April 2012/9 Nissan – 8 Iyar 5772
RABBI’S MESSAGE
It has been an eventful month thus far. The FJCC participated in our first
ever Shabbat Across America, and thanks to the efforts of chair Bruce
Moskovitz, a dinner sponsored by Alissa and Jim Fox, Evie and Phil Stern, Roz
and Harry Zackowitz, and the synagogue, with an assist from Sharon Rednor and
John Fellin, it was a most successful affair. One hundred and forty people
attended. At the same time, Adah Radzin organized a Book Fair, adding yet
another layer of activity. The shul was not exactly bursting at the seams, but
going at full blast or more.
Following Shabbat Across America, we had one of our best attended Purim
services in a long time. Billy Ray Sheet (Laurence Shatkin), Michael Wolf, Alex
Rapkin and Mitch Clarin provided a great musical touch and Billy Ray Sheet’s
rendition of the Megillah was wonderful.
Why do I relate all this? For several reasons. First, to recognize and thank
those who participated and made this happen. Second, I think it is important for
this shul to recognize the great gift it has in offering what few places, secular or
otherwise, can: a community. No doubt, more of this will surface in a future
High Holyday sermon, but Alain de Botton has just written a book entitled
Religion For Atheists: A Non-Believers Guild to the Uses of Religion, excerpted
in the Wall St. Journal. He begins the excerpt with the following: “One of the
losses that modern society feels most keenly is the loss of a sense of community.
We tend to imagine that there once existed a degree of neighborliness that has
been replaced by ruthless anonymity, by the pursuit of contact with one another
primarily for individualistic gains…” to which I wanted to respond, “Duh!” but
thought better of it. However obvious his point is, as I sat in the social hall at the
erev Shabbat dinner, I could not help but notice we had, in contrast to the modern
society Botton describes, a group of people whose ages ranged from 6 months to
over 90, with every age in between, none in “ruthless pursuit of contact…for
individualistic gains” or none that I could detect. There were people with all
different levels of observance, and one who had never really been to a Shabbat
service. Children, adults, elders. How often to we get to experience this kind of
gathering in this day and age? Yes, we may have the same age spread at football
or baseball games, but never with the kind of intimacy that this dinner offered. And if I may show my bias, this dinner was
connected to something greater than itself, to a tradition that is three-thousand-years-old, to Jews who were sitting down to this
same Shabbat dinner all across the country. No sports game can boast of working on all those different dimensions at the same
time. Botton is right; we can, as his subtitle indicates, stand to learn something from religion, or perhaps I should change that to
read: no, we involved in the religious community have known of these uses all along. Glad to see that he’s finally come around.
Hag Same’ach V’Kasher. A happy Passover to all.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Fellow Congregants,
On March 2 nd , over 150 people came together at the
FJCC for Shabbat Across America. It was a wonderful
event – dinner, followed by services – and I would like to
thank Bruce Moskovitz for taking charge of the event, and
Sharon Rednor for organizing the dinner. And thanks to
everyone else who helped out with setting up, serving, and
cleaning up. Mark your calendars for March 2013.
But between now and then, the National Jewish
Outreach Program (the people who organize SAA) can also
provide us with resources for other great programs, such as

Crash Course in Basic Judaism
Crash Course in Jewish History
Hebrew Reading Crash Course (Levels I and II)
Hebrew Writing Crash Course
Shabbat Beginners Service
as well as programs around High Holidays, Sukkot,
Chanukah, and Purim. We' like to offer a few of these at the
FJCC over the next year, but need to know what people are
interested in. Please email me at
(president@flemnigtonjcc.org) or leave a note for me in the
office, and we'll see where the greatest interest is.
Just a few days later, we celebrated the festival holiday
of Purim. It was wonderful to see such a big crowd on
Wednesday night for our family Megillah reading, especially
all the kids. Thanks as always to Rabbi Jaffe and his
Hebrew High Players, as well as to Laurence Shatkin, Mitch
Clarin, Mike Wolf, and Alex Rapkin for their performance.
Thanks to Sharon Rednor for organizing our hamentashen
baking. I also want to thank Jami Miller and Rochelle
Moneta for once again working with Lori Findley to
organize our Mishloach Manot fundraiser. And finally, to
Jackie Lefkow and our YJ kids for a great Purim Carnival
the following Sunday. Thanks as well to Jane Wasserman,
Jenn Fine, and everyone else who helped out with our Café.
And if I've forgotten to thank anyone, my sincere
apologies.
As we begin our observance of Pesach on the night of
April 6 th , it is my sincere wish that everyone in the FJCC
family enjoys a chag kasher v'sameach.
