Happy Birthday!
On 11 April 1900, the United States Navy purchased the
Type VI Holland Diving Boat. They christened it the USS
Holland (SS 1) and it became the Navy’s first submarine.
USS HOLLAND (SS 1)
I think that’s’ Chief O’Hara up front
John Philip Holland’s vision was of a submarine fleet
which could act, in today’s language, as a deterrent and
he consistently proclaimed that submarines would
actually prevent war.
When the Navy announced a $200,000 competition to
build a submarine, Holland, who had been designing
submarines for many years, entered his drawings in the
competition and set up the John P Holland Torpedo
Boat Company.
On 13 March 1895, the $200,000 contract for Holland’s
patented design was signed and the government elected
to call it the Plunger. The contract’s ambitious speed
and endurance requirements dictated that the steam
plant and the electric motor be huge, making the boat
very large (and very hot for a crew). From the start,
Holland predicted, to himself, that the Plunger would
fail. Government and financial pressure, however, had
forced Holland to embark on the Plunger against his
own better judgment.
During construction of the Plunger, Holland had
convinced his board and backers to finance another
submarine, built entirely to his own specifications,
which could be sold to markets other than just the
United States Government. That plan worked out
because the Plunger was launched in 1897, but the navy
stopped the trials and shifted their interest to the new
Holland VI instead.
The Holland VI turned out to be as near perfect as the
times would allow. But, on the night of 13 October
1897, a worker left a valve open while the boat was still
in the slip. At high tide, water flooded the boat. After
the water was pumped out, all the electrical equipment
was grounded and they could not get enough heat to
them to dry them out. Consequently, short of cutting
the boat open and ripping out all the electrical
equipment, the John P Holland Torpedo Boat Company
could not fix the problem. Fortunately, the accident
brought to the stage a clever young electrician by the
name of Frank T. Cable, on loan from the Electro-
Dynamic Company of Philadelphia. Unencumbered by
rules or red tape, that has never since been equaled, he
simply reversed the current in the field circuits,
neglecting all principles of recognized electrical motor
management, and soon the wiring generated ample heat
to dry out the circuits.
On 17 March 1898, Holland VI made its first successful
dive underway off Staten Island and on Sunday, 27
March 1898, the Navy Department witnessed, to their
complete satisfaction, the formal trials. On 10 April
1898 the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore
Roosevelt, wrote to the Secretary of the Navy saying
that he thought the Holland submarine boat should be
purchased.
It took another year for the navy to train men, test the
boat, and demand modification after modification.
Some were sound, but most just delayed delivery.
During this time, due to financial problems, the Electric
Boat Company absorbed the Holland Torpedo Boat
Company. They soon also swallowed up other
companies, including the Electro-Dynamic Company of
Philadelphia. Even after being in the US more than 30
years, Holland, an Irishman, was no match for the
acumen of American businessmen and was slowly and
steadily being eased out of what was becoming a very
powerful concern. He had lost extensive foreign patent
rights to the composite company and his status in the
new firm was considerably diminished. By the time of
the final trails, Holland was little more than a bystander.
On 11 April 1900, Holland VI was bought for the
United States Navy amidst headlines describing her as
‘the Monster War Fish’, ‘Uncle Sam’s Devil of the
Deep’ and ‘The Navy Hell Diver’. As other navies of
the world paid close attention to these proceedings and
the ranting of the press, Holland VI took her place in
the United States Navy as the USS Holland (SS-1).
The original contract for the Plunger was cancelled on
19 November 1900. On 1 February 1902 it was
launched, by name only, as Plunger (SS-1), but
subsequently designated A1. It was commissioned on
19 September 1903 and used mainly for trials and
training for the duration of her short career.
With all that Holland contributed to the beginnings of
the submarine success, his salary never rose above $90
per week, and by the time he left the company in 1904
at the age of 63, he held no more than one half of one
per cent of the company’s share value. So, on April the
11 th , when you’re celebrating the birth of our submarine
force, say a quiet little thank you to John P. Holland.
