.
We will certainly miss her happy personality
and smile. Our condolences go to her husband
Paul and her family.
I should like to thank all members of the
auxiliary for their support this year, as well as
the hard working committee.
Pat Graham
President
C ommunity
Group
As we start off a new year I would like to
inform you that we lost one of our tireless
workers, Rosanna White, in December
2011. Our thoughts are with Paul and his
family at this time.
Another member from our group, Lyn
O’Hara, has moved up to the Central Coast
late last year. Lyn will still be knitting for us
and the group would like to thank her for
her leadership over the last six years and
wish her and Geoff all the best in their new
venture.
We were disappointed with the weather
cancelling the Fete as this is one of our big
fund raisers, so we will have to wait another
twelve months to sell our wares and hope
the weather is kind to us. As a result of this
we are hoping to receive more orders for
our rugs, beanies, scarfs and bears so if you
would like to place an order please do so at
reception and the staff will pass it on to us.
You can order them in any colour you wish.
Our Christmas bingo morning tea/lunch
went well and the people who attended
enjoyed their day. Everyone received a
present, even if they didn’t win at bingo.
We would like to thank the Club for their
support during 2011 as we put smiles on
faces during these days and also when we
deliver Easter eggs and Christmas presents
to the nursing homes throughout the year.
A big “THANK YOU” goes to all the people
who donated items to our group and also
giving us ideas to work on. We are working
on projects for 2012 and hope we have a
successful year once again.
Thank you to the ladies in the group for their
efforts during 2011 and hopefully we will be
kept busy this year as well.
If anyone would like to join our group, please
leave your name at reception and we will get
back to you. We meet every two months for
a discussion on our progress. Hope to see
you soon.
Sub-Branch President’s Report
What a change we have had this Christmas
New Year period weather wise, one of the
mildest and wettest summers we have had on
record, this shows what contrasting weather
patterns we have in this great country. As we
now move onto autumn we have April, with
that comes ANZAC Day and 2012 will be the
97th Anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.
Our ANZAC Day March will assemble in Shaw
Street near the Service Station at 6.45am.
We will march off at 7.00am led by the
Sutherland Shire Band to the Memorial Park
at the club, where the ANZAC Day Service
will be conducted. The cadets from the 233 St
George Regional Cadet Unit will provide the
march escort and the Catafalque Party.
During April we have a number of special events
in recognition of ANZAC Day; on Tuesday 3rd
April we have our school ANZAC Day Service,
this service is held at the club and is well worth
attending as the whole service is conducted
by representatives from a number of the local
schools. Saturday the 14th April is the clubs
very popular ANZAC Dinner, details are
provided in this issue of the Burst, I suggest you
book early as it is a very good night. Tuesday
the 24th April the Sub Branch Committee will
be busy conducting ANZAC Day services at a
number of our local nursing homes.
By the time you receive this edition of the
Burst we will have held the Sub-Branch
Annual General Meeting on the 27th
February, the results of the elections will be
posted on the Notice Board in the foyer.
Sunday 6th November we held our
Remembrance Day Service and we were
very pleased to have the Navy Cadets from
TS Sirius and the Army Cadets from the 233
St George Regional Cadet Unit making up
the Catafalque Party and Guard, the Address
was given by Lt Col. Schon Condon RFD ED
CO Royal Australian Artillery. Mrs. Shirley
Corney was our vocalist and she once again
led us in singing the hymns. A delightful lunch
with refreshments followed the service.
Sunday 6th May we will be holding our
Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration
Service, as this is the 70th Anniversary of
that significant battle and as such it will be
a special service. We will have the Officers
and Cadets from TS Sirius providing the
Catafalque Party and the Guard and
depending on their availability the Royal
Australian Navy Band will be coming, the
Service will commence at 10.45am. This is a
day that we recognize the significant role the
Royal Australian Navy played in the defence
of Australia in World War 2.
The TS Sirius staff and cadets will be
holding a full Naval Ceremonial Service and
Commemoration on Sunday 4th March
to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of
the sinking of the HMAS Yarra and HMAS
Perth, the service will commence at 1045am
followed by a luncheon, full details will be
displayed on the club notice board.
I would like to give early notice of our VP
Day Service and luncheon on Sunday 12th
August, this will be a very special occasion as
we will also be marking the 60th Anniversary
of the formation of the Kingsgrove RSL
Sub Branch. Neil Arena is heading up the
Committee that is tasked with making this a
very memorable day.
Being the first edition of the Burst for 2012
I will take the opportunity to thank our
hard working Secretary John Graham who
has does a tremendous job ensuring the
Sub Branch runs efficiently, thanks John.
Peter Lyle our very professional Treasurer
deserves special thanks for all the work he
does in managing
and reporting on
the Sub-Branch
finances. Peter is
also handling the
role of Welfare
Officer and he is
doing a great job
in looking after members interests with the
Department of Veteran Affairs
Vice President Neil Arena does a great job
and is always willing to deputise for me
when I am not available at meetings and
functions. As our Hospital Visitation Officers
we are indeed very fortunate to have the
services of Peter Pezzutti who has made
the lives of many our members that much
brighter although not well himself Peter has
continued to do a great job, thanks Peter.
