October 2010
Principal’s News
We are well into the 2010-11
school year and continue to be
pleased with the effort and the
attitude of our student body.
The four by four requirement in
which almost all students must
take an additional mathematics
and science class has become a
reality for this year‘s seniors. In
the end, it will be very beneficial
to those students—
especially those who will be
attending a university. The rigor
required in Physics, Anatomy &
Physiology, Statistics and Risk
Management, Algebra II, Pre-
Calculus, or Dual Credit Algebra
will be needed to prepare
students for taking similar
coursework at the university
level. The days of Fundamentals
of Mathematics, Pre-
Algebra….are gone.
Old and new traditions continue
to blend. Upper classmen
have really embraced football,
volleyball, drum-line, and the
color guard and are showing
great support for those programs.
That support has not
gone unnoticed by the coaches,
directors and the players! In our
established programs, we expect
to continue to perform at high
levels—cross-country, basketball,
baseball, softball, golf,
tennis, track, band, choir, FFA,
BPA, and academics. These
programs provide many students
with the motivation to
succeed in the classroom and
are integral parts of our overall
success. Currently more than
three hundred of our four hundred
and twenty five students
are involved in one or more
extra-curricular activity.
Special thanks to the volleyball
parents who worked tirelessly
in organizing the Volley
for the Cure on October 5, as
our girls hosted Lindsay. It was
a great night of volleyball,
sportsmanship among two fine
schools, and fundraising for a
great cause. Thanks again to
those parents for a great evening!
Fall Theatre Production
Band News
Krum High School Theatre is proud to
present its Fall play, Dirty Work at the
Crossroads, by Bill Johnson. The play
is an old-fashioned, 1890‘s melodrama,
complete with heroes, villains, and lots of
other comical characters. It will be
played in high melodramatic fashion.
The audience will be encouraged to
―boo‖ and ―hiss‖ at the villains and
―cheer‖ the heroes. It also has some interesting
technical effects. We will be
doing three performances: Friday
night, Oct. 22 nd at 7:00 p.m. and two
shows on Saturday, Oct.23 rd at 2:00 p.m.
and 7:00 p.m. This is a full-length, 3-act
play running a little over 2 hours, including
the intermission. Ticket prices are
$5.00 for students and $6.00 for
adults. Children under school age are
free if accompanied by an adult.
Congratulations to Zach Ripple (drumset)and
Emily Mills (Trumpet) for being
selected for the Region 2 All-Region Jazz
Band. They will perform on November
20 th at Argyle HS.
The HS band will be playing in the
stands and at halftime with the drum-line
and color guard next home JV Blue game
on Oct 15 th .
The HS Drum-line performed at the
Red River Drum-line Festival in Wichita
Falls and did a great job. They also plan
to perform between volleyball games in
the KHS gym on Tuesday, 10/5.
Key Club
The Krum High School Key Club is off
to a great start as we enter out 2nd chartered
year. The officer team has recruited
over a hundred members in the past two
years. We have started traditions such as
the Sadie Hawkins‘ Dance and the Halloween
car wash which we hope will
continue in the future. This year we have
planned to take part in the Cure for Kat,
Players in Progress (PiP) camp, the Krum
Robotics
The Krum HS DC BEST Robotics team
is three weeks into the 2010 season. After
completing a three week preseason
(during weeks 2-4 of school), the team
went to our Kick-off (September 18) to
find out that this year's game, "Total Recall",
involves processing parts in a factory
setting. Golf balls will represent
"Gizmos" and loaded Easter Eggs will
represent "Gadgets". Gizmos come in
three colors. Gadgets will contain either 5
circular magnets or 5 marbles. We will
have to be able to detect "magnetic" eggs
vs nonmagnetic eggs.
Each round, one color of golf ball and
one of the eggs will be declared
"defective". To score points, we must
totally avoid having any defective parts
Spanish Club
Spanish Club will meet for the second
time this year, on October 14 th , before
school. We have a lot to discuss:
New T-shirts, activities for the children
at the Nelson Center, and other ways to
bring Latin culture to Krum and the students
here.
Any one is welcome to join us. We
have a lot of fun, while learning more
about each other and those in the community.
on the factory floor at the end of the
round. A process engineer will work on
the playing field and a remote control
driver will work from the side of the
field. It is an interesting game that we
have developed two major scoring strategies
for.
The robot is almost complete. Some of
our potential drivers have been driving it,
already, for the past few days. Finishing
touches are being put on the
―claws" (there will be two). They must
not only lift and place the eggs, but also
small safety cones. The second claw will
lift and place Frisbees onto cones that
will be inverted and put on a rack. Before
the top (Frisbee) is put on, eggs will be
placed inside. The golf balls will be captured,
carried and dropped into a sorting
Boys Cross Country
The Krum Varsity Boys Cross Country
team received 1st place at the Gingerbread
Jamboree on October 1st. The
boys ran their best times of the year
(Taylor Troth-17:34, Trevor McEntire-
18:31, Dallas Shifflett-18:32,
Cody Ramey-18:36, Kyle Mankin-18:44,
Lane Divin-18:53). The boys team has
three more meets before the district
meet. We run in Wichita Falls on October
7th, Ponder on October 13th, and
Haltom City on October 21st. We will
compete for a district title on October
25th at Wichita Falls.
