2008 SEASON PREVIEW
Changes abound with the Washington
and Lee women's tennis program
that won last year's national title. After
the retirement of 2007 National Coach
of the Year Cinda Rankin after 21 seasons
and the loss of three All-America
players, the 2008 squad has a very
different feel.
Following in the footsteps of Rankin
and with onus on repeating a title run, it
might seem like the pressure is resting
on the shoulders of Head Coach Eric
Ishida and his 2008 squad -- but, that's
not the perspective that Ishida is taking
into the season.
"Each day, each practice, each
match, we focus on being the best team
we can be," he noted. "We can't afford
to think about last season -- we have to think about this season. So far, we had a very
successful fall season. We want to carry that momentum into the spring."
To help enforce and disseminate the "one day at a time mantra," Ishida is counting on
his six seniors -- Lauren Cook, Katie Duncan, Rhodes Proctor, Rebecca Timmis, Leah
Weston and Kelly Will -- to set an example both on and off the court.
"My expectations for the seniors are high," noted Ishida. "I expect them to use their
conference and national experience to lead the younger players. Their work ethic, as a
unit, is unparalleled and you can tell they are focused."
While this is a senior-laden squad, two of the three top three singles spots will likely
be owned by underclassmen this year. Junior Katie Tabb has secured the Generals' top
singles spot after a tremendous fall campaign, winning the ITA South/Southeast Regional
and finishing fifth at the ITA National Small College Championships. She also earned
All-ODAC honors at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles last year.
"Tabb has stepped up to be one of the best players in the country," Ishida said. "And
I don't want to put any limits on what she could do. She has the talent, ability, work ethic
and confidence to be a phenomenal player."
Sophomore Lauren Caire and Will will share duties at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Caire's
fall was only marred by a loss to Tabb in the finals of the ITA South Regional Championships.
She was also an all-conference selection at No. 6 singles last spring.
"Caire is also a very talented played," mused Ishida. "When she pairs with Tabb at
doubles, they might be one of the top doubles tandems in the nation. They both have
the ability to hit big shot after big shot and could be very hard to beat."
Will's only loss of the fall was also to Tabb in the semifinals of the regional ITA tournament.
In 2007, Will earned all-conference honors at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles,
while also registering a team-best 20-5 singles record.
"Will is focused, hard-working and has a tenacious baseline game," remarked Ishida.
"She has a deceptive game and is a crafty player. Not only is she very talented, she also
leads by example and works hard every minute she is on the court."
Tabb, Caire and Will have all but secured their positions in the Top 8, but Ishida sees
some flux and a bevy of combinations for the bottom of the line-up.
Seniors Weston and Timmis, junior Meg Spalitta and sophomores Katie Bouret, Blair
Brzeski and Katie Harris and newcomers Catherine Reed and Virginia Dickinson, are all
possibilities for the Top 8.
2
GENERALS TENNIS
Weston, a three-year letterwinner and a team captain, is ready to add to her five allconference
citations.
"She is playing better than ever," said Ishida of Weston. "Leah is also a terrific role
model and a leader for this team. She epitomizes the role of a captain."
Another senior, Timmis, will also vie for one of the top singles spots, and could likely
play at No. 5. Timmis earned All-ODAC honors last year while playing with Weston at
No. 3 doubles.
"Rebecca worked harder than anyone coming into preseason," Ishida mentioned,
"She's been on the bubble of the Top 8 in the past, but it seems like now that she's a
senior, she's ready to own a top spot."
Spalitta, Bouret, Harris and Brzeski also will compete for a coveted spot in the Top 8
and Ishida thinks all of them have the potential to break into the lineup.
"I expect Spalitta and Bouret to constantly challenge for a spot in the Top 6 and I think
Blair and Harris could also move up in the lineup and will push all the players ahead
of them," reflected Ishida. "It's great to have so much equality, parity and talent on the
team."
Newcomers Reed and Dickinson will also contribute and compete to play in the Top 8.
According to already given the team an emotional boost, not to mention are solid players
with quality high school backgrounds.
