ATHLETICS AT W&L
Washington and Lee University provides
its students with a unique athletic program
that allows them to pursue athletic excellence
without sacrificing their educational
experience.
W&L follows the NCAA Division III
guidelines of awarding financial aid based
only on family need and academic merit. The
result is a strong, diverse program in which
participants are motivated by their love of
the game and their desire to excel.
Over the years W&L students have been
2006-07 SEASON PREVIEW
Entering his seventh spring as the head
men's tennis coach at Washington and Lee,
David Detwiler doesn't take long to reflect
on his goals for the program -- because
they remain unchanged since the moment
he took over the program.
Detwiler expects his team to compete
for a conference title, rank among the top
teams in Division III men's tennis and make
it to the NCAA Regionals with the ultimate
goal of finishing among the Top 8 teams
at the NCAA National Championships.
As Detwiler prepares his team to meet
those expectations during the 2007 campaign,
he also doesn't take much time to
reflect on prior accomplishments -- they
have nothing to do with how this year's team will achieve its goals. They do, however,
give a little insight into his current team's level of experience.
The Generals graduated five senior players from last season, including All-
American David Shay. Again, Detwiler is undeterred because he knows there is
more to winning than individual talent.
"We have one senior in the Top 8 players and not nearly as much experience
as last season, but I feel like we're playing more like a team," he remarked. "This
is a close group of players and they push each other to be better players. They hit
on off days and are generally willing to do more than is asked in order to improve."
Shay's graduation left a noticeable gap at No. 1 singles, but Detwiler believes
that junior Tim Ross is up to the challenge. Ross posted a team-best 18-6 singles
record while playing primarily at No. 5 singles last season. He enters this spring
ranked 22nd in the Atlantic South Region.
"Tim worked really hard over the summer and it shows," noted Detwiler. "He
is one of our fittest players and he has been a nice surprise this year. He competed
well at the fall regionals and is holding his own at No. 1 -- he has a lot of determination."
As usual, Detwiler uses challenge matches to determine player positions and
all six singles spots are up for grabs, including Ross' No. 1 slot. Senior Jon Malooly,
juniors Nat Estes, Seth Feibelman, Stuart Sanford and Nelson Bunn, sophomore
Jamie McCardell and freshman Brent Meyers will all be battling for the top singles
positions.
A senior captain, Malooly has seen the most action of any player, but has had
to battle through injuries, most notably last season when he missed much of the
spring with a knee injury. An All-ODAC honoree as a freshman, Malooly has notched
a 36-25 overall singles record and has knocked off two regional singles champions
during his first three seasons.
"Jon is the only senior among the top eight and he is our most experienced
player," said Detwiler. "He is a solid baseliner and he has added a transition game.
If he can be more effective with his first serve, I expect him to have a fine season."
Estes was injured for much of his freshman season, but he recovered last
season to post a 12-7 singles record and earn All-ODAC honors at No. 2 singles. He
was named a captain this season and enters the spring ranked 23rd in the Atlantic
South Region. Detwiler looks for him to continue to improve as a player and team
leader.
"Nat is one of the most talented athletes on the team and he can hit any shot,"
he said. "He is exciting to watch as an all-court player."
2

GENERALS TENNIS
Feibelman garnered All-ODAC honors at No. 3 singles a season ago. He
went 12-10 in singles last season and enters this spring with a 25-16 career singles
mark.
"Seth is a smart player who is not going to beat himself," remarked Detwiler.
"He is an all-court player who will make you work for every point."
Sanford is the lone returning player to have earned All-ODAC honors in doubles
last season. He teamed with Shay to garner All-ODAC laurels at No. 3 doubles last
spring and has consistently ranked among the team's Top 8 singles players during
his first two seasons.
"If he's on, Stu can play with anyone in the country," said Detwiler of Sanford's
game. "He can hit a winner from anywhere on the court with a big forehand. He is
an excellent doubles player, but also is a nice addition to the singles lineup."
Bunn is another solid all-around player who can give W&L a lift in singles
or doubles. He carries a 16-5 career singles record and an 11-9 career doubles
mark.
"Nelson is an all-court player who has incorporated the net game into his
repertoire as he tries to be more aggressive," said Detwiler. "He comes from a great
high school program and he is an intelligent player."
McCardell notched a 5-5 record at a variety of singles positions last season
and teamed with Bunn at a variety of doubles positions. With a year under his belt,
Detwiler believes that he is ready to be among the top six singles positions this
season.
"Jamie is a fine athlete and has prior experience of having played soccer,"
noted Detwiler. "He is one of our quickest players, has an excellent forehand and
serve, and has really improved his doubles game."
Detwiler also expects
Meyers to be among the
Generals' top singles and
doubles players when healthy.
He has been battling through
injuries all season, but still
ranks among the team's top
players.
"Early on, he was among
our Top 4 in the challenge
matches," said Detwiler of
Meyers. "He is an intelligent
player with an excellent serve
and a solid all-around game.
