When it comes to pipes
size does matter
Energy consultant Chris Parsloe highlights a key feature
of the service provided by SAV Modules
S
izing of the multilayer pipes,
manifolds and valves that make
up the FloCon modules is an essential
feature of the SAV service. Without this
facility the design engineer would be
faced with the daunting task of
SAV’S NEW MAN IN
WALES AND THE WEST
S
AV Modules
has appointed
David Edge as area
sales manager
covering Wales
and the southwest
of England.
He will be based at
Penarth near Cardiff, within easy
reach of specifiers and projects in
South Wales, Bristol and the south
western peninsular.
The appointment underlines SAV's
conviction that the UK market for
energy saving, variable volume
technology is opening up - and fast!
His career has included appointments
with a building services consultancy
in Bridgend and a mechanical and
electrical contractor based in Cardiff.
selecting each
component,
calculating its
pressure loss and
summating the
losses to give an
overall resistance.
The only data the
client needs to provide are the flow
rates and pressure losses through the
terminal units, plus some indication
of the maximum lengths of
multilayer pipe between manifolds
and terminals. This data is required in
order to size the 2-port control valves
and the governing differential
pressure control valves.
Sizing of these two key components is
the trickiest part of the exercise. In
order to achieve good authority, the 2-
port valve must be sized such that the
pressure loss across it is a significant
proportion of the total pressure loss
controlled constant by the DPCV. Due
to the uniform pattern of the modular
arrangement, this calculation can
usually be automated.
There’s no substitute for an
experienced engineer’s input to the
sizing process!
AV Modules has announced an
enhancement the company’s
FloCon Commissioning Module design.
In future all FloCon units will be
supplied ready fitted with a bypass that
ensures that system flow never falls
below 10%. This offers a simple, but
highly effective, solution to the
“Achille’s Heel” of the variable volume
approach to energy saving by providing
automatic protection for expensive
variable speed pumping systems, which
cannot be allowed to pump against a
closed system.
The new SAV feature will also improve
system response time by ensuring that
there is some heating or chilled water in
the local pipework at all times.
The bypass addresses another
frequent concern to consultants by
ensuring good “local” circulation of
chemicals added to the system water
to combat pseudomonads. These slime
forming organisms can be a problem in
closed circuit lower temperature
systems, especially those with nil or
low levels of oxygen.
Bypasses will be an integral feature of
All SAV FloCon Modules – sized and
selected to match individual
application requirements. Pump
selection is unlikely to be affected in
the majority of cases.
The technique makes a perfect match
for the Differential Pressure Control
Valves (DPCV’s) used by SAV Modules.
To ensure that the system is completely
“future-proof” all SAV Commissioning
Modules now also incorporate a spacer
section to make room for the integration
of an energy meter should this ever be
required.
Pioneered
SAV pioneered the modular concept for
distribution of hot and chilled water in
heating and air conditioning systems.
The SAV FloCon Commissioning
Modules is now a standard solution for
use with 2 and 4-pipe fan coil systems
and chilled beams.
Now a simple, but highly effective
improvement permits even more
efficient performance. SAV FloCon
Commissioning Modules can now be
supplied with an integral 10% bypass
already fitted.
The option to incorporate small, in-built
Differential Pressure Control Valves
(DPCV's) has always been a major
feature of SAV FloCon Module design.
FloCon Commissioning Modules used
with flexible multi-layer pipework make
it possible to sub-divide the system into
smaller, self-contained sub systems
each served by a single distribution
Module with its own integral DPCV. The
distance from DPCV to control valve is
reduced to the minimum and accurate
modulating control of the pumping
system is maximised.
The right 2-port valves can be selected.
Modules also reduce the need for
additional sub-branch rigid pipework,
which might otherwise be required.
The Commissioning Module technique
enables one compact DPCV to be
shared by up to six terminal units with a
maximum loading of 11.6kW heating
and 6.3kW cooling per terminal – a
highly cost efficient ratio.
Moreover, because the DPCV’s are
located close to the terminals, the
pressures they control are relatively low –
typically 0.2 – 0.5 bar. Crucial good valve
authority can be achieved every time.
Minimum flow
However, to protect the pump(s) a
minimum flow equivalent to 10% of the
system maximum must be maintained
at all times.
This can be achieved by utilising a
reverse acting DPCV, which operates on
the main flow lines on each floor. This
senses rising pressure and will throttle
flow down to 10-15% as the system
closes down. Such DPCV's are expensive,
however, and offer poor local control.
An alternative is to configure the system
with one fan coil unit in the mini system
served by the SAV FloCon Module fitted
with a 3-port valve so that the system
can never totally shut down.
