Product Notes: Due to dye lot variations, it is important to order all the shades for the same room at one
time. When the shade is in the raised position, the color will appear more intense. The shade must be in
the lowered or closed position in order to determine commercial tolerance of color when compared to the
sample book swatch. All cellular materials will appear blotchy to some degree and show minor flaws when
an exterior light source back-lights the shade. These issues are considered acceptable inherent characteristics
of the fabric. All fabrics have a small amount of flaws present that can be seen close up. We consider
these flaws unacceptable only if from a distance of five (5) feet they can still be seen. Some minor puckering
of the fabric may occur where the fabric is attached to the headrail. This is an inherent characteristic of
all cellular material and considered acceptable. Some billowing of fabric may also occur on strong sun windows,
if you raise the product quickly. To avoid this, either wait for the heat to dissipate or raise the shade
very slowly. Cellular material has a memory. Once a shade has billowed and been creased by raising it
improperly, it tends to continue. Two-on-one headrail shades may not hang evenly due to fabric bias twist.
This tends to cause the bottom of each shade to flair either toward the window or away from it. Please
make your customer aware of these product notes at the point of sale.
Product Notes: Due to dye lot variations, it is important to order all the shades for the same
room at one time. When the shade is in the raised position, the color will appear more
intense. The shade must be in the lowered or closed position in order to determine commercial
tolerance of color when compared to the sample book swatch. All cellular materials will
appear blotchy to some degree and show minor flaws when an exterior light source backlights
the shade. These issues are considered acceptable inherent characteristics of the fabric.
All fabrics have a small amount of flaws present that can be seen close up. We consider
these flaws unacceptable only if from a distance of five (5) feet they can still be seen. Some
minor puckering of the fabric may occur where the fabric is attached to the headrail. This is
an inherent characteristic of all cellular material and considered acceptable. Some billowing
of fabric may also occur on strong sun windows, if you raise the product quickly. To avoid
this, either wait for the heat to dissipate or raise the shade very slowly. Cellular material has
a memory. Once a shade has billowed and been creased by raising it improperly, it tends to
continue. Two-on-one headrail shades may not hang evenly due to fabric bias twist. This
tends to cause the bottom of each shade to flair either toward the window or away from it.
Product Notes: Cellular room darkening materials have minor flaws including timy pin holes
and fabric mottling, which are accentrated due to the backlit effect. This is inherent to this
type of material and is considered acceptable. Due to dye lot variations, it is important to
order all the shades for the same room at one time. When the shade is in the raised position,
the color will appear more intense. The shade must be in the lowered or closed position in
order to determine commercial tolerance of color when compared to the sample book
swatch. All cellular materials will appear blotchy to some degree and show minor flaws
when an exterior light source back-lights the shade. These issues are considered acceptable
inherent characteristics of the fabric. All fabrics have a small amount of flaws present that
can be seen close up. We consider these flaws unacceptable only if from a distance of five
(5) feet they can still be seen. Some minor puckering of the fabric may occur where the fabric
is attached to the headrail. This is an inherent characteristic of all cellular material and
considered acceptable. Some billowing of fabric may also occur on strong sun windows, if
you raise the product quickly. To avoid this, either wait for the heat to dissipate or raise the
shade very slowly. Cellular material has a memory. Once a shade has billowed and been
creased by raising it improperly, it tends to continue. Two-on-one headrail shades may not
hang evenly due to fabric bias twist. This tends to cause the bottom of each shade to flair
either toward the window or away from it. Please make your customer aware of these product
notes at the point of sale.
Product Notes: Cellular room darkening materials have minor flaws including tiny pin holes
and fabric mottling, which are accentuated due to the backlit effect. This is inherent to this
type of material and is condedered acceptable.
It is necessary to apply continual pressure
(pushing or pulling) by hand to operate this
product. If the installation is in a high window
where the top of the shade extends beyond
arm’s reach, it is advisable to order a skylight
Specialties
Two Shades on One Headrail
Cellular Shades
Two shades on one headrail is the option used most often
when installing shades over a sliding glass door. The center
gap between shades is 3/8”. Each shade operates independently
with its own lift control. The controls must be
positioned on the left side of the left shade and on the
right side of the right shade. There will be a 3/8” space
between the shades. Two-on-one head rail option is
available for all shade rail systems. Price as 2 separate
shades, then add the surcharge of $90.