College Night
On September 21 st , KHS took a
group of 25 Juniors and Seniors to
the College night at UNT. Over 250
colleges, universities and military
institutes were in attendance. The
students were able to talk to representatives,
get information and interact
with other high school students.
box by a clever device that has been developed
by several of our team members.
It is our goal to be in the last match of
the day (finals) with an opportunity to
win the contest (DC BEST) and advance
to the state level (Texas BEST). After
that, IF we can place high enough in
Texas BEST, we could advance to the
National BEST contest (last year held in
Dallas).
IF you see lights burning late near the
cafeteria, that is your KRUM HS DC
BEST Robotics team hard at work preparing
for Game Day. It is October 30 at
the UNT Pit. Admission is free. We
would love to see you there to support
your KRUM HS DC BEST Robotics
team. The contest begins at 9am. SEE
BOBCATS DEFEAT ALBA-
GOLDEN IN DOUBLE
OVERTIME
Krum Heads to Blue Ridge for
Friday Night Game
The fact that it was Alba-Golden's
homecoming game didn't intimidate the
Bobcats. And the fact that the homecoming
defenders were juniors and seniors
didn't keep the freshmen and sophomore
Krum players from defeating the Pirates
14-13 in double overtime.
"Our defense did a great job carrying
the team against Alba Golden. I was very
proud of how we played on defense and
ran the football to punish the ball carrier.
Overall it was great for the program and a
huge learning experience for the Bobcat
football players to get the opportunity to
travel far from Krum and play a varsity
opponent in their homecoming game,‖
said Athletic Director and Head Coach
Gary Robinson.
The Bobcats had a hard fought game on
offense, with most of the yardage coming
through the air. Zack Hughes had 5
catches for 62 yards. Tanner Rankin also
had a big catch for 41 yards. Brennan
Ellis, Angel Martinez, and Reed Flores
also caught passes for the Bobcats.
On defense, the Bobcats were led by
Ellis and Dylan Coffin who each had 12.5
tackles. The defense was a huge asset for
Krum with a goal-line stop in overtime
that ensured a victory for the Bobcats.
Development Events. Leadership Development
Events include contests in Job
Interview, Quiz, Radio Broadcasting,
Agricultural Issues Forum, Public Relations,
and Parliamentary Procedure. The
District VII LDE competition will be held
November 11 in Ponder, Area Competition
will be held November 20 at Krum,
and the State LDEs will be held December
4-6 in Huntsville.
Students are also beginning new projects.
New lamb, goat, and swine projects
are beginning to fill the Krum FFA
The overtime play was exciting for the
Bobcats as they tested their endurance
and athleticism.
―Playing in overtime will also become a
valuable experience as we keep building
for 2012. I'm so proud of our sophomores
and freshmen for stepping into these varsity
games and taking on the challenge
like true champions," said Coach Robinson
The JV White team had no trouble
against the Lions, winning with a score of
14-6.
The players of the week were named as
Additionally, Ag Mechanic students are
planning, designing, and constructing
various metal and wood projects to be
exhibited this spring as well. Animal and
Ag Mechanics projects help students gain
practical life skills in responsibility, time
and money management, sportsmanship,
and specific skills relating to their individual
project program.
The Krum FFA will hold its next meeting
October 18, 2010.

Volley For The Cure 2010
―The Volley For the Cure 2010 – BUMP,
SET, CURE!‖ was a huge success thanks
to the tremendous outpouring of the people
in this community. The KHS Lady Cats
hosted the 2 nd Annual Volley For The Cure
(VFTC), which is a Breast Cancer Awareness
Program taking place in high schools
across the country throughout the month of
October, which happens to also be National
Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Belinda Dominguez, mother of #11 of the
JV Blue Team, Justice Dominguez,
brought the idea to Krum when she and her
daughters moved here last fall. Since the
first VFTC was a huge success the 2010
Lady Cats set a goal to make the 2 nd Annual
event even greater. Well that they
did, raising over $3,000 to be donated to
the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which
helps fund breast cancer research and
awareness. Plans for an official
―Presentation Ceremony‖ to the Susan G.
Komen Foundation are in the works and
will be announced in the coming days.
To help set the tone for the event Mr.