Now there’s a third alternative. SAV
Modules is offering FloCon units with
an in-built 10% permanent bypass. This
solution is simple, but ensures that the
system is protected at all times - without
special design consideration.
Pre-insulated Pipe Protection For SAV
Connections In The Heart Of The City
S
AV FloCon Modules continue to
play their part at the heart of UK
commerce.
Located just northeast of St Pauls, 20
Gresham Street is a new build
development by Hermes Offices
offering 240,00 ft 2 of prime office space
in the oldest part of London.
SAV Modules has supplied 200 FloCon
Commissioning Modules to Skanska
Rashleigh Weatherfoil for integration
into the air conditioning system serving
the eight-storey building.
The units were specified by Hilson
Moran - London Office.
The project team already had experience
of the speed which SAV's Modular
solutions could bring to the installation
and commissioning of vital services.
They'd previously used SAV FloCon
Modules at Adelaide House at the north
end of London Bridge. COPY AA
This time it was decided to aim for
further savings in time and installation
cost by pre-insulating the SAV Alupex
pipework with Armaflex Tuffcoat. This
flexible nitrile rubber insulation
material features an outer polymeric
coating. It protects pipework against
mechanical impact and is resistant to
attack by birds and rodents. A built-in
vapour barrier prevents condensation
and that outer coating means that no
painting is required.
Concept
In traditional systems, using copper pipe, the valves
must be close to the fan coils to allow full flushing of
the pipe work. Once you employ flexible, multi-layer, plastic coated metal
pipe where no flushing is needed, all valves can be centralized. This allows
off-site assembly, swift commissioning and effortless maintenance.
Draper’s Gardens Sets Modular Record
D
raper's Gardens in London EC2 has
made its way into SAV's record
books.
The 14-storey office and retail
development now under construction
here for the Royal Bank of Scotland
represents the largest order yet placed
for SAV FloCon Commissioning
Modules.
And - for the record - the project is also
one of the first to employ Modules
featuring the new integral bypass (see
page 2).
Nearly 300 Modules will be supplied,
together with Alupex multi-layer flexible
pipe work, to distribute heating and
cooling services to over 1000 fan coil
units in the 37,500m 2 development.
FloCon Commissioning Modules used
with flexible multi-layer pipework make
build projects are carefully preplanned
for fast installation and speedy
commissioning, so that occupants can
be moved into the building as soon as
possible.
If the building is in a prime location the
need for a fast track solution is usually
even more urgent.
But what if the building is not only in
one of London's most prestigious sites,
but is also already occupied - with
tenant having to move out while the
environmental control system is
upgraded?
That's exactly the scenario that led to
specification of SAV FloCon Modules
for 1-7 Savoy Court. This Grade ll listed
building dates from 1903 and stands
immediately adjacent to the Savoy
Hotel.
Savoy Court, off the Strand, is, by the
way, the only street in the whole of
Britain where all traffic drives on the
right!
The 57,000ft 2 office space over eight
floors has been totally refurbished for
the existing tenant, who relocated to
temporary accommodation while the
work was carried out. Bluu Solutions
designed the new office environment
and managed its construction.
The air conditioning system installed
by Kentex comprises SAV FloCon
Modules distributing hot water and
chilled water to a 4-pipe fan coil
system. For maximum speed new fan
coils were installed in the locations of
the old units they replaced. Pipework
and distribution systems, however,
have been completely revised to meet
modern requirements for easy
maintenance and more efficient
control.
The SAV units are located in the ceiling
voids with runs of Alupex multi-layer
pipework taking the most convenient
paths to the fan coils mounted in the
ceilings, or behind wood paneling on
the walls.
CHISWICK PARK
C
hiswick Park is one of the UK's
largest commercial developments.
The 30-acre landscaped business park
offices to retail units and
restaurants.
Building 9 is the first on the site to feature
a pre-installed fan coil system - boosting
its appeal to potential tenants. Sixty SAV
FloCon Commissioning Modules located
in the floor voids serve the system - each
supplying heating and cooling media to
a group of 4-pipe fan coils at the
perimeter of each of the five floors.
SAV’s Commissioning Module
technique enables one compact DPCV
to be shared by up to six terminal units
with a maximum loading of 11.6kW
heating and 6.3kW cooling per
terminal – a highly cost efficient ratio.
If the pressure available from the
pump should increase, then the DPCV
will close in order to take out the
excess pressure. If the pressure
available should reduce, then the
DPCV will open so that more pressure
becomes available.
Moreover, because the DPCV’s are
located close to the terminals, the
pressures they control are relatively
low – typically 0.2 – 0.5 bar. Crucial
good valve authority can be achieved
every time.