FROM THE CREW
Haddo Memories:
from Ray Butters
As I was going through the new names on the roster, I
came across one name, David Lee Denny, that brought
back some fond memories. He was a first class ST and
hours of the morning, I got up from the couch, casually
walked across the room to the bathroom, gave up a big
heave into the commode, and returned to the couch with
practically no interruption in our conversation. That
was the first time in my memory that I had ever up
chucked. I did it one more time and coincidently it was
aboard Haddo also. But that’s another story.
was already onboard when I got there in the fall of At some point during New Construction, Mr. Hinkle
1963. I was a second class ST.
had the Sonar Gang begin 12-hour days. When Denny
I had come from ASW School, Key West, where I had
been trained on the AN/BQS-6; the new sophisticated
sonar for these new sophisticated Fast Attack
told his expecting wife about the long hours, his
mother-in-law said that with the baby coming, the overtime
pay would come in handy. Don’t we all wish!
Submarines. After classes, another second class and I I haven’t seen Denny since he left the Boat in 1965, I
would checkout and watch training films on surface think. Yesterday, I was able to send him an e-mail and
sonars. Since the first class exam was all about I’m anxious to hear back. Since I only go into town
skimmer stuff we needed to learn about the operation once or twice a month to do e-mail stuff, don’t look in
and maintenance of the various equipments, search the Mail Sack to see if we connected. You can ask me,
patterns for numerous conditions, tactics for detection
and tracking, etc., etc. I thought with all this studying,
or maybe even Denny, at the Reunion.
we were almost guaranteed to pass the first class exam.
I could spout off all kinds of information that I would MISCELLANEOUS
never use. Well, I didn’t pass the test.
Here’s a neat website sent by Mike Gaffney. Type this
Shortly after reporting aboard Haddo, Mr. Hinkle – my
division officer, said that he had recommended me for
first class. “And, by the way, when I think someone is
ready for advancement, they had better not prove me
ULR into your search engine and see some old Haddo
faces. Actually, they’re not that old.
wrong.” He even gave me a couple hours a day on the Here’s another website that may be of interest, sent by
barge to study. My gut feeling was that after watching Bob. Veterans can now request a copy of their DD214
all those movies and completing all the training courses electronically through the National Personnel Records
while in Key West, it wasn’t going to help to rehash Center (NPRC). The process takes between 10 and 14
those training books. After I took the first class test business days. Veterans can also request their military
again, I realized I was right; I was going to fail this test records electronically! Log on at: -
a second time.
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/
Failing the test wasn’t my biggest worry. It was Mr.
Hinkle. He told Chief Jamison one time “You can
disagree with me if you want. Then we can go behind
the tool shed and I will convince you who’s right”. I
doubted that Mr. Hinkle would take me behind the tool
shed, but I knew his verbal attack could be just as bad.
I worried about the day the results would come back
showing my failing mark. I planned speech after
Military veterans and the next of kin of the deceased
former military members may now use this on-line
military personnel records system to request documents.
Other individuals must use the standard form 180,
which can be downloaded from the website. For more
information about requesting military or VA records
call 1.314.801.0800
speech in preparation, but I couldn’t stop worrying.
The armpits of my dungaree shirts became stained
beyond savaging. If I saw him I would move to avoid
his physical proximity. Then the day came. It came,
but I couldn’t believe it. I had passed the test and was
to be advanced to ST1.
That evening, David Lee Denny came over to my
apartment and we sat in the front room and drank Old
Grand Dad till the sun came up. 100 Proof, Bottled in
Bond – what were we thinking? Sometime in the wee
THANKS
For all of you who over the years have helped pay for
the production and distribution of the Haddo
Newsletter, your contributions have been sincerely
appreciated. Those contributions greatly reduced our
out-of-pocket expenses; we couldn’t have done it
without your help.
Thank You All Very Much!
I have also gotten lots of help from Hall and Liz Clark
in getting the e-mail versions out to those of you have
agreed to receive an electronic version. It saves trees;
but more importantly to Susie and I, it saves printing
and postage costs, plus about four days of labor
printing, collating, folding, stuffing, labeling, and
stamping. Ralph and Trudy Stroede have also
contributed to getting this newsletter to you. They have
done exhaustive internet searches to increase the
number of shipmates that we can make contact with,
plus putting the newsletter on the website. They have
even made the mailings for the last issue and this one. I
can’t thank these four people enough, so I am just going
to offer a simple, but heartfelt, “Thank You”.
That leaves Susie and me with the task of putting the
newsletter together. We could come up with things of
marginal interest and generate a newsletter all by
ourselves, of course, but you won’t like it nearly as
much as when you can read about the experiences of
other Haddo sailors. Stories that stimulate memorable
experiences you’ve been through; that cause you to
remember the camaraderie that you once shared; that
make you laugh again at the fun we all had; that revive
the sense of personal pride we once felt as a well oiled
team; and that rekindle the meaning of Shipmate.
