Invitation for a Picnic
In today’s Gospel we see the Risen Jesus being a host at a picnic breakfast. His invited guests were His closest friends and disciples.
The apostles were sad and were feeling the absence of Jesus and were trying to go back to their ordinary lives so they went
out fishing without any success. Once Jesus came they caught a miraculous catch – 153 fish – possibly a symbolic number meaning
all peoples. Some say at that time there were 153 known species of fish and 153 nations. On their own the apostles couldn’t catch
anything. Was Jesus reminding His friends that without Him they could do nothing? There are probably many examples in our own
lives that in hindsight we could say that Jesus was telling us you cannot just do it alone.
Often Jesus gathered His friends around Him to feed them. This special lakeside meal of fish and bread reminds us of the
Eucharistic presence of the Risen Jesus in the community.
The gathering around the table is important for us as the family of believers – the Church- as well as the gathering of individual
families –the domestic church. As a family of believers we are invited by our host, the Risen Jesus, to come, eat, live. Out of
His great love for us our host becomes our food. The reception of communion is a very intimate act of love to us from God!
It is so important that as families (the domestic church) to gather around the table in our homes to offer words of praise and
thanks and to ask for God’s blessing on the food that nourishes our body and soul. Jesus comes to sit with us at our family table like
he did many times with his disciples. So often we don’t recognize Jesus in our midst just like the apostles didn’t recognize Jesus
standing on the beach.
Why was it that the disciples didn’t recognize Jesus in the post-resurrection stories? In today’s gospel John is the first to
say, “It is the Lord!” Is it because he is the one who seems to be more reflective, more attentive, and closer to the Lord? For us the
attributes of reflection, attentiveness and closeness are surely needed to recognize the Lord Jesus who is always in our midst. At
times our busy lives, the constant noise around us, and the lack of a personal, familiar relationship with Him may prevent us from
seeing the Lord Jesus in our everyday lives.
To grow in the awareness of God in our lives it helps if at the end of the day we stop to ask ourselves where was
God in my life today? Where did I see Jesus helping me through other people? When I looked in someone’s eyes
did I see Jesus? With some reflection we can discover how many times we see Jesus standing on the “beach” in
our home, workplace, classroom, or at the store. And then … to what is He inviting us?

Notes from REP...
This weekend, the First Communion families
carrying the Offertory gifts are the Seeman family
at 4:30pm and the Scherf family at
10:30am. Next weekend, the Gieseke family will carry the
gifts at 4:30pm, the Zawacki family at 9 am and the Lowry
family at 10:30am.
A Eucharist meeting for both parents and children in
St. Paul's school and REP second grade will be held on
Mon. April 19 at 6 pm in the Church. This will include a
prayer service, enrollment in the scapular and practice.

The first of six sessions of RAINBOWS For All God's
Children will be held on Wed, April 14 at 6:30pm in the