His father played No. 1 at Duke
and Brent has inherited that
talent."
As for doubles, Detwiler
feels confident that he has his
top two teams decided. Ross
and Estes will team up at No.
1 doubles, while Malooly and
McCardell will comprise the
No. 2 doubles team. Any
combination of Bunn, Feibelman
and Sanford are likely to be in the mix at No. 3 doubles.
"I feel like we have a team that is good enough to rank somewhere between
12th and 15th in the country," said Detwiler. "We are going to play some tough
competition along the way and we'll see how it all plays out."
DAVID DETWILER, HEAD COACH
David Detwiler is in his seventh season
as the head men's tennis coach at Washington
and Lee University.
Additionally, Detwiler also serves as the
Director of W&L's Duchossois Tennis Center.
Detwiler's first six seasons rank among the
finest of any coach in the program's history as he
has logged an 86-38 (.694) overall record, won
six-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference
Championships and has guided the Generals to
six consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament
berths. His teams have also been ranked in
the Top 20 nationally for much of his tenure
and enters this spring ranked 20th overall.
Last season, Detwiler guided the Generals to a 13-9 overall record and a No.
23 ranking in the final ITA Division III poll. His 2005 team posted a 16-6 overall
record and a No. 12 ranking in the final poll. Detwiler also steered W&L to a 16-8
mark and a No. 10 final ranking during the 2004 season.
Prior to taking over as the head coach, Detwiler was the program's assistant
coach for one season under Gary Franke. In addition, he also served as an assistant
coach for the W&L women's tennis team for three seasons, helping the Generals
to three-straight appearances in the NCAA Division III National Championships.
Well respected in the tennis coaching profession, Detwiler was presented with
the 2003 USTA/ITA Community Service Award for the Mid-Atlantic Region for his
work with the Lexington and W&L Communities through the Duchossois Tennis
Center.
Before arriving in Lexington, Detwiler spent eight years as the Tennis Director
at Shadow Oaks Racquet Club in Greenville, S.C.
Detwiler is a 1988 graduate of Furman University, where he was a four-year
letterwinner for the men's tennis team. He served as team captain and was named
the team MVP as a senior.
Detwiler won two Southern Conference singles titles and three Southern Conference
doubles titles, while helping the Paladins to a pair of league championships.
He also won the USTA National 25-and-under clay court doubles championship in
1993.
Detwiler and his wife, Alison, make their home in Lexington.
GENERALS TENNIS
TENNIS FACILITIES
Upper Level Outdoor Courts
Washington and Lee boasts one of the finest tennis complexes in the nation with
the addition of the Duchossois Tennis Center in 1997. The facility is named in honor of
Richard Duchossois, Class of 1944, who donated the money in honor of former school
president Dr. John D. Wilson who retired in 1995.
The Duchossois Tennis Center is a magnificent four-court indoor complex with a
spacious spectator gallery overlooking all four courts, team locker rooms and players’
lounges. The entrance to the facility includes a dramatic gatehouse, an architectural element
consistent with two of the other newest buildings on campus and the lobby features
oak flooring throughout.
W&L also has a 14-court outdoor complex located above and below Wilson Field,
the University’s main athletic stadium. The complex, which was resurfaced in the summer
of 2003, has eight courts on the upper level behind the stadium and six courts located
on the lower level beneath the historic footbridge. The men play most of their matches
on the upper courts.
The facility hosted the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships in 1985, 1988
and 1997 and has played host to numerous other collegiate and local tournaments through
the years. W&L also hosted the 1998 NCAA Division III women’s championship.
ABOUT W&L
WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVER-
SITY — a small, private, liberal
arts college, is the ninth oldest
institution of higher education in
America. Founded in 1749, W&L
prides itself on the characteristics
that have earned its reputation as
a place unique and apart in the
national educational scene.
The school’s name comes from
two of America’s great leaders
who saved W&L in times of need.
George Washington saved then
Liberty Hall Academy from financial
ruin in 1796 when he gave the
school its first major endowment
gift—$50,000 worth of James River
Canal stock. The donation—at
the time the largest to any educational institution—continues today as part of the
endowment.
Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil
War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and
instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation’s first school of journalism,
and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life.
More than 95 percent of W&L’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or
other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with
an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise.
W&L was ranked 14th in the 2006 U.S. News listing of the nation's top liberal
arts colleges, marking the 18th consecutive year that W&L has been ranked as one
of the top 25 liberal arts colleges in the nation.
W&L also features a highly-ranked School of Law that has been an integral part
of the school since 1866. Approximately 120 students receive Juris Doctor degrees
each year and five Master of Laws.
With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from
50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college
town. USA Today described it this way: “If you close your eyes and conjure up the
ideal campus—red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons
beneath the arching branches of ivy-covered trees, a small town of 19th-century
storefronts—you’ve got Washington and Lee.”
Washington and Lee University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color,
religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran's
status in its educational programs and activities or with regard to employment.