Stories from all of you can do that; mine alone can’t.
So, I hope you realize, we still need your help. You
can’t be takers all the time. You have to be a giver
once in a while too. Be a giver again, like you were on
the Boat. You didn’t just stand aside and let others do
all the work. Everybody pitched in. It’s time to pitch in
again and send us some of your memories. Help your
shipmates relive some of the most memorable times of
their lives; or maybe just be that stimulus that put a
smile on their faces. Without your inputs, I am afraid
that this newsletter will simply fade into a biannual
reunion announcement.
ROSTER UPDATE
Take a look at the roster!!! There are more names in
red, meaning that they are new to the roster, than there
ever has been. Our roster has almost doubled – thanks
to the efforts of our reunion committee and specifically
Trudy and Ralph Stroede. Just after the roster, there is a
list of names that they couldn’t find any contact
information for. Please take a look at that list and see if
you can help fill in any of the blanks.
If you change your e-mail address, please inform Ralph
Stroede at rstroede@hughes.net, or let me know at
raydbf@aol.com. Otherwise you will become one of
those names on the ‘WANTED’.
The Biggest British Submarine Ever Built
Meet HMS Ambush, the Royal Navy’s newest hunterkiller
submarine. The ‘super-sub’ is able to make
oxygen and fresh water from seawater, to keep the 98
crew (it has not yet been decided if this will include
women) alive in time of crisis. Her nuclear reactor
could power a city the size of Southampton, she will
never need refueling and she can use her guided
missiles to pulverize an enemy more than 1,000 miles
away. And, despite being 50 per cent bigger than the
Swiftsure and Trafalgar subs that she will replace,
Ambush is quieter. Her propellers are said to make less
noise than a baby dolphin, making her virtually
undetectable to enemy vessels.
Of course, that is if enemy vessels can get near her.
The submarine’s sonar and radar are so sensitive that
she can detect ships a staggering 3,000 nautical miles
away. It means that if she was sitting in the English
Channel she would know if a ship left New York's
harbor. A true titan of the deep, the £1.2billion warship
will be launched at Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria on
Thursday. But naval chiefs will nervously hope the
newly named craft will not suffer the same catalogue of
disasters that has recently befallen her sister vessel,
HMS Astute. Astute’s captain, Commander Andy
Coles, was relieved of his duties after the submarine ran
aground on a sandbank off the Isle of Skye in October.
During the rescue, a tug collided with the sub, causing
£7million of damage. Last week, she limped back to
her home port of Faslane after a mechanical failure at
sea. Ambush will be unveiled and officially named by
Lady Anne Soar, the wife of the Royal Navy’s
Commander in Chief, Fleet Admiral Sir Trevor Soar
After the ceremony, the awesome 7,400-tonne sub will
be wheeled from her shed and lowered into the wet
dock for further outfitting and testing. And having
come in massively over-budget and five years late, the
Navy is expecting nothing less than a top-of-the-range
vessel. More complex than the U.S. Space Shuttles and
able to circumnavigate the globe without surfacing,
Ambush is 291ft long, as wide as four double-decker
buses, and 12 stories high. A typical patrol lasts ten
HMS Ambush
weeks, but she could theoretically stay underwater for
her entire 25-year lifespan.
HMS Ambush will carry 38 missiles, a mixture of
Tomahawk cruise missiles, which have a range of 1,240
miles, and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes to target
other ships and submarines. Her nuclear-powered
engine will propel her through the water at more than
20 knots, allowing her to travel 500 miles a day. In this
image released by the Navy, a section of the hull behind
the conning tower has been intriguingly obscured for
security reasons.
MAIL SACK
Steven Albert
Hey Hal, Please change my Address. I’m still a DAC, but have a friend there who is old Navy and we have some fun with the
soldiers, but mostly it is trying to see that the deserving get help and the wanna bees get out. Tell Butters I pass through
Walsenburg at least 6 times a year going to Aztec NM, and I'd like to look him up sometime. Have a friend in Alamosa that I try
to keep tabs on also, not an SS though. Hope you’re doing well, maybe I can arrange my schedule to be in St Louis for a little of
the time this next round. Have a few folks I'd like to see. You too!! Steven
__________
Hey Steve, that would be great if you can make St. Louis. I'd love to swap sea stories with you too. It's been way too long since
I've seen you. I'll pass this on to Ray Butters and make sure this gets changed for the crew's list and mail out of the newsletter.--
Hello Hal, I received your name/e-mail from Adam Black who forwarded the current newsletter on to me. I don't know if you are
the webmaster/editor of the newsletter or not, but I would like to have my name added if you are. If not, I would appreciate any
assistance you could provide. I tried to add about a month ago, but the address listed for a contact in the newsletter (not yours)
bounced back to me. I was the corpsman from 1981-1983. We made a WestPac right after I checked aboard and then we went to
Mare Island upon returning. I wound up completing my qualifications while in the yard.
