RABBI’S MESSAGE
The last couple of months have been difficult for this congregation and me.
We have lost a number of our members; some of us had been seeing each other
once or twice a week at funerals, and at one point we had two shiva minyanim
going simultaneously. I have to say that the members of the shul rose to the
occasion; we had no trouble making any of the minyanim and, in most cases,
there were overflow crowds. As one of the mourners said, the room at her house
was not only filled with people, but with love as well. It is to the credit of our
shul that we have given so freely of our time and of ourselves. This is what a
true shul, not a building with members, does. I would like to take this
“opportunity” to emphasize just how incredibly important it is that the
membership continue to answer the call. In the last twenty years here, I have
learned many things, one of the most important of which is that people remember
what others do or do not do for them at times of loss. I personally, and I know of
others, who have been thanked years later for a small insignificant act of
kindness I or they performed for someone at a time of a relative’s death; I have
also seen the hurt last for an equally long time for not coming through. Trust me:
people remember vividly those who are there for them and those who are not. I
want also to emphasize that the end of shiva should not represent the end of our
support. Please check in with those who have suffered recent loss in the weeks
and months following the death. We are all in this together, and we are all
responsible for each other as the rabbis have said.
Speaking of responsibility, and on a brighter not, I want to brag a little bit
about the wonderful doings of our High School students. Phillip and Lindsay
Pogash, Daniel Rapkin and Keith Gerstein, among others from the EPIC Club,
without any adult assistance, organized a benefit concert on January 5 th , which
raised $500 for an organization that will provide a well for an African village.
The event took place at the Clinton Community Center and featured bands from
North Hunterdon. A week later Tari Jaffe organized a cabaret of talented
performers ⎯ singers, dancers, improv ⎯ from Hunterdon Central that raised
$1000 for Doctors Without Borders, and several hundred dollars for the TUFFS
Fund to help purchase needed supplies for Doug Gross’s unit in Israel. The cabaret was held at the FJCC. If this month is any
indication, this is a shul meeting its responsibilities, locally and internationally, in life and in death. As we come to the second
anniversary of our new building, we are living up to the rabbinic prescription for the ancient Temple in Jerusalem: its light must go
forth from the Temple and shine outside. May our light continue to shine outside as well.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
These are the times that try men's souls.
Thomas Paine, The Crisis
December 23 rd , 1776
Fellow Congregants:
I usually dedicate this space each month to discuss what
has been going on at the Flemington Jewish Community
Center. This is the forum for me to let everyone know our
news, and to thank those who have contributed to our
community. I enjoy the ritual that writing this column has
become, since it requires that I take a few moments to think
about all that we've done at the FJCC over the past month.
But this month has been different.
As of this writing (January 15 th ) we will have had eight
funerals over the past four weeks. Members that I meet
around town tell me that they are reluctant to answer the
phone when the synagogue is on the Caller ID, afraid to hear
yet another phone tree message. I hope that by the time you
read this, there will not have been any others. But as we
have been reading at the end of each shiva minyan:
Shall man live eternally? Shall he never see the grave?
Wise men too must die, even as the foolish and the
senseless, leaving their possessions to others. Psalm 49
I know that death is part of life. I know that life has
meaning because it is finite. I've read Rabbi Harold
Kushner's When Bad Things Happen to Good People for the
wisdom that he provides to these difficult questions.
While the logical center of my brain is often troubled at
times like these, my heart is warmed when I see the reaction
of this community. We truly are a kehillat chesed – a caring
community – that responds in times of trouble. We have
come together for funerals; we have cooked and cleaned
houses; we have brought minyanim to every house that
needs one; and we've taken care of each other at the most
important time.
But I know that many of our members do not know how
to react to that phone tree message or email, especially when
it is someone that they did not know personally. Please
allow me to offer the following advice:
1. In other communities, the first night of shiva is usually
just for family and close friends of those sitting. In
Flemington, we generally do not hold that convention,
and you are welcome to come at any time that you can.
2. We announce the time of minyan not only to set the time
for services. It also establishes for the family when they
should expect the “crowd.” Do not feel that you are
intruding if you come “just for the service.” The
mourners are expecting you. If you are running a few
minutes late, please do not let that stop you from paying
a shiva call.
3. If you do not know what to say, that's okay. The Rabbis
teach us that when approaching a mourner, we should
wait for the mourner to first speak to us, rather than
engage them in conversation. We do not know what the
mourner needs to hear at that very moment; they may
wish to speak of the departed, but they may not. Sit
next to them, or stand nearby.
