One of the Charter's strong points,<br />
which really contributes to the finished<br />
snubby, is the high visibility sights. These<br />
are fixed, as they should be on a gun ofthis<br />
type. The rear consists of a generous<br />
trough cut into the topstrap, and the relocated<br />
front ramp has been improved by<br />
the necessary filing ofits height. Broad and<br />
blocky, they are quickly picked up by the<br />
eye.<br />
Accuracy is superb with the 225-grain<br />
Speer bullet. Friends .who are more adept<br />
at double-action shooting than I, !lave<br />
printed extremely tight groups at seven<br />
yards. The accuracY'is still present at further<br />
distances, but that is getting beyond<br />
the practical applications of a gun of this<br />
type. The gun can still be cocked for single<br />
action Dring, but I do little of that, preferring<br />
to stay with the double-action<br />
method.<br />
Concerning controllability, in my practice<br />
I shoot some rounds one-handed, both<br />
left and right. Perfect control is present.<br />
Remember, this is with the small-wood<br />
stocks and a TylerT-grip adaptor. I do prefer<br />
two hands for' most shooting, which<br />
provides comfortable control resulting in a<br />
deadly cone of fire.<br />
Federal has introduced a new 200-grain<br />
lead bullet for the .44 Special, which<br />
breathes new life into the factory ammo<br />
scene for non-reloaders. I have never tried<br />
them because 'I am happy with my present<br />
handloads and have my sights set for that<br />
load.<br />
Charter Arms has recently brought out<br />
the .44 Bulldog in stainless. I haven't seen<br />
one, but a gun of this type can well benefit<br />
from the qualities inherent in stainless. If!<br />
were working up my big-bore snubby concept<br />
today, I would look long and hard at<br />
the stainless model.<br />
In summing up, there has been more<br />
satisfaction in this project than merely<br />
seeing ideas materialize. There is the<br />
pleasure that comes from realizing yo.u<br />
have in the revolver, a dependable companion,<br />
whether on the range or on the<br />
highways. Slipped into an overcoat pocket,<br />
it has been a welcome addition on evening<br />
walks. Both my wife and I were glad of its<br />
presence the night our car refused to start<br />
when preparing to leave a city parking lot<br />
for home. We were alone, except for a couple<br />
of suspicious-looking types sitting on a<br />
wall drinking beer. No problem arose, but<br />
when we think of how it all could have<br />
gone down so differently, we were grateful<br />
for the big bore snubby.<br />
More than 50 years ago, J. Henry<br />
FitzGerald wrote a classic book called<br />
Shooting. It deals entirely with handguns<br />
and their use. Some of it is outdated now,<br />
but the wisdom he shares is as timely now<br />
as it was then. I can think ofno better way<br />
to conclude this article than by sharing<br />
with you some of Fitz's thoughts:<br />
"I have found that it takes very little encouragement<br />
to interest everyone in the art<br />
ofshooting. Whether man, woman, or child,<br />
they are all interested ifthe subject is properly<br />
submitted to them and they enjoy it as<br />
much as the gun-addict. Protection ofself<br />
family, and property is a very good reason<br />
why every American citizen should learn to<br />
shoot. Thefear ofrevolvers andpistols arises<br />
from ignorance of their manipulation and<br />
use; fear ofaccidents with firearms arises<br />
from the same source. The man who knows<br />
how to use a revolver has no fear of it and<br />
feels a sense ofsecurity in his home that cannot<br />
be derived in any other way.<br />
