and age. Unless I am badly mistaken, one<br />

of the very last .38 S&Ws to be made in<br />

this country was the Iver Johnson Cadet,<br />

which was phased out of production in the<br />

mid-1970s. This, of course, excludes the<br />

Ruger Service-Sixes, since these were not<br />

available in the United States.<br />

Now, let's examine the .38 S&W<br />

cartridge itself. The case is .775 overall,<br />

with a rim diameter of.440. At the base it is<br />

.386 compared to .379 for the .38 special.<br />

Because of its larger base diameter, a .38<br />

S&W simply will not fit in an unaltered .38<br />

Special.<br />

Th ese figures are very close to the<br />

dimensions ofa 9mm Luger. The latter has<br />

an overall length of.754 and a base diameter<br />

of .392. So, the .38 S&W actually has a<br />

slightly larger case capacity than the 9mm!<br />

It is thus the strength of the cases, and of<br />

the guns in which they are fired, that place<br />

severe limitations on the power of the .38<br />

S&W.<br />

At some time (I can't determine exactly<br />

when), U.S..38 S&Ws seemed to have<br />

been changed from a bore diameter of<br />

.359" to .357", or at least my Terrier is so<br />

barreled. At any rate, all .38 S&Ws can be<br />

effectively reloaded with standard .357<br />

bullets.<br />

With that out of the way, let's talk about<br />

handloading the .38 S&W.<br />

In my estimation, the old hull does its<br />

best work with comparatively light bullets,<br />

in spite of the British experience with<br />

heavy slugs during WWII. The loads listed<br />

here should be used only in modern, wellmade<br />

revolvers. Specifically, I would limit<br />

their use to the following guns: Colt Police<br />

Positive, Colt Bankers Special, Colt Single­<br />

Action Army, Colt Detective Special,<br />

S&W Military & Police, S&W Victory,<br />

S&W Regulation Police, S&W Terrier,<br />

Ruger Service-Six (if you can find one),<br />

and Webley & Scott.<br />

Since I don't currently own a four-inch<br />

.38 S&W, I borrowed a Colt Police Positive,<br />

so chambered, from a collector-friend.<br />

This particular revolver is in excellent condition,<br />

and I really hated to return it after I<br />

had finished shooting it.<br />

Once again, these loads should not be<br />

used in old, break-top revolvers, or any revolver<br />

that is in less than good condition. If<br />

there is any doubt whatsoever, have your<br />