Octagon and Hexagon Shades
Octagon and hexagon are non-operational shades. They
remain in a fixed, closed position. They must have a
minimum width per side of 12” and a maximum total
width (edge to edge diameter) of no more than 30”.
Price as a standard shade using the widest width and
length and add a surcharge of $245.
The trapezoid shade is operational. it must open in the
direction of the longest rail. This rail will be locked in a
fixed position. The maximum width is 72” with a maximum
height of 96”. The maximum difference between
the widest width and narrowest width can be no more
than 12”. Price as a standard shade using the widest
width and add a surcharge of $245.
Trapezoid Shades
Cut Outs
Cut outs are frequently used to avoid the protruding tile
at the bottom sides of a kitchen window. The problem
with using cut outs on a shade is that the length dimension
of the shade in relationship to the individual cell
location is not stable. The shade will stretch over time
and the cell position will migrate accordingly. In other
words, the height position of the cut out will change and
or move. In addition, the shade fabric may begin to fray.
Please make your customer aware of these facts. Price as
a normal shade and add a surcharge of $40 each.
Perfect arches are those where the radius of the circle is
constant at all points. The width is exactly twice the
height. For inside mount, measure the inside of the window
frame. For outside mount, add the desired amount
of overlap to your measurments.
Skandia only makes perfect arches, quarter circle arches
and circles. If you require a non-perfect arch, order a
perfect arch slightly larger that is required for your window.
A qualified installer can custom cut it on the job
site to fit your window.
All of our arches are now available with an optional
disc arch center as shown to the right.
shades require twice the number of cords for their operation. Because of
this, over time, top down bottom up shades tend to require minor adjustments
as the cords stretch. Please make your customer aware of this. They
have a maximum width of 72” with a maximum length of 96”. Minimum
width limitation is 12”. Alanna shades cannot be paneled for this application.
Sun Up - Sun Down Shade
Sun Up Sun Down shades operate the same way the Top Down Bottom Up does,
with an important exception. Instead of just one fabric, it uses two. One on the
top and one on the bottom. By using two fabrics, one sheer and one opaque, you
can create the Sun Up Sun Down effect. This is a favorite of decorators. Some
adjustments over time may be required due to the cords stretching. Please make
your customer aware of this. They have a maximum width of 72” with a maximum
length of 96”. Minimum width limitation is 12”. Alanna shades cannot be
paneled for this application. Price each shade separately and add together. There
is no surcharge.
Pleated, Cellular & Treanna
• Will the new shades match in color and texture to the ones
you installed for me last month?
When our suppliers paint, dye or extrude the materials
we use to fabricate our products, there are slight coloration
changes from each run. For example, when our wood finisher
paints slats in our color pure white, the final color is affected by
both temperature and humidity. If one run is produced when the
temperature is 78º and the humidity is 60% and the next run is
produced when the temperature is 82º and the humidity is 78%,
the differences in temperature and humidity will cause each run of
pure white slats to vary slightly in color.
• Why does my Treanna Shade roll-up crooked?
Treanna should be installed by a qualified installer.
Telescoping refers to the material rolling up unevenly on the roller
resulting in an overhang of fabric on one end. This can occur if
the shade material is not placed squarely on the roller system, but
with today’s metal rollers this rarely happens. Most of the time,
telescoping is the result of a non-level installation of the roller system.
This generally occurs on an inside mounted product in a window
casing that is not level to begin with. These products must be
installed perfectly level in order to function properly. This can be
achieved by using a level for an outside-mount installation and a
level and shims for an inside-mount installation.
• Why do my Treanna Shades not close exactly the same?
Treanna’s unique cell structure does interfere with the
product closure remaining constant from one shade to another.
Because Treanna is glued, it has some of the same bias issues as cellular
shades. However, because of the cell’s shape and how it closes,
shades of different heights do display different degrees of closure.
This is inherent to this product and is considered acceptable.
• My Treanna shades are slightly puckered. Is this normal?
Some puckering occurs on all Treanna shades. Most is
very minor in nature. It results mainly from inconsistencies in the
fabric material. We believe any reasonable customer will not find
this objectionable, if it is discussed prior to ordering.