4. As with everything else Jewish, we tend to obsess about
the food. Please do not feel that you have to send a fruit
basket or walk in the door with a tray of cookies in order
to properly pay your respects. Your mere presence the
week of shiva is a comfort. If you want to cook for a
family, think about sending food the week after shiva, or
the week after that. When the immediacy of the death
fades, this is when the mourners may need us the most.
5. Finally, please do not forget mourners after shiva has
concluded. Mourning a loss is not done in a week – this
is why the rabbis have instituted rules for the first
month, the first year, and on the yahrzeit. For that first
year, birthdays, anniversaries and other milestones will
be very difficult for the mourner. Reach out to them at
these times as well.
We are truly blessed to have a community that comes
together in times of crisis. I want to thank everyone who has
helped us to make minyanim these past few weeks. Let us
hope that we can see each other in the future – only for
simchas!
Jeffrey Doshna
Sisterhood Co-Presidents Corner
We would like to send our most sincere sympathies to
those members of our synagogue who have lost loved ones.
Unfo rtunately, there have been quite a few. I recently attended
“shiva” at the home of Mildred Goodman, who lost her
husband, Ben. Both Mildred and Ben have been long time
members of the Flemington Jewish Community Center. To “sit
shiva” is the Jewish tradition of mourning. It allows the
mourners to say “Kaddish,” the traditional mourners prayer, in
the presence of friends and family. In order to say “Kaddish,” a
minyan, or group of 10 Jewish adults, is required to be present.
When I looked around the home of Mildred Goodman, I was
amazed to see so much warmth and caring. There were FJCC
members and Sisterhood members, as well as friends and, of
course, family members. It was interesting for me to realize
that not only in life do we need each other, but also in death our
community is extremely important.
Speaking of our caring community, we would like to thank
Nancy Rumore and Debbie Symanski for all of their hard work
and planning for the Progressive Dinner. Thanks also to those
Sisterhood members who opened up their homes and cooked
appetizers, dinners and yummy desserts. It is always a very
special event! We would also like to thank Lois Gross and
Michelle Cohn for running our second movie night. Please
keep your eyes open for our last movie night on Sat. March 1 st .
Also in February, we have our third Sisterhood meeting, where
we will learn how we can participate in Brook Liebowitz’s
literacy project. Make sure to remember the Book Club, which
is scheduled for February 7 th , and always includes fascinating
discussions.
Sisterhood is a wonderful way to meet other members of
the synagogue, make new friends, try out new activities such as
“game night,” participate in community service projects such as
the upcoming MS Walk, as well as to enjoy watching your
children at the Purim Carnival or wonderful entertainment at the
Mother’s Day Dinner, which is on Tuesday May 13 th .
Whatever your interest, we have a place for you. As always,
you can call Melissa Kleiman or Debbie Hylton with any
questions or ideas.
Stay warm, B’shalom,
Melissa Kleiman and Debbie Hylton

As part of my Bat Mitzvah project, I
am again raising money for the National

Multiple Sclerosis Society by leading a team
from the FJCC called Kimberly’s Wolffpack.
Thanks to many of you, we had a great
team last year that raised over $4,500. I
am inviting all of you from the FJCC to join
our team! This year’s MS walk is Sunday,
April 13, 2008, right here in Flemington.
This project is also part of the Sisterhood
and FJCC Community Service Calendar.
I know that together, we can make a
difference! I am doing this for my Aunt
Sharon, for Karen Walsh and for everyone
else who lives with this disease every day.
It’s our small way to help Tikkun Olam
(Heal the World).
By joining our team, we will be working
together for a common cause. Each step
we take brings us one step closer to a cure
– and closer to a world without Multiple
Sclerosis. Please join my team today or
make a donation on my behalf to help wipe
out this disease in our lifetime. You don’t
even have to make a donation to join my
team. Just by joining and getting others
involved, we will make a difference.
If you would like to make a donation or
join our team, please email me at
nmwolff@patmedia.net, or call (908) 782-
2812 and I can give you all the details.
I know that together, we can make a
put a team together
and supported area walks to benefit cancer.
This year the FJCC Sisterhood has decided to
stay close to home and participate in the local
MS Walk. Leader of the pack, Kimberly
Wolff, hopes to have a huge turn out from the
FJCC.
The Sisterhood is encouraging the
membership to put on their walking shoes and
join the team by registering for the walk on
April 13 th .
It is not just about raising money, but
about being part of the team. “We had a lot of
fun walking together in friendship for a good
cause. It was a beautiful sunny day that added
to everyone’s fun and excitement for the event!
