OCCUPATIONAL EXAMPLE 

The Athabasca oil sands are large deposits of bitumen (extremely heavy crude oil), located 

in northeastern Alberta, Canada. This oil deposit is the largest reservoir of bitumen in the 

world and lies under 141,000 square kilometers of sparsely populated forest and contain 

about 1.7 trillion barrels of bitumen. The Athabasca deposit is the only large oil sands 

reservoir in the world suitable for large-scale surface mining. 

Workers in these oil sands are exposed to environmental elements on a daily basis with 

exposure to extreme colds. Temperatures in Alberta can range from 32º C in the summer 

(90º F) to -46º C (-51º F) in the winter.

footwear collection includes a variety of comfort, durability, safety and technology features intended to keep workers protected and 

comfortable in the harshest of conditions. 

ASTM 

Our safety footwear is tested to meet and exceed strict ASTM 2413-05 and ASTM F 2412-05 testing methods and performance standards 

for ‘Personal Protective Footwear’ sold in the United States. All ASTM 2413-05 certified footwear must provide impact and compression 

resistance; our safety footwear is rated I/75, C75 – the highest available strength for impact and compression. Additional protection may be 

provided within the footwear as noted below. 

Advance Alloy Safety Toe 

Cat ® footwear with Advance Alloy Safety Toes are rated ASTM F2413-05 EH 

and are 50% lighter than traditional steel toe footwear while still protecting toes 

from impact and compression. 

Composite Safety Toe 

Cat ® footwear with Composite Safety Toes are rated ASTM F2413-05 and are

Electrical Hazard

Puncture Resistant 

Cat ® Puncture Resistant footwear meets ASTM F2413-05 PR standards with a 

steel mid-plate designed to prevent objects from puncturing the sole. 

CSA 

Our safety footwear is tested to meet and exceed strict CAN/CSA Z195-02 testing methods and performance footwear standards for 

‘Protective Footwear’ sold in Canada. All CSA footwear must have fitted protective toecaps, with the exception of conductive and static 

dissipative footwear. The protective toecap must be made of a material that meets the requirements for impact resistance and must meet

Footwear constructions 

CEMENT 

The upper is cemented to the outsole, creating a durable bond. An 

economical construction that provides flexible, lightweight footwear, 

cement construction is widely used in sports shoes. However, the 

soles cannot be replaced. 

DIRECT ATTACH 

Durable waterproof construction where the upper is chemically 

bonded to the outsole. The outsole material – usually PU or PVC – 

is poured into a mold in a liquid state. As it cools, it bonds to the 

upper, creating a durable waterproof construction. 

iTECHNOLOGY 

Cat Footwear patented method of using a cement construction in 

the heel with a Goodyear welted forepart. The result is durable 

footwear with the added benefits of lightweight flexibility and shock 

absorption. 

STROBEL 

The upper is stitched at the border to a flexible woven material 

(rather than glued to a fiberboard). Commonly used in hiking and 

athletic shoes. 

WELT 

The upper is stapled, stitched and cemented to the outsole. Regarded 

as the most durable method of attaching the upper to the outsole.

COMPOSITE TOE 

Protects the toe area against falling objects (impact) or heavy rolling 

objects (compression) with a protective non-metallic composite toe. 

Composite toe footwear must be replaced after being involved in a 

footwear-related accident. 

CONDUCTIVE FOOTWEAR 

Designed to discharge static electricity from the wearer’s body through 

their shoes to the ground. It minimizes static electricity and reduces the 

possibility of ignition of volatile chemicals or explosives. 

ELECTRICAL HAZARD FOOTWEAR 

Reduces the hazards due to accidental contact with live electrical circuits 

and electrically energized conductors or parts. 

METATARSAL PROTECTION 

Designed to prevent or reduce injuries when the toe and metatarsal areas 

of the foot are exposed to “drop” hazards. 

PUNCTURE RESISTANT FOOTWEAR 

Includes a sole puncture resistant device—often a plate—which reduces 

the possibility of a sharp object penetrating the sole. 

STATIC DISSAPATING FOOTWEAR 

Reduces the accumulation of excess static electricity by conducting body 

charge to the ground while maintaining a sufficient high level of resistance 

that protects the wearer from electrical hazards due to live electrical 

circuits (no exposed nails are permitted in SD footwear). 

STEEL TOE 

Protects the toe area against falling objects (impact) or heavy rolling
