New Prairieland Park Ag Centre
We are pleased to announce that
construction on the new Prairieland
Park Ag Centre is nearing completion.
The new facility will open October 31,
2008.
The indoor stabling area has 270, 10’
by 10’ box stalls adjoining the indoor
100’ by 140’ heated arena (extendable
to 200’) and seats 500 - 700
spectators. The Fall Fair Committee
is looking forward to hosting the first
show in the new facility November 12
to the 15.
This state-of-the-art Agriculture
Centre provides new and exciting
opportunities: equine events such
as reining, barrel racing, team
penning, team roping, hunter/jumper,
dressage, clinics, workshops, sales,
beef cattle shows & sales, dairy shows
& sales, stock dog demonstrations
& competitions, dog club activities,
industry trade shows – the sky is the
limit!!

News from the Agriculture Department
AG-EXperience a Success
Agriculture returned to the Saskatoon Ex in 2008 with
the debut of the AG-EXperience. Working in partnership
with leading industry stakeholders, Prairieland Park
developed the AG-EXperience, a 10,000 square
foot display celebrating Saskatchewan agriculture.
Interactive stations were designed to provide a fun,
educational, hands-on environment to learn about the
value and impact of agriculture and food production on
the daily lives of Saskatchewan people.
Phase One of the project featured the beef, dairy,
poultry, and pork industries and included live animals
on display to complement the interactive stations.
Fair-goers had the opportunity to learn about food
production, nutrition, animal care, the effect of
agriculture on the environment, and career options in
the agriculture industry.
Prairieland Park was very fortunate to also include in
the AG-EXperience Agrium’s interactive exhibit “Seed
Survivor”. Seed Survivor is an integral part of the
Calgary Stampede’s Ag-tivity in the City and Agrium
does not normally send this exhibit to other venues.
However, when Agrium learned about Prairieland Park’s
AG-EXperience exhibit, they were convinced that the
project was worthy of Seed Survivor.
The Farm Animal Council also participated in the AG-
EXperience with their interactive display and a new
Puppet Show. “Having the opportunity to be part of
Prairieland Park’s AG-Experience served the Farm Animal
Council of Saskatchewan (FACS) extremely well. Not
only did people visit our booth and test their knowledge
with our interactive video game, our puppet theatre
premiere ‘Tales from the FACS Farm’ was enjoyed by
many youngsters on Share the Fair Day,” FACS Executive
Director Adele Buettner said.
The AG-EXperience interactive displays will be utilized
throughout the year during Prairieland’s agriculture
shows as a component of the School Tours program.
Fall Fair 2008
Our staff is currently very busy with preparations for the
upcoming Saskatoon Fall Fair on November 12 to 15.
This will be the first show in our new Prairieland Park
Ag Centre. There will be 9 purebred shows, Commercial
Cattle Show & Sale, Prospect Show & Sale, trade show,
the ever-popular Cinderella Classic & the new Señor
Challenge classes. We are looking forward to a great
show in this wonderful new facility.
Please note that Fall Fair 2008 will run at the same time
as Saskatchewan indemand, we hope that everyone will
plan to attend both shows.
The 2nd Annual Saskatchewan indemand
This event will provide Saskatchewan entrepreneurs
with opportunities to showcase and promote their
“Saskatchewan Made” products and services directly to
customers and consumers.
The 2008 show will be held on November 14, 15, and
16, the same time as our annual beef industry event,
Saskatoon Fall Fair and we anticipate that the shows will
complement each other and provide additional traffic
for both events.
Programming the show is complete and we have a
diverse and interesting line-up of speakers and events
for both the Information Theatre and the Cooking Stage.
The 1st Annual Saskatchewan Culinary Challenge will
be held on Friday night with top chefs competing for
the title. An additional six cooking sessions will be held
on Saturday and Sunday, all featuring Saskatchewan
products.
Two renowned speakers at the Information Theatre
will focus on healthy living, nutrition, and wellness.
Once again, the Fibre indemand group will present a
fashion show, demonstrations and displays featuring
Saskatchewan made plant and animal fibres.
Saskatchewan indemand is produced by Saskatoon
Prairieland Park Corporation with guidance from a
volunteer committee consisting of representatives from:
Saskatchewan Food Processors; Agriculture Council of
Saskatchewan; Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture;
Tourism Saskatoon; Saskatchewan Food Industry
Development Centre Inc.; Saskatoon Chefs’ Association,
STEP, and Biolin Research Inc.

Another Successful Marquis Downs
Season Ends
Marquis Downs once again had another successful
thoroughbred race season. With some great weather and
with a barn area that was full to capacity with horses, it
provided race patrons with large fields and exciting racing
on which to bet. That being said, for the seventh straight
year Marquis Downs had increases in both attendance and
handle. As in the past, there were three weekends that
were focal points in 2008.
Heritage Weekend in mid-August featured six races for
Saskatchewan-bred horses that totalled $100,000 in purse
money. It was the richest weekend ever of thoroughbred
racing in Saskatchewan. In early September the $25,000
Prairie Lily Sales Stakes for two-year-olds was run in
conjunction with Prairie Lily Yearling Sale. J C’s Action
owned by the Jack Harasyn, trained by Russell Gardipy
and ridden by Tim Moccasin, scored a hard-fought victory
over ten rivals. J.C’s Action started three times at the
Downs, won all three, and had earnings of $33,000.
Both the race and the sale were successes, which should
make the 2009 race and sale even bigger and better. The
final day of racing featured the $25,000 Saskatchewan
Derby. The Derby attracted a field of eight which included
four horses from Alberta, three from Manitoba and one
from Saskatchewan. Alberta invader Half Mine, owned by
Norm Castiglione and trained by Monica Russell, moved
boldly around the final turn to take the lead a furlong out,
then drew clear to win by more than four lengths. The
handle of more than $59,000 was the largest since the
early 90’s and was easily the best of 2008. Tim Moccasin
once again led all jockeys with 40 trips to the winner’s
circle, while Russell Gardipy topped all trainers with 31
victories.
With the 2008 race season now over, track
management and horsemen are planning for and
looking forward to a successful 2009.