We are all looking forward to this year’s walk
Visiting the Sick. It is not just a nice thing to do, it is
something we are commanded to do. Our tradition tells us
that just a visit to the sick can reduce the amount of time
until they are healed. Want to be a part of this “healing
community?” Here’s how it’s done. Call or email Sharon F
Brooks and tell her you want to be a part of this important
committee – to give just a little of your time and be of
immense help to others. You will be scheduled for no more
than three visits during the course of the next year. In
addition to having your scheduled dates published in the
bulletin, you will get a mailing about one month before that
will include a reminder memo and a few brochures to bring
with you.
On your assigned date, call the synagogue office after
10:30 AM to get a list of names of Jewish patients at the
BIKUR CHOLIM
13
Hunterdon Medical Center. You will then go to Flemington
Floral to pick up flowers and cards and proceed to the
Hunterdon Medical Center with these items for the patients
as well as a brochure. Make sure to bring some comforting
words, and share a few minutes of your time to brighten
someone else’s day. It may be the best medicine they can
get! So call or write, get involved with this extraordinary
mitzvah, and make everyone’s day a bit brighter.
All members of the Bikur Cholim committee will
receive our new volunteer handbook, if they did not already
receive it.
Thank you to all who are currently, or who plan to
participate in this wonderful committee.
RUMMAGE SALE NEWS
To: Flemington Jewish Community Center Congregation
Fr: Lois Gross and Dale Rothfeld, Co-Chairpeople
It is almost Rummage Sale time again. The Rummage Sale is scheduled for Sunday, March 9 th ,
and Monday, March 10 th , 2008. We need your help. It is a tremendous amount of work for one
week, but it brings in too much money for us not to continue with this profitable function.
Here’s how it works:
• Bring your used, but not abused, clothing, books, toys and household goods in sellable condition to the
synagogue no earlier than Wednesday, March 5 th , 2008. Bring the items directly into the social hall. Tables will
be set up to designate placement of the different items. Wherever possible, please distribute your donations to
the appropriate areas.
• Please remember when you gather your donations we need sellable merchandise. Broken appliances and toys
with missing pieces take up valuable space and add to the problem with disposal after the sale.
• No undergarments will be accepted.
• Please volunteer time to organize rummage throughout the week. Any time you can spare will be gratefully
accepted and appreciated.
• Come to our Rummage Set-Up Gathering on Saturday evening, March 8 th , 2008 at 7:30 PM, to help with the final
arrangements and last minute details (SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE).
• We need help during the actual Rummage Sale to help individuals buying items and straightening items. Monday
is Bag Day. We need volunteers to sit and collect money after the shoppers make their purchase. Please call or
email Lois or Dale if you can help bag the items after the sale on Monday afternoon.
• Tax deduction vouchers for the items donated can be obtained in the office.
• Due to problems of disposing large articles, it will be necessary to call or email either Lois or Dale before bringing
the article(s) to the synagogue. Please understand if the item(s) does not sell, you MUST pick up the item(s)
from the synagogue by Tuesday, March 11 th , 2008.
Once again, we are requesting your help. If everyone puts in a little time, the job does not become
an overwhelming burden to the committee members. If you have any questions, please feel free to call
or email us.
Hebrew Chanting Circle
When: Thursday, February 7, 2008, 7:30 to 9:00 PM
Where: Temple Sholom, 594 N. Bridge St, Bridgewater
Fee: $5.00 donation
chanting using sacred Hebrew phrases that promote the
healing of our souls (Tikkun Ha'Nefesh) as we strive
to contribute to healing our World (Tikkun Olam). Hebrew
is a sacred vibrational language, and the repetition of a
sacred phrase can clear the mind of clutter and create a sense
of inner peace and wholeness. In the silence that follows, we
can listen for God’s voice within us. No prior knowledge of
singing, chanting, or Hebrew language is necessary.

Parshat Mishpatim – February 2, 2008
Following on the heels of the Ten Commandments,
Parshat Mishpatim (Exodus 21:1-24:18) deals primarily with
civil law. The juxtaposition of the ritual with the mundane
provides an enlightening insight into Judaism. From the
Torah's perspective, there is no distinction between the
ceremonial and the worldly activities of life - both should be
infused with holiness and both must be kept completely and
diligently. Included amongst the civil laws discussed in the
Torah portion are the laws relating to the Jewish servant and
his freedom; penalties for causing bodily injury to another
person and for damaging his property; laws regarding
watchmen and borrowers; the mitzvah to show sensitivity to
the poor and to offer them free loans; and laws relating to
the honest dispensation of justice. After mentioning the
mitzvot of Shabbat and Shemittah (the seventh year when the
land in Israel must be left to rest), the portion continues with
a brief discussion of the three pilgrimage festivals - Pesach,
Sukkot, and Shavuot - and Hashem's renewed promise to
bring the Jewish people to the land of Israel. The Torah then
returns to the revelation at Mt. Sinai. The Jewish people
declare their commitment to do whatever Hashem
commands, and the portion concludes with Moses' ascending
the mountain, where he will remain for forty days and forty
nights to receive the rest of the Torah.
