Using the additional reading materials provided through<br />
e-readers, <strong>LEAP</strong> libraries also developed new outreach activities.<br />
Examples include:<br />

SAIDE Community Library held popular inter-school debate<br />
competitions utilizing materials from the e-readers,<br />
which involved six schools and was coordinated by volunteering<br />
teachers<br />
••<br />
Nyilima and JF Omange initiated book clubs, and Siaya started<br />
a weekend reading club headed by a reputed author who<br />
writes a column in the Saturday Nation newspaper<br />
••<br />
JF Omange had a radio program “Wanafunzi na maktaba”<br />
(“students and libraries:) on a Kenyan local radio station Radio<br />
Sahara that they were featured for 6 weeks every Saturday<br />
••<br />
Busia Library led library sessions in schools, and partnered with<br />
an NGO that conducts outreach activities with e-readers once<br />
a week. The library also pitched a tent as part of a four-day<br />
Agricultural Show to expose the community to e-readers.<br />
••<br />
Busia and Kisumu shared e-readers with six community<br />
libraries in Uganda<br />
••<br />
Kisumu and Kakamega Libraries used e-readers among<br />
special needs communities, such as children who are blind and<br />
hearing impaired<br />
••<br />
Kisumu Library conducted online e-reader training for the Dar<br />
es Salam American Corner program and Nakuru Library<br />
The most common formats for school-based outreach were to<br />
train and/or provide e-reader activities for one class per school<br />
visit, or to organize book clubs of 10-12 students. Other types of<br />
outreach activities included:<br />