• What is Mottle?
Mottle, also referred to as blotches, is a term used to
describe a material’s inconsistent appearance in color or texture.
Any light-filtering fabric held up to a light source will
have some mottling. Cellular and pleated shades, free-hang vertical
fabrics, and Treanna fabrics have a certain degree of mottling.
These fabrics look uniform or solid when laid on a surface
Retail and Consumer Product Expectations
At Skandia, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our product quality and customer service. In doing so, we have compiled
some very interesting statistics. Nearly one-third of our customers experience virtually no problems that require Skandia’s assistance.
This fact so intrigued us that we did a little investigating. What turned up was not totally unexpected. These satisfied customers had
one thing in common. The customers were informed during the sale process about the features and benefits of the product and about
the limitations. In other words, the salesperson did not oversell the product. Our goal is to help you achieve greater profits by informing
you, your sales personnel and, consequently, the consumer of the performance expectations for each of our products. This eliminates
97% of consumer complaints and helps you become the most knowledgeable window covering professional in the industry. Please
take the time to review our frequently asked question section and use the information to educate and inform your customers about
product expectations.
I27
Frequently Asked Questions
that allows no light to go through the fabric. Some sections of
the fabric will be darker (lets less light in) while others will be
lighter (more light comes through). The pattern is not regular,
so one shade’s light and
dark areas will not be the
same from one shade to the
next. This randomness is
characteristic and is part of
the beauty and warmth that
fabric provides. If you find
this objectionable, you may
want to select a totally
opaque window covering
such as a wood blind or
PVC vertical.
• What is considered an acceptable tolerance for color or texture
match?
The commercial tolerance for an acceptable color or texture
match is a 2-foot separation. If there is no discernible difference
between two colors or textures when placed 2 feet apart the
difference is considered acceptable. The many factors that influence
color and texture make it impossible to paint, dye or extrude
materials that match perfectly from run to run. There will always
be slight differences. However, our experience has shown that
these differences are not significant and can only be seen if the
materials are placed next to each other. Holding the materials 2
feet apart, you will not be able to see a discernible difference. This
is the standard to which we hold our vendors. It should not be an
issue as long as your customer orders all the window coverings for
a single room at the same time.
• Will my window covering discolor or fade?
Discoloration is usually defined as a color that changes
negatively and is generally used to describe a loss in a colors intensity
or the yellowing of the color. Discoloration or fading can be
caused by many factors including but not limited to the temperature
and humidity of the home, chemical cleaning agents, longterm
sun exposure, cigarette or cigar smoke, general cleanliness of
the home and the age of the product. Even though we use the
finest materials available, including the latest UV (ultraviolet)
resistant finishes, a reasonable amount of discoloration over time is
to be expected. The sun’s rays are very damaging to vinyl and fabric
materials. Over time, you can expect that the side of the product
that faces the sun to become slightly faded and a yellow cast or
tint may become apparent.

Frequently Asked Questions
• Why do my shades not hang straight in the window?
Like wood blinds, fabric can also have bow, camber and
twist. When referring to fabric it is sometimes called bias. All woven
fabrics have bias regardless of fiber content. “Bias” can be seen in 3
different forms. Bias can also cause a shade to raise unevenly.
Cellular shades can have all three forms of bias depending
on how well each cell is glued to
the previous cell in the machine
gluing process. This is especially
true with 2-on-1 headrail shades,
where one shade twists toward
the window, while the other
shade twists toward the room’s
interior.
Front to back (twist). A spiral
distortion along the length of a
piece of fabric. How the fabric is
slit, glued or woven at the mills is
the cause of all fabric bias twist.
Top to bottom (vertical) bow is a curvature in the longitudinal
direction causing the fabric to move away from a flat plane.
Print patterns and stitching and glue lines make up the majority of
vertical (bow) bias problems.
Side to side (horizontal) camber is a curvature of the horizontal
direction causing fabric to move away from a flat plane. Print
patterns and stitching and glue lines make up the majority of horizontal
(camber) bias problems.
We list the acceptable standards used in determining the
bias you may experience under each product’s specifications. It is
important to make your customer aware that these bias issues are an
inherent part of the fabric used in the fabrication of the product they
selected and are considered normal.
