ATHLETICS AT W&L<br />
<strong>Washington</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
provides its students with a unique athletic<br />
program that allows them to pursue<br />
athletic excellence without sacrificing<br />
their educational experience.<br />
W&L follows the NCAA Division<br />
III guidelines of awarding financial<br />
aid based only on family need <strong>and</strong><br />
academic merit. The result is a strong,<br />
diverse program in which participants<br />
are motivated by their love of the game<br />
<strong>and</strong> their desire to excel.<br />
Over the years W&L students<br />
have been impressive on <strong>and</strong> off the<br />
playing fields. A capsule sketch of that<br />
success is listed below:<br />
THE SCHOOL<br />
• Located in historic Lexington, Virginia in the Shen<strong>and</strong>oah Valley<br />
• Founded in 1749 <strong>and</strong> is the ninth oldest college in America<br />
• Has an undergraduate enrollment of 1,760 students <strong>and</strong> a law school with 400 students<br />
• The average class size is just 16 students<br />
• The tuition fee for 2007-08 is $34,650<br />
• The early decision application deadlines are November 15 <strong>and</strong> January 1, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
regular application deadline is January 15<br />
THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM<br />
• W&L sponsors 23 varsity sports, 12 for men <strong>and</strong> 11 for women<br />
• All sports compete at the NCAA Division III level <strong>and</strong> the majority of teams compete in<br />
the Old Dominion Athletic Conference<br />
• W&L has won the ODAC Commissioner's Cup for overall excellence in men's <strong>and</strong><br />
women's athletics 11 of the last 13 years<br />
• In 2006-2007, W&L won 71 percent of its contests <strong>and</strong> eight conference championships<br />
• Seventy-two athletes earned first team all-conference honors last season <strong>and</strong> 15 were<br />
named All-Americans<br />
• 213 athletes were named to receive Scholar-Athlete Awards for achieving at least a<br />
3.500 grade point average in a term last school year<br />
• Since 1970, W&L has had 26 athletes earn prestigious NCAA Postgraduate scholarships<br />
• In the last 32 years, W&L has had 42 athletes earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors<br />
<strong>and</strong> countless others have been named to CoSIDA Academic All-District teams<br />
THE WOMEN'S <strong>TENNIS</strong> PROGRAM<br />
• <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Lee</strong> claims one of the elite Division III women's tennis programs. The<br />
team won the 2007 National Championship, defeating Amherst, 5-2, <strong>and</strong> has competed<br />
in the NCAA's 14-straight years<br />
• Two W&L players have been finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Erika<br />
Proko '03 was a finalist in 2003 <strong>and</strong> Lindsay Hagerman '05 was a finalist in 2005<br />
• Recently, two W&L players have won NCAA Division III singles championships. Lindsay<br />
Hagerman '05 won the 2005 title, while Emily Applegate '07 won the crown in 2006.<br />