"Catherine and Virginia have worked hard to break into the Top 8 this fall," noted
Ishida. "They also have a good energy -- a certain spunk -- and their enthusiasm has
been contagious."
The depth and experience of the team is certainly a strength Ishida will try to exploit
and capitalize on. The team's schedule is another aspect that Ishida hopes will work in
their favor.
The Generals defeated then 19th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 5-4, in a dual match this
fall and will take on Emory and Denison during the traditional spring season. They also
have annually-ranked teams Gustavus Adolphus, Wellesley, Williams, Claremont-Mudd-
Scripps and Skidmore coming to Lexington for the Fab Five Tournament.
"Playing so many elite teams in a short number of days can really help us replicate
playing at nationals," noted Ishida. "The Fab Five will be a real test of our team's ability
and character."
Ishida hopes that the tough schedule, coupled with the team's experience, depth and
chemistry will help them continue the tradition of excellence associated with Washington
and Lee women's tennis.
"I really think we are doing the right things to get to where we need to be in the spring,"
said Ishida. "If things continue to fall into place, this could be another exciting season."
GENERALS TENNIS
W&L TENNIS FACILITIES
Lower Level Outdoor Courts
Washington and Lee boasts one of the finest tennis complexes in the nation
with the addition of the Duchossois Tennis Center. The facility is named in honor
of Richard Duchossois, Class of 1944, who donated the money in honor of former
University president Dr. John D. Wilson who retired in 1995.
The Duchossois Tennis Center is a magnificent four-court indoor complex
with a spacious spectator gallery overlooking all four courts, team locker rooms
and player’s lounges. The entrance to the facility includes a dramatic gatehouse, an
architectural element consistent with two of the other newest buildings on campus,
and the lobby features oak flooring throughout.
W&L also has a 14-court outdoor complex located above and below Wilson
Field, the University’s main athletic stadium. The complex has eight courts on the
upper level behind the stadium and six courts located on the lower level beneath
the historic Washington and Lee footbridge.
The facility served as host for the 1998 NCAA Division III Women's National
Championships and has also hosted the NCAA Division III Men’s Championships in
1985, 1988, and 1997, along with numerous other collegiate and local tournaments
through the years.
GENERALS TENNIS
ABOUT W&L
WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVER-
SITY — a small, private, liberal
arts college, is the ninth oldest
institution of higher education in
America. Founded in 1749, W&L
prides itself on the characteristics
that have earned its reputation as
a place unique and apart in the
national educational scene.
The school’s name comes from
two of America’s great leaders
who saved W&L in times of need.
George Washington saved then
Liberty Hall Academy from financial
ruin in 1796 when he gave the
school its first major endowment
gift—$20,000 worth of James River
Canal stock. The donation—at
the time the largest to any educational institution—continues today as part of the
endowment.
Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil
War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and
instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation’s first school of journalism,
and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life.
More than 95 percent of W&L’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or
other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with
an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise.
W&L was ranked 17th in the 2007 U.S. News listing of the nation's top liberal
arts colleges, marking the 19th consecutive year that W&L has been ranked as one
of the top 25 liberal arts colleges in the nation.
W&L also features a highly-ranked School of Law that has been an integral part
of the school since 1866. Approximately 120 students receive Juris Doctor degrees
each year and five receive Master of Laws.
With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from
50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college
town. USA Today described it this way: “If you close your eyes and conjure up the
ideal campus—red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons
beneath the arching branches of ivy-covered trees, a small town of 19th-century
storefronts—you’ve got Washington and Lee.”
Washington and Lee University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color,
religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran's
status in its educational programs and activities or with regard to employment.
Undergraduate student inquiries about this policy should be directed to the Dean of
Students Affairs, Elrod University Commons, (540) 458-8751, law student inquiries to
the Associate Dean for Student Services, (540) 458-8533, and employment inquiries
to the Director of Human Resources, Howard House, (540) 458-8920, Washington
and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia 24450-2116.