Mike Davis, KISD Superintendent, proclaimed
Tuesday, October 5 th , as Krum
ISD Pink-Out Day and encouraged fans
young and old to wear their official VFTC
shirt, or pink, to the game for special ticket
discounts. From special ticket prices to
prize winning, the night was filled with all
kinds of excitement. The KHS Drum Line
provided an incredible presentation before
the game to liven up the crowd, and that
they did. From swinging drums to turning
circles, this talented Drum Line was an
exciting group to watch and hear. After all
of the pre-game festivities Katie Callahan
lead with a prayer which was followed by
Lainey Polley as she brought down the
house with our National Anthem. Tim
Robinson continued to provide the crowd
with entertainment throughout the night
with his lively Emcee‘ Voice. As Tim
announced the JV Blue Team the players
each threw out autographed pink minivolleyballs
and the crowd even got rowdy
just trying to catch those little balls. The
KHS Cheerleaders played their part in
keeping the crowd energized as they
cheered on the Lady Cats, and they also
designed VFTC Themed ―Run-Through‖
banners for the teams.
Throughout the night, fans even got to
join in by participating in the ―Serve It Up
Challenge‖, Silent Auction, Live Auction
and Raffles. Unfortunately, no one could
quite live up to the ―Serve It Up Challenge‖
and organizers say they may have to
go a little easier on the participants next
year. Mrs. Alice Pierson won the raffle of
the first 2010 autographed varsity volleyball
and graciously donated it back to
Coach Lucas and the Lady Cats for their
trophy case. Bobcat running back, #22
Reed Flores won the raffle for the first
2010 autographed varsity football donated
by the 2010 Fightin‘ Bobcats. Fans also
got to bid on a fun and exciting prize during
the Live Auction: the opportunity to be
―Coach For The Day‖ and sit with Coach
Lucas, her Lady Cats and Staff during the
home game next Tuesday against Valley
View. A big ―PINK THANK YOU‖ goes
to KHS Basketball, Baseball and Football
players Ty Damron,
Creed Holley,
Gavin Noack,
Allison Beck and
Rachel Olsen for
supporting their
classmates by
wearing their
official VFTC
shirt as they
helped ―shag
balls‖ during the
―Serve It Up
Challenge‖ and
warm-ups.
Probably one of
the greater success
stories of the
night was the announcement of the class
winner of the ―DROP UR CHANGE
2010‖ Challenge, where students of KHS
were encouraged to drop their spare
change in class specific jars. Eric Borchardt
of Northstar Bank and Chris Farmer
of First United Bank, accompanied by an
official drum roll given by none other than
Mr. Zac Ripple, announced The Freshman
Class of 2014 as the winners of this challenge
with an incredible contribution of
$429.40. The freshmen were up all hours
emptying piggy banks and texting classmates
reminding them to bring their
change. The freshman class will receive a
Pizza Party hosted by Robert Garriott, Sr.
and Robert Garriott, Jr. of CiCi‘s pizza
next week. ―DROP UR CHANGE‖ Jars
were also placed at Subway, Krum Vet,
First United Bank and Northstar bank for
members of the community to DROP
THEIR CHANGE. Thank you to all students
and adults alike for their contributions.
Local businesses such as Northstar Bank,
Tex-Star Water Services, First United
Bank, The Krum Star, It‘s Just Sports Photography
and Tristate Midstream stepped
up with corporate sponsorships along with
the Krum Athletic Boosters donating the
proceeds from the concession stand to the
VFTC. In addition, Tim and Kathy Robinson
along with Danne and Becky Pearn,
and Sonein Noack were major contributors
to the success of the event as well as Laura
Foster Urich. There were so many volunteers
who were a part of the event last
night and Coach Lucas and the Lady Cats
appreciate all that was done for them. In
fact, Coach Lucas told the Krum Star, ―The
overall feeling of the night was awesome.
The community really came
through in support of our ‗Volley for the
Cure‘ event.‖
She went on
to say ―We
have a great
group of volleyball
parents
who
have worked
hard putting
this night
together making
the
‗Volley for a
Cure 2010‘ a
great success.‖
During her
interview
with the Krum Star, Coach Lucas also recapped
the girls‘ athletic success, ―The
girls had a great night on the court. We
started off strong on the very first serve
with a strong kill coming from #14 Kimberly
Robinson. We continued to play two
solid games to defeat the Lady
Knights. This group of girls has made
tremendous improvement throughout the
year, and I am so proud of them. They
continue to work hard every day and their
future is looking very bright and exciting!‖
After the game, Tex-Star Water Services
provided a meal for the Lady Knights and
the Lady Cats and they all had a great time.
What a wonderful way to make an amazing
night even better, a win and great food!
The VFTC 2010 would not have been
successful without the support of this great
community, and organizers wish to thank
each and every person who played some
part in this effort to make this event such a
huge success. They also want you to know
that they have already begun plans for next
year‘s event, so be watching for when the
Lady Cats will present, ―VFTC 2011 –
Two Teams, One Dream!‖