Parshat Terumah – Feb ruary 9, 2008
Parshat Terumah (Exodus 25:1-27:19) begins a series of
four out of five portions which discuss in detail the
construction of the Mishkan, the traveling Tabernacle which
would serve as a "resting place" for Hashem's presence
amongst the Jewish people. This entire portion recounts
Hashem's description to Moses of how to construct the
Mishkan, beginning with a listing of the various precious
materials to be collected from the Jewish people for this
monumental project. Hashem describes the magnificent
golden and wooden Ark which would house the tablets of
the Ten Commandments, complete with its dazzling cover
depicting two Cherubim (angels with the faces of children)
facing each other. Next, Hashem provides Moses with the
blueprints of the shulchan (holy table) upon which the
lechem hapanim (show-bread) would be placed each week.
Following the depiction of the pure golden menorah
(candelabra) which was to be hammered out of one large
piece of gold, Hashem describes the structure of the Mishkan
itself, detailing the splendidly woven and embroidered
covers, curtains and partitions, and the sturdy outer walls.
The Torah portion concludes with the instructions for the
copper altar and the large outer courtyard.
Parshat Tetzaveh – February 16, 2008
Following the detailed commandments in the last
portion concerning the construction of the Mishkan
(Tabernacle), Parshat Tetzaveh (Exodus 27:20-30:10) begins
with the daily mitzvah given to Aaron and his sons to kindle
the menorah (candelabra) in the Mishkan with pure olive oil.
21
Hashem describes to Moses the special garments which are
to be worn by the Kohanim (priests) during their service,
woven and crafted from materials donated by the people.
The Torah portion then shifts its attention to Hashem's
commandments regarding the melu'im, or inauguration ritual
for the newly constructed Mishkan, to be performed
completely by Moses for seven days. The melu'im included
Moses' adorning and anointing the Kohanim, and his
bringing korbanot (offerings). On the eighth day, Aaron and
his sons would assume their offices as the Kohanim. After
then describing the korban tamid, the offering to be brought
in the Mishkan every day of the year in the morning and
afternoon, the portion concludes with the command to build
the last of the Mishkan's structures, the golden altar upon
which the ketoret (incense) would be offered every morning
and afternoon. All of these commands are carried out in the
concluding portion of Exodus, Parshat Pekudei.
Parshat Ki Tisa – February 23, 2008
The diverse and wide-spanning Parshat Ki Tisa (Exodus
30:11-34:35) begins with Hashem's command to Moses to
take a census by collecting an equal contribution of a halfshekel
coin from every adult male between the ages of 20
and 60, the profits from which will go to the Mishkan
(Tabernacle). Hashem describes to Moses the copper kiyor
(wash basin) with which the Kohanim (priests) would
sanctify their hands and feet before serving in the Mishkan.
Also discussed is the anointment oil, which would be used to
sanctify the Mishkan's various vessels for regular use. This
is followed by the recipe for the aromatic ketoret (incense)
to be burned twice daily. Hashem designates Betzalel, of the
tribe of Judah, and Oholiav, of the tribe of Dan, to supervise
the upcoming construction of the Mishkan. The mitzvah of
Shabbat is then repeated to caution the nation that even the
construction of the Mishkan does not supersede the
observance of the weekly day of rest.
The Torah returns to the narrative of the revelation at
Mt. Sinai and describes the devastating sin of the golden
calf. Hashem relents to Moses' prayer that the Children of
Israel should be spared from annihilation for this grievous
transgression, and Moses descends from the mountain with
the two tablets of the Ten Commandments in hand. Upon
witnessing a segment of the population dancing around the
golden calf, Moses smashes the tablets and burns the idol,
initiating the process of repentance. As a result of the
people's fall from their lofty spiritual plateau, Hashem
announces that His presence cannot reside amongst them,
and Moses is forced to temporarily move the Tent of
Meeting out of the camp so that Hashem can continue to
communicate with him. Moses again ascends the mountain
to pray to Hashem that the Jewish people should be forgiven
and regain their status as the chosen people. Moses
eventually returns with the second set of tablets and a
renewed covenant with Hashem, his face radiant as a result
of his recent Divine experience.