SISTERHOOD In The ‘Hood…
Happy Nisan and April, everyone! Despite the mild
winter, it's always wonderful when spring has finally sprung,
and we hope you are enjoying it. Just a few quick notes
from Sisterhood this month:
Please make sure you will be joining us for our annual
Mother's Day event this May. The Woman of the Year
award brunch will be held on Sunday, May 6, at noon.
Please make a note in your calendars, the invitations will be
on their way to you very soon. As always, the brunch will
be an enjoyable mix of great food, fun entertainment, prizes,
and a lovely time with your friends. Don't forget, we'll also
be naming the Woman of the Year for 5772/2012. Who will
it be? We know you'll want to be there to find out!
Thank you to everyone who baked a huge amount of
tasty hamantaschen, led by Sharon Rednor, for the
synagogue Purim Spiel as well as the Purim Carnival.
Thank you to Jane Wasserman and Jenn Fine, who ran the
Purim Café at the carnival. With their staff of Purim Café
helpers, they cooked up and served a yummy lunch. A great
time was had by all! Purim at the FJCC is a fun celebration,
and we're so glad Sisterhood can lend a hand with the
festivities.
Thank you to Lois and Dale for their tremendous
efforts, and to everyone who lent a hand, for another
successful Rummage Sale. Your contributions are always an
important part of the Sisterhood effort to the FJCC
community.
Coming up soon will be the Sisterhood Scholarship
awards – please don't miss this special Friday night Shabbat
Service on May 4. Sisterhood is proud to support our soonto-be
FJCC collegians; they are our future. We hope you
will join us.
ABOUT THE HOLIDAYS
MAKE YOUR PASSOVER SEDER BEAUTIFUL AND MEMORABLE
The following suggestions, although not part of the
formal laws, will help create a true ruach, or spirit, of
Passover:
Parents should involve the children in the hustle and
bustle of pre-Pesach house
cleaning and general holiday
preparations. The memories
of the sights, sounds and
smells of the home around
holiday time remain with us
as Jews throughout our adult
lives. So let the children feel
the excitement and
anticipation.
Let your Seder table be as elegant as your means permit.
Spare nothing in endeavoring to make the service superb, the
setting breathtaking, and the floral arrangements thrilling.
Order an adequate number of copies of the Haggadah
sufficiently in advance.
The leader of the service must set the tone of a religious,
though cheerful, home service. The service is to be the
central part of the celebration, and the meal secondary. The
parents can help establish this tone by giving the younger
children a late afternoon snack so that their hunger will not
make them restless.
The leader should assign, in advance, the portions to be
read by others so as to give them time to become proficient.
He/she should personally study the "Ma Nishtanah," the Four
Questions, with the youngest child. This may prove one of
the happiest by-products of the Seder service.
Since the service is, in larger measure, designed for the
children, they must be involved at every opportunity,
especially in the description of the Four Children, the
opening of the door for Elijah, the Echod Mi Yodeah and the
Had Gadya. Teenage children can easily be taught to make
charades or quiz programs of these portions. These incidents
are not only good, but are placed in a setting so gay as to give
our children a sense of joyfulness of the Jewish story.
The evening must not end with the meal. The closing
portions of the Haggadah should be reserved for after the
meal.
Anyone unfamiliar with our lore will feel a bit awkward
about conducting a religious service, but the awkwardness
wears away with the doing, and in its place comes a sense of
belonging to a great tradition, of participating in the birth of a
people's freedom.
ROBYN DILLER TO SPEAK
Please join us on Shabbat morning, April 14, to hear
Robyn Diller speak about her memoir, How Everything
Changed, the moving story of a woman who was established
in her life as a single mother of three young boys and as a
respected psychologist but who one day realizes she is not
happy. Robyn then makes a dramatic decision to move to
Israel where she finds peace of mind, spiritual contentment,
emotional fulfillment and even a new career. In the book,
Diller describes the trials and obstacles she faced in making
this decision: from selling her home and relocating to a new
country and a radically different culture, to closing up her
practice and finding schools for her children, to telling her
parents, her boyfriend and her neighbors about the move.
Robyn Diller graduated from Northwestern University
writer’s program and then went to Emory University where
she received her Ph.D. in psychology. She established her
practice in Connecticut, married, had three children, then
divorced. Since moving to Israel she has become a partner in
a travel agency. She is currently working on her first fiction
novel.
The Forman Family would like to thank the congregation for their support and donations
during the time of the passing of Nomi’s beloved mother, Beverly Kogan.