To all the other Committee Members who
give so freely of their own time to attend
members funerals, officiating or assisting
with the RSL Service, visiting local schools,
nursing homes and the many other functions
and meetings that occur during the year,
thanks for all your help.
The Women’s Auxiliary had a very successful
year in 2011 raising much needed funds for
the various charities that we support, the
ladies do a great job organizing and serving
the ANZAC Day breakfast and the selling of
raffle tickets, this is an essential part of what
the RSL is all about.
easy things you didn’t do when you
should have.”
President
Sports Administrator’s Report
Here we are into 2012 already with January
and February already passed. The Champions
of the Sporting Clubs were presented with
their trophies at the Presidents and Directors
night just before Christmas last year. This night
was a roaring success.
So far the Fishing Club has committed their
Annual General Meeting, with Graham
Evans now elected as their President. More
Fishing personnel (preferably with boats if
they have them of course) are welcome to
join the Fishing Club.
The first day of the Golf Club for 2012 was
held at Bardwell Valley, and kinda turned into
a swimming carnival unfortunately. After the
game all returned back to Kingsgrove RSL for
a well earned hamburger a few quenching
drinks and for the Annual General Meeting.
Graham (Sarge) Sheary was re-elected for
another year as President. They had three
new members joining them that day.
The Snooker Club’s Annual General Meeting
was scheduled for the 3rd February, with
the Dart’s Club scheduled for the 10th
February. The Indoor Bowl’s Club AGM is
also scheduled for the 16th February. More
news to come.
The Sporting Clubs bring a lot of
camaraderie to their individual sports and
invite all members of Kingsgrove RSL Club
to their outings. The Snooker Club meets
on a Friday evening in the Members Bar for
a night of snooker. The Darties meet on a
Friday night in the Members bar for a night
of spear throwing and much frivolity. The
Indoor Bowls meet on a Thursday night in
the main auditorium with also much laughter.
The Fishos, well they travel to Shoalhaven
Heads for a weekend of teaching a worm to
swim, and also in Botany bay, or wherever
they find water. The Golfers play at least once
a month on the best manicured Golf courses
(Hic, Hic) in Sydney, namely “ROYAL” Bardwell
Valley, Kogarah, and all over the place.
If you have that urge to participate in any of
the Club’s sporting outings give your name
to the Receptionist who in turn will pass
onto the respective sporting body for follow
up and invitation to join.
Have fun while you play everyone
Fishing Report
Here it is, the start of another year; how quickly
Christmas and New Year holidays have passed
and activities for 2012 have commenced.
Our final outing for 2011 was held at Shoalhaven
Heads and a great turnout of participants as usual,
staying at the Club’s units. It was a closely fought
competition and this last outing had Peter Plunkett
clinching the championship and awarded his
“winners jacket” at the Galaxy night.
Our Presentation night was held 26th November;
a number of trophies were handed out along with
some “funny awards” given. Louise Pettit was
awarded a Life Membership to the Fishing Club
which was very special and well received.
Our Annual General Meeting was held Tuesday
7th December. Previous committee members
stood down and a new committee elected;
congratulations to those elected, particularly our
new President Graham Evans; Vice President
Peter Plunkett and Secretary/Treasurer John
Shaw. Thank you in advance to all committee
members, for the many hours of work ahead.
Our first outing for 2011 will be 28th January
from Botany Bay waters and the weigh-in (for
probably a few to gloat) at 3:00pm at Moore’s
Park Reserve, Oatley. Future dates to mark in your
calendars are:
– 18th & 19th February
Shoalhaven Heads
– 24th March
Port Hacking
– 28th April
Darts Club Report
Another year has started and we all hope to have
a happy and healthy year. We ended last year
with our Christmas party in December, which
was well attended, and fun was had by all. There
were a lot of raffle prizes to be won and a few
surprise “FUN” awards as well. All the recipients
who received them accepted the gifts with great
humour as it was intended.
Why don’t you come and join us on a Friday night
down in the Sports Bar at 7.30pm, where we have
“Theme and Fun” nights during the year, “Birthday”
surprises and “Lucky Door” draws once a month. You
would also be able to join in our “Championship” days
and our “Round Robin” night where all the sporting
groups compete for a trophy at the end of the year.
The Darts Club won it in 2011.
If you would like to join our Darts Club, and bring
children over the age of 12 with you, they are
most welcome. We would only be too happy to
have them along and join in our activities. You
don’t have to know how to play, we can teach you
while you are playing. Please feel free to join us as
we will certainly welcome you into our club.
On a sadder note I would like to inform you
that we lost one of our members in December,
Rosanna White, to motor neurone disease. Our
thoughts are with Paul and his family at this time.
In closing we wish everyone a happy and safe
Easter and hope the Easter Bunny is kind to you all.
Lynda Lake
all the best in the defence of the trophy for 2012.
Our AGM is set down for February 3, hoping
some new committee members will come on
board to drive the club along. To be a part of
the snooker club, come along to Friday’s social
