“You come from a family steeped in traditional
tailoring and millinery. How do you feel this
has affected your design style?”
My mum was a wedding dress designer and was
always busy cutting and sewing at the family home.
From an early age I realised I had the ability to work
with fabric and patterns and I made sure I didn’t waste
it. This didn’t really shape my style only my ability
“What other major influences have shaped
the Luke brand?”
Understanding who the wearer is has been key to the
brand development. My mates and all the people
I used to go out clubbing etc with have had a major
influence as I used to make shirts for them and things
just grew from there.
“The new denim line is particularly impressive
this season... what are the hallmarks of a great
pair of jeans in your opinion?”
Great detail and natural washes. Fits are also very
important. I’m really happy with the latest washes
we have developed, they are going from strength to
strength. My favourites are the raw selvage denim from
our premium range that are stiff as a board to start with,
then over time they take on the natural wear and tear of
the way you live. Wash them every 6 months and they
look superb!!
“Other than Luke what brands do you wear
on a regular basis? How would you describe
your look?”
I never wear other brands apart from boxers, but we are
working on a great underwear range for this Christmas.
I definitely have more than one look though, I love the
grown up football casual look we nail in the LUKE
range, but on a night out I get the slim leg raw selvage
denim out with a crisp shirt
“We’ve heard a rumour that you were struck
by lightning? Is this true...”
Ha-ha-ha, yes! June 10th 1993. I’ve never been right
since!! Statistically you have more chance of winning
the lottery but I still have a go!
“Terrace culture has obviously helped shape
the brand identity... do you feel that films such
as The Firm risk glamorising a rather unsavoury
period in pop culture?”
I love that era and I love terrace culture…no comment!
“As a Birmingham resident we assume you’re
a die-hard Blues fan? Are you happy McLeish
has spend 1million on Barry Ferguson?”
There are four brothers in my family, two Blues & two
Villa. I’m Villa but fair play to City they are having a top
season. I love the build up to the local Derbys
“What are your style tips for S/S 2010”
Don’t be afraid to get involved with colour: cyan, flame
orange and lemon yellow will all make you stand out
from the crowd!
“Who are your style icons?”
WIN,WIN,WIN
It’s got to be Ray Winston, top Geezer
“What CD’s are on heavy rotation
in the Luke office”
“Xileclothing.com have teamed up with Luke to offer one lucky reader
the opportunity to win a Williams Polo signed by Luke’s head honcho
Luke Roper. To be in with a chance to win email
competitions@xileclothing.com with your full name and address.”
A real mix to be honest, Kasabians latest album has had
a real hammering but we do like some older music like
Talking Heads and lads classics like Oasis. I like eclectic
albums like Late Night Tales that have all sorts on them.
“Describe your ideal night out... what are you
wearing/drinking? where are you going?”
I do enjoy a Saturday at the game washed down with
a few beers. On the other hand I love a (slightly) more
civilised night out with my Wife and friends. The trick is
to know the balance! (so the Wife keeps saying!)