thanks to Jake Walsh and Jake Clarin for making the
The Purim Megillah reading was well attended. It was a
pleasure to see over 70 students participate in or watch the
Purim Story performed by the Hebrew High School students
accompanied by Billy Ray Sheets and his band (Laurence
Shatkin, Alex Rapkin, Mike Wolf and Mitch Clarin).
This past month, the students collected money to
purchase Mishloach Manot for soldiers in Israel. The
students raised $154.47 in addition to the congregation’s
Hebrew School Happenings
three half-shekels donation of $142.00. All in all, we raised
$300 to send 30 soldiers, a unit, Purim Baskets.
BOOK FAIR EPILOGUE
Well our lobby is now less crowded, but emptier and not as colorful. After all the books were packed and their red stands were
trucked away, it does look a little bare, though now we do have room for the festivities of our Spring Bar and Bat Mitzvah season.
It was a pleasure to watch our Hebrew School students excitedly peruse the displays. I truly enjoyed discussing the literature
with my fellow congregants. For a week and a half we were literally “The People of the Book.”
Of course, as with all FJCC endeavors, the success of the Book Fair was due to our numerous volunteers. The efforts of the
following people were greatly appreciated:
• Alex and Laurie Rapkin for a day spent unpacking and arranging the books
• Our booksellers: Pam Nemeth, Seth Cohen, Heather Michaels, Barbara Clarin, Sara Kippelman, Audrey Riche, Debbie
Hilton, and Myra Rosner
• Sharon Rednor and Amy Steinfeld for packing up
• Kimi Mittler for keeping track of all the sales, and Karen Walsh for her support and general assistance
• Last but not least, thanks to everyone who supported the Book Fair by buying books
We couldn’t have done it with out everybody’s help. Happy reading to all.
PARSHIYOT SUMMARIES FOR APRIL
Courtesy of Torah from Dixie, Inc. at TFDIXIE.COM
April 7, 2012 – Passover, Second Seder
April 14, 2012 – Passover, 8 th Day
Parshat Shemini – April 21, 2012
Parshat Shemini (Leviticus 9:1-11:47) begins by
discussing the events which occurred on the eighth and final
day of the melu'im, inauguration service in the Mishkan
(Tabernacle). After months of preparation and anticipation,
Aaron and his sons are finally installed as Kohanim (priests)
in an elaborate service. Aaron blesses the people, and the
entire nation rejoices as Hashem's presence rests upon them.
However, the excitement comes to an abrupt halt as Aaron's
two eldest sons, Nadav and Avihu, are consumed by a
heavenly fire and die in the Mishkan while offering a ketoret
(incense) on the altar. The Torah states that they died
because they brought a "strange fire" into the inner sanctum
of the Mishkan, the meaning of which is discussed by the
commentators at great length. Aaron is informed that the
Kohanim are forbidden to enter the Mishkan while
intoxicated, and the Torah continues to relate the events
which occur immediately after Nadav and Avihu's tragic
death. The portion concludes with a listing of the kosher
and non-kosher animals, and various laws about tumah,
ritual contamination.
Parshiyot Tazria and Metzora – April 28, 2012
Parshat Tazria
After the discussion at the end of last week's portion
regarding tumah (spiritual impurity) resulting from dead
animals, Parshat Tazria (Leviticus 12:1-13:59) introduces
the various categories of tumah emanating from human
13
beings, beginning with a woman upon giving birth. The rest
of the portion describes in great detail the varying and
numerous manifestations of the disease called tzaraat.
Although it has been commonly mistranslated as leprosy,
this skin disease has little resemblance to any bodily ailment
transmitted through normal exposure. Rather, tzaraat is the
physical manifestation of a spiritual malaise, a punishment
from Hashem primarily for the sin of speaking lashon hara
(evil speech), amongst other transgressions and anti-social
behavior. Known as a metzora, someone afflicted by a
tzaraat-like patch on his skin is subject to a series of
examinations by a Kohen (priest), who declares the patient
to be either tahor (pure) or tamei (impure). If tamei, he is
isolated outside of the camp, an appropriate punishment for
someone whose foul tongue caused others to become
separated from one another. After describing the various
forms, colors, and manifestations of the disease on a person's
skin, head and beard, the portion concludes with a discussion
of garments contaminated by tzaraat.
Parshat Metzora
Parshat Metzora (ibid. 14:1-15:33) continues the
discussion of tzaraat, detailing the three-part purification
process of the metzora administered by a Kohen, complete
with immersions, korbanot (offerings) and the shaving of the
entire body. After a lengthy description of tzaraat on houses
and the command to demolish the entire residence if the
disease has spread, the final chapter of the portion discusses
several categories of natural human discharges which render
a person impure to varying degrees.