Ralph, thanks for adding my name to the e-mail list for distribution (the cost of mail is just too high). I relieved as Chief Engineer
in the middle of the SUBSAFE overhaul in Charleston in 1970 and was relieved just in time to throw off the lines, from the pier
side, as the ship left for the refueling overhaul in Mississippi. Jim
Thanks for the newsletter. If you could put my address and e-mail in the crew list, that would be super. Thanks/Senior Chief E
(Haddo 83-85 (Rouse/Raaz crew).
Arthur Kneuer
I was initially assigned to Haddo pre-commissioning crew as Chief of the Boat. Shortly after my arrival I was advanced from
TMC(SS) to LTJG and was replaced by Chief O’Hara. I assumed the temporary duties of Weapons Officer until my transfer to
OCS, Newport, RI. Arthur (Dutch) Kneuer mailto:AKneuer@aol.com
Thank you for the newsletter. I'm a 604 vet from 86-89. How do I get my contact info on the next newsletter? Reunion looks like
a good time; wife and I recognize many names including having served with Gregg Larson. Take care. Steve
Kenneth Patterson
Mr. Clark, Thank you for the newsletter! I have greatly enjoyed it. I was station on the Haddo (My first boat and qualified on
her.) sometime between 1989 through decommission. I have many found memories of my time onboard. I also would have to say
that it was the most rewarding out of the three I was station on. The other two are the Jefferson City and Hyman G. Rickover.
I was wondering if it would be possible for future newsletters to have the years they served next to the name? I was looking for
some friends in the list but my memory was failing me on some of the first names. Thanks, Ken Patterson
__________
Ken, At present, I only have the dates of service aboard Haddo for a few shipmates. However, we are currently trying to gather
that information. My best suggestion to you is to attend the reunion this September in St. Louis. There will be shipmates there
from the time frame that you were aboard that you can get reacquainted with and even find the whereabouts of others. Of course,
you name is now in the roster and some of your old shipmates may get a hold of you. Ray Butters
Aloha Trudy! Thank you so much to you and your husband for being such an important part of keeping Haddo memories, new
and old, alive amongst her alumni. I will not be able to attend the Haddo Reunion next September but I would like to share my
personal info for your database. I was an SK2(SS) aboard Haddo from Sep 75-Oct 79. My full name is Artagnan L. Rodriguez.
My address is 3071 Jimmy Way, Roseville, CA 95747. My home phone is (916) 749-4967. You have my permission to place my
information, including my email address of artagnan57@comcast.net, on the Haddo roster list (I did not see my name on it in the
latest newsletter). Thank you again for all the work you do in keeping the gang together and informed on the “whatever happened
to….”. Take care and have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Sincerely, Artagnan L. Rodriguez, FTCS(SS), (Ret. USN)
Mark Schwinger
Hal, Thanks for the newsletter; really enjoyed it. While this may not be the correct forum: As far as women aboard submarines, I
would only ask for a review of their overall record at the academy. Personally, I do not think they belong on U.S. submarines. It
is clearly not that they aren't capable; it is strictly a morale issue with families. But then, the liberals seem to always win. That is
why they refuse their last rights and demand their last lefts. Mark Schwinger
__________
Thanks for the comments Mark, I agree 100%. I remember when they started putting women on surface ships. With the first “trial
group” almost all of them were pregnant within the first 18 months. There are too many discomforts and distractions on a boat.
Don’t need anymore distractions or stressors while serving on a boat.
I’ll forward your comments to Ray Butters and hope to see you at the next reunion, as I think we’ll be able to make this one. I wish
we could have “piggy backed” our reunion with the United States Submarine Veteran’s reunion in Springfield, MO. as it is in the
same month as ours and is right down the road from Branson, MO. Best Regards, Hal Clark
