OCCUPATIONAL EXAMPLE<br />
The Athabasca oil sands are large deposits of bitumen (extremely heavy crude oil), located<br />
in northeastern Alberta, Canada. This oil deposit is the largest reservoir of bitumen in the<br />
world and lies under 141,000 square kilometers of sparsely populated forest and contain<br />
about 1.7 trillion barrels of bitumen. The Athabasca deposit is the only large oil sands<br />
reservoir in the world suitable for large-scale surface mining.<br />
Workers in these oil sands are exposed to environmental elements on a daily basis with<br />
exposure to extreme colds. Temperatures in Alberta can range from 32º C in the summer<br />
(90º F) to -46º C (-51º F) in the winter.<br />
